That "you have not seen what I have seen" line when delivered to *Elrond* of all people really shows how little the Rings of Power writers know of the lore. Or how little they cared.
Elrond lost his grandparents, his uncles and his parents- and all of it was because of the actions of Galadriel's family. Specifically, her cousins the sons of Feanor. The sons of Feanor murdered Elrond's grandparents and his mother's brothers, then sacked his home. Yes, his parents didn't actually die, but they went to Valinor when he was only 7 and he never saw them again. Had Meadrhose and Maglor not chosen to spare him and his brother, he might have been killed too.
Oh and he lost a brother to mortality.

There are so many problems with this show. The biggest one is the assassination of the lore, starting with the reason why the Elves left Valinor. According to "The Silmarillion" the Elves who left Valinor did so, because they wanted to recover the Silmarils, they vowed to do so. Galadriel left because she wanted to have a kingdom of her own. Also, the returning to Valinor does not work the way the show is portraying it. The Elves who left Valinor became exiles in Middle Earth, due to some "minor" kinslaying that Fäenor and many of his fellow Elves engaged in against the Teleri elves in order to steal their ships for the crossing. During the crossing one of the gods (who is also the messenger of Ilúvatar) was like "well, many of you guys will suffer and die and the gods will not lift a finger to save you, cus kinslaying is frowned upon. Enjoy your stay in Middle Earth."
From what I understand the showrunners wanted to portray Galadriel as a brash, young, hot-headed version of the character, which does not work, because she is like 1500 years old at this point.
Elrond not being an Elf lord makes no sense, since he is descended from Elf kings, both on his mother's and his father's side. Heck, one of his ancestors is Mélian, who was this world's equivalent of an angel and who also taught Galadriel the art of magic. Elrond is very much a high ranking Elf.
Proto-Hobbits being depicted as migratory makes no sense as Hobbits are specifically non-migratory and in "The Lord of the Rings" it is mentioned that even moving to the other side of the river, to another Hobbit village, is considered extravagant. Also, if the proto-Hobbits are migratory and have been for generations, then surely they would have used ponies or sheep or large dogs to pull their carts, rather than pulling them themselves. Their method of travel is just not efficient, as it will be seen in the show later.
Sure, some of the deviations from the lore can be explained away with the "they don't have the rights for" The Silmarillion" argument. Which begs the question: why make the show at all, if they don't have access to the materials they need in order to make the show???
The other problem is that this show is surprisingly boring. I was watching it with someone who knows even less about the lore than I do, so they were not bothered by the confusing timelines and lore-butchering. They have abandoned the show before the end of episode 1, because it was boring. I watched 3 more episodes and boy, it felt like a chore.
"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy captured my heart and piqued my interest after 5 minutes. The show failed to do that after 4 hours.

@@JR-sx3gl What I fail to understand is why many people seem to like it. I found a youtube video that was a song from the show and a lot of people were saying that this is the best show ever and Galadriel is an amazing character. This show turned Galadriel into a whiney, annoying moron, Sauron is a fistfighting petulant teenager who wants to destroy Middle Earth because pretty elf lady turned him down. The fact the characters somehow survive a volcano erupting in their faces is just laughable. But some people like this show and I can't see why. Is this a "guilty pleasure" sort of thing?

Roughly every other line in the dialog is dumb. Nori says they can't leave the stranger in the meteor crater because wolves will get him. As if wolves traditionally love to jump into new meteor craters, ignoring the glowing rocks and two dozen small fires burning, in order to find a likely food source.

Harfoots.....ugrrrhhhhhhhh this was my roar of frustration when I first saw that damned show :) of course they inserted Hobbits forcefully...without actual consideration...not to mention their entire plot line is pointless and disjointed from the rest of the plot of the show!!!! These Hobbits obvioulsy make no sense...and the show contradicts the lore regarding the early Hobbit clans....yeah there were initially three Fallohides, Stoors and Harfoots...the more numerous clan of hills dwellers, who WERE HOLE DIGGERS...yes Harfoots were the original hobbits who build the hobbit holes so in lore...THEY WERE SETTLERS:
"They were the most inclined to settle in one place, and longest preserved their ancestral habit of living in tunnels and holes."
BOOM! That's the Harfoots characterization in texts...so no them being nomads make absolutely no sense...the whole thing wiht Harfoots habit is that it actually is the ORIGIN of the word HOBBIT:
" _Hobbit_ was the name usually applied by the Shire-folk to all their kind. Men called them _Halflings_ and the Elves _Periannath._ The origin of the word _hobbit_ was by most forgotten. It seems, however, to have been at first a name given to the Harfoots by the Fallohides and Stoors, and to be a worn-down form of a word preserved more fully in Rohan: _holbytla_ 'hole-builder'." Lotr appendices
Boom another example of direct contradiction of lore and internal logic of the world...if Harfoots were not digging holes and tunnels, not burrowing to make those homes for themselves....their race would never receive the name Hobbit :) so are to assume that this show will depict invention of the hobbit style of life hahahahahah! Urghhhh...hell for the nomadic people the best choice would be to have follow the Fallohides, but the problem is the Fallohides are the hunters living in forests and bolder, more adventurous, taller an slimmer of the hobbit kind, but THEY were pale, northern branch so white and they would not be able to use the excuse of the lore description of the Harfoots being "browner of skin" as justification for dumb race swaps!! :) haaha. Harfoots the name itself means the 'hairy feet', Fallohides means 'fallow so light skin' the Stoors, is supposed to indicate the sturdiness, Stoors having larger feet and hands, being somewhat tougher, ....Smeagol was belonging to the Stoors clan or offshoot of it....and speaking of Smeagol the name...in the oldertimes the Hobbits HAD NO SURNAMES, they simply used single name and their names came from languages they used back then. Also Stoors were more associating with Men so less shy of Big Folk, Harfoots were often living in the foothills of the mountains and so associated more often with Dwarves, while Fallohides being naturally more adventurous were associated with Elves more, and again as they loved forests and hunting as their main way of sustenance....(other clans would probably be starting to farm already)...again this makes little sense to have Hobbits so early in Second Age, when they were migrating to the area in the THIRD AGE so at best they logically should be somewhere off to the east at this point or just entering the eastern Rhovanion. Also possibly they may have started out as a single people who later diverged into three in the depths of time...but this is the thing with this show...it doesn't consider the historical perspective of the events in Middle-earth and Tolkien lore and worldbuilidng! There are Hobbits in this show...just because it's recognizeable mark, they were in the stories before and so this show script writers said to themselves there's no Middle-earth without having hobbits so they inserted it without any consideration...but Tolkien never mentions them in the Second Age stories!!! They simply are too far away and not noticed at this point! They arrived in that region fo the world in Third Age and then interacted with the locals, migrating west like other peoples before them (like the real world influence of proto-indoeuropeans :)). Everything about the book is a nonsense...not to mention that Hobbits of that age were ILLITERATE:
In Lotr prologue it is said that Hobbits learned to write and read from the Dunedain in the kingdom of Arnor in THIRD AGE.
"Before the crossing of the mountains the Hobbits had already become divided into three somewhat different breeds: Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallohides. The Harfoots were browner of skin, smaller, and shorter, and they were beardless and bootless; their hands and feet were neat and nimble; and they preferred highlands and hillsides. The Stoors were broader, heavier in build; their feet and hands were larger, and they preferred flat lands and riversides. The Fallohides were fairer of skin and also of hair, and they were taller and slimmer than the others; they were lovers of trees and of woodlands."
    ...
"All Hobbits had originally lived in holes in the ground, or so they believed, and in such dwellings they still felt most at home; but in the course of time they had been obliged to adopt other forms of abode.
It was in these early days, doubtless, that the Hobbits learned their letters and began to write after the manner of the Dúnedain, who had in their turn long before learned the art from the Elves. And in those days also they forgot whatever languages they had used before, and spoke ever after the Common Speech, the Westron as it was named... Yet they kept a few words of their own, as well as their own names of months and days, and a great store of personal names out of the past."
Indeed it makes no sense that a nomadic people would be so close minded, no the nomadic peoples would be in general more adventurous, so it logically makes no sense, these are not the country bumpkins the rural settlers living in the same place all their lives...the show implies they migrated periodically and searched for new areas....so it's the opposite of parochial confined in one place Hobbits of the Shire...indeed the Harfoots are these settlers who tend to be more timid in lore, but because they tend to not move around much....because they dig a hole to live in :), it would make more sense for nomads to be open minded and more adventurous as a whole! :)
Good thing you mentioned Gandalf's investigaion :) take note of it and compare it to the dumber investigations without any sense of logic in this damned show :). The thing about elf healers....ABSOLUTE nonsense, which is funny considering that Elrond is "master of healing" :) in Lotr hahahah elves have healing arts, medicine etc. other texts of Tolkien mention that they have great knowledge in this:
"For instance, the arts of healing, and all that touches on care of the body, are among all the Eldar most practiced by the nissi; whereas it was the elven-men who bore arms at need. And the Eldar deemed that the dealing of death even when lawful or under necessity, diminished the power of healing, and that the virtue of the nissi in this matter was due rather to their abstaining from hunting or war than to any special power that went with their womanhood. Indeed in dire straits or desperate defense, the nissi fought valiantly, and there was less difference in strength and speed between elven-men and elven-women that had not borne child than is seen among mortals. On the other hand many elven-men were great healers and skilled in the lore of living bodies, though such men abstained from hunting, and went not to war until the last need." Morgoth's Ring, Laws and Customs of the Eldar
The entire story with these 'southlands' is an invention of the show,...so total fanfiction without basis in any Tolkien worldbuilding or lore...technically there should not be any elves in that part of the world.

By the way if you're interested in the terms of Tolkien lore, about various topics, Elves while immortal in natural way, knew in some measure death, due to accidents or violence their bodies can be destroyed and killed, even though they were still tougher and capable of surviving wounds that would be fatal to normal man:
Of Death and the Severance of Fëa and Hröa, Morgoth's Ring:
"What then happened to the houseless fëa? The answer to this question the Elves did not know by nature. In their beginning (so they report) they believed, or guessed, that they 'entered into Nothing', and ended like other living things that they knew, even as a tree that was felled and burned. Others guessed more darkly that they passed into 'the Realm of Night' and into the power of the 'Lord of Night'. These opinions were plainly derived from the Shadow under which they awoke; and it was to deliver them from this shadow upon their minds, more even than from the dangers of Arda Marred, that the Valar desired to bring them to the light of Aman.
It was in Aman that they learned of Manwë that each fëa was imperishable within the life of Arda, and that its fate was to inhabit Arda to its end. Those fëar, therefore, that in the marring of Arda suffered unnaturally a divorce from their hröar remained still in Arda and in Time. But in this state they were open to the direct instruction and command of the Valar. As soon as they were disbodied they were summoned to leave the places of their life and death and go to the 'Halls of Waiting': Mandos, in the realm of the Valar."
    ...
The Valar were troubled, not only because of the case of Finwë and Míriel but because of the Avari, and of the Sindar; for Middle-earth was perilous to bodies, and many had died, even before the Eldar came to Aman
~The Nature of Middle-earth, Part 1, Chapter 15, Elvish Reincarnation
Obviously the Valinor inhabitants would not know the danger and so death in Aman would be itself unnatural, and there were only two cases (Miriel dying due to her own will and loss of strength, and Finwe murdered by Morgoth) before the Elves migrated back to Middle-earth to Beleriand in mortal lands where they did die in droves due to violence in the war against Morgoth...this by the way, makes the whole motivation behind Galadriel's revenge makes her seem even worse...for she wasn't the only one who would have family members getting killed, and even then the Elves in the end their spirits return reincarnated into their old forms:
"Elves were destined to be 'immortal', that is not to die within the unknown limits decreed by the One, which at the most could be until the end of the life of the Earth as a habitable realm. Their death - by any injury to their bodies so severe that it could not be healed - and the disembodiment of their spirits was an 'unnatural' and grievous matter. It was therefore the duty of the Valar, by command of the One, to restore them to incarnate life, if they desired it. But this 'restoration' could be delayed† by Manwë, if the fëa while alive had done evil deeds and refused to repent of them, or still harboured any malice against any other person among the living.
†Or in gravest cases (such as that of Fëanor) withheld and referred to the One."
    ...
Re-birth is not the only fate of the houseless fëar. The Shadow upon Arda caused not only misfortune and injury to the body. It could corrupt the mind; and those among the Eldar who were darkened in spirit did unnatural deeds, and were capable of hatred and malice. Not all who died suffered innocently. Moreover, some fëar in grief or weariness gave up hope, and turning away from life relinquished their bodies, even though these might have been healed or were indeed unhurt. Few of these latter desired to be re-born, not at least until they had been long in 'waiting'; some never returned. Of the others, the wrong-doers, many were held long in 'waiting', and some were not permitted to take up their lives again.
For there was, for all the fëar of the Dead, a time of Waiting, in which, howsoever they had died, they were corrected, instructed, strengthened, or comforted, according to their needs or deserts. If they would consent to this. But the fëa in its nakedness is obdurate, and remains long in the bondage of its memory and old purposes (especially if these were evil)."
So in any case 'death' for the Elves would be something vastly different for them!!! There is this amazing text of Tolkien conversation of Finrod and woman of the Edain, quite a philosophical discourse:
"'What do ye know of death? Ye do not fear it, because ye do not know it,' said Andreth.
'We have seen it, and we fear it,' answered Finrod. 'We too may die, Andreth; and we have died. My father's father was cruelly slain, and many have followed him, exiles in the night, in the cruel ice, in the insatiable sea. And in Middle-earth we have died, by fire and by smoke, by venom and the cruel blades of battle. Fëanor is dead, and Fingolfin was trodden under the feet of the Morgoth.†
'For what end? To overthrow the Shadow, or if that may not be, to keep it from spreading once more over all Middle-earth-to defend the Children of Eru, Andreth, all the Children and not the proud Eldar only!'
'I had heard,' said Andreth, 'that it was to regain your treasure that your Enemy had stolen; but maybe the House of Finarfin is not at one with the Sons of Fëanor. Nonetheless for all your valor, I say again: "what know ye of death?" To you it may be in pain, it may be bitter and a loss- but only for a time, a little taken from abundance, unless I have been told untruth. For ye know that in dying you do not leave the world, and that you may return to life.
    ...
"When we speak so, we speak out of knowledge, not out of mere Elvish lore; and we proclaim that ye are our kin, in a kinship far closer (both of hröa and fëa) than that which binds together all other creatures of Arda, and ourselves to them.
'Other creatures also in Middle-earth we love in their measure and kind: the beasts and birds who are our friends, the trees, and even the fair flowers that pass more swiftly than Men. Their passing we regret; but believe it to be a part of their nature, as much as are their shapes or their hues.
'But for you, who are our nearer kin, our regret is far greater. Yet, if we consider the briefness of life in all Middle-earth, must we not believe that your brevity is also part of your nature? Do not your own people believe this too? And yet from your words and their bitterness I guess that you think that we err.'
The Silmarillion makes a whole thing about the Elves living fairly innocently before Morgoth did his work there and then he murdered Finwe, Feanor's father and the Elves were already kind of roused and incited into violence:
"Tears unnumbered ye shall shed; and the Valar will fence Valinor against you, and shut you out, so that not even the echo of your lamentation shall pass over the mountains. On the House of Fëanor the wrath of the Valar lieth from the West unto the uttermost East, and upon all that will follow them it shall be laid also. Their Oath shall drive them, and yet betray them, and ever snatch away the very treasures that they have sworn to pursue. To evil end shall all things turn that they begin well; and by treason of kin unto kin, and the fear of treason, shall this come to pass. The Dispossessed shall they be for ever. Ye have spilled the blood of your kindred unrighteously and have stained the land of Aman. For blood ye shall render blood, and beyond Aman ye shall dwell in Death's shadow. For though Eru appointed to you to die not in Eä, and no sickness may assail you, yet slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief; and your houseless spirits shall come then to Mandos. There long shall ye abide and yearn for your bodies, and find little pity though all whom ye have slain should entreat for you. And those that endure in Middle-earth and come not to Mandos shall grow weary of the world as with a great burden, and shall wane, and become as shadows of regret before the younger race that cometh after. The Valar have spoken." The Silmarillion
That scene with the helmets is a bit ridiculous, there's no way possible it would be done so...but this is in a way a corrupted reflection of the something from The Silmarillion...to which Amazon had no rights and which was in itself much more realistic:
"'By the command of Morgoth the Orcs with great labour gathered all the bodies of those who had fallen in the great battle, and all their harness and weapons, and piled them in a great mound in the midst of Anfauglith; and it was like a hill that could be seen from afar. Haudh-en-Ndengin the Elves named it, the Hill of Slain, and Haudh-en-Nirnaeth, the Hill of Tears. But grass came there and grew again long and green upon that hill, alone in all the desert that Morgoth made; and no creature of Morgoth trod thereafter upon the earth beneath which the swords of the Eldar and the Edain crumbled into rust.'"

As you probably saw my other messages below, I talked aboutthe lore on early Hobbit societies, and other such things like using more lore on the Forodwaith and so on. EdiT: it seems not all of my comments went through :), I wrote in one other that they wasted opportunity to depict the Forodwaith in greater capacity, depict Lossoth the Snow-men of Forochel, the whole episode could have been about this expedition to the north, have other dangers like White Wolves, and so on, the Lossoth would be also chance at that 'diversity' as they could depict them as the Inuit/Eskimo type people so 'asian phenotypes' but nope they prefer to use the 'forced diversity' meaning race swapping white folks and so on and on, there was so much.

If that comes up in future episodes, I might just have to cite this comment.

Elves did not look down on humans, they regarded them as courageous, fast-living younger cousins. And humans regarded Elves with respect, admiration and a bit of mystical presence.

Clearly, Amazon made and threw dollars to this show assuming that it will be the next big thing just like Game of Thrones. They got lots of attention and million viewers in their pilot episode. The problem is...they didn't plan how to make their viewers invested and make them watch the show til the end.
They chose a generic and badly done revenge plot to be the foundation of this show...in short, the writing just sucks. It's not just a very bad adaptation but also a very shallow "heartless" show. It doesn't have an identity. Its only identity to me is that its the "one show that tries too hard to look epic but comes across as cringey and uninteresting."
Such a shame because the heart of the Akallabeth or the Numenorian story centers around MORTALITY. And how many movies and shows that succeeded in tackling this theme. Many. There's Puss n Boots: The Last Wish and others. It's a universal fascination and source of fear and will forever remain relevant.

      @TheGourdKing  6 місяців тому +3

First, thank you for the comment as I always appreciate engagement with my work.
I believe I said they were similar to angels rather than they were supposed to be precisely like them. Nor did I suggest or intend to suggest this was Tolkien's intention. I'm not drawing a 1-to-1 comparison but rather making a helpful comparison to illustrate that they share similarities with angels (Biblically and artistically) that they do not share with common man, such as immortality, higher wisdom, and aspects of their appearance (though this would be more on the artistic front, hence why I showed a painting of an angel and Galadriel in Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring).
I do not know which criticisms you see as nitpicks though it is worth noting that some things I point out are in service to jokes and in isolation I might not otherwise make a fuss over them.

    • @Lothiril

I can't remember whatvI perceived as nitpicks, but in any case it were just a few, so nothing drastic. 🧐
In regards to Elves being similar to angels - I disagree with that idea because while they may be beautiful and long-lived to the point of being basically immortal, they are nonetheless very earth-bound and at times also very flawed people.
In Tolkien's mythos there are the Valar or Maiar who rather take the role of angels, being in essence far more beautiful than any elf, and in their origin truly immortal and from beyond the world.

Beren and Luthien diedm but they were resurrected by the Valar, after which Luthien (the Elf) lived on as a mortal with her husband for 40 years before leaving the world (they may have sailed to Valinor) and whilst we don't know what happened to Tuor its strongly implied that he, too, sailed to Valinor where he "was counted among the Eldar".

According to the shows lore, Sauron is prefering to hide as a mortal for the moment. He has not created anhy rings yet. He has seen the forge but not started making the rings for the middle earth races at the time in the show. He hasnt even seen mt. doom. I was fairly surpised he found it so easily. As far as I could tell, mt. doom wasnt named that yet. Sauron is then starting at the end of episode 8. So suaron could not have yet made the rings yet, but he could have if he stayed in "Numeninorrrrrrr" Shows pronuctions.

I recommend anyone to watch Brandon Sanderson podcast episodes on this mess of a show, I think there's at least two episodes where he talks about it, overall he was waaaay kinder on this show than I was but he did acknowledge most of the shows mistakes, my favorite part is the tirade he goes on when talking about the harfoots but you need context from episode 4 of the show to watch that cause it's a little spoiler.
Haven't watched this whole video yet but will certainly do it, I'll have to stop and start throughout my day but that's fine, I might even watch it in one sitting later again.

the problem with coupling between men and elves is that it requires the intermission from god himself. Elves must give up their immortality and become humans. As human souls do not stay in the world instead they travel to a place unknowns to elves. So at the same time they will be saying good bye to all of their relatives and family members. For all eternity.

It would've been nice if the show had adhered to this. They treat the pairing as though it is dangerous rather than sacrificial, which are obviously two very different things.

so you’ve watched creators spoilering the show and decided to watch it yourself to make your own conclusions? lol

    • @TheGourdKing
      @TheGourdKing  7 місяців тому

Spoilering? I cannot say I've encountered this word before.
Putting aside that little bit of grammatical goofery, I don't think you paid very much attention and/or likely haven't thought through your position.
You seem to be suggesting that one cannot have a conclusion of their own once they've learned certain spoilers? That's rather ridiculous. If that were true, then we would never rewatch anything, nor could a rewatch change our minds for better or worse. Furthermore, my primary concern in reviewing this show is to discover how the show arrives at these moments via the storytelling, acting, pacing, plotting, etc. A review is a quality assessment, after all.
Finally, are you telling me you have never once watched a show or film after learning a spoiler? That your policy is to abandon the idea of watching the moment you learn something about it beforehand since now you cannot judge it for yourself? Because if that's the case, I have good news for you: even if you know a spoiler before watching something, you can draw your own conclusions.
