  • Today we're working on trying to reduce an engine noise on this 2006 Chevy Trailblazer 4.2 Liter engine. Starting off with an oil additive that claims to reduce noise and engine wear. Tools used in this video are linked below for you to purchase and support the channel.

I have the same “knocking” noise on my 2004 Trailblazer 4.2L. My oil pressure is great. Mechanic said it’s not a rod knock. I’ve put thousands of miles on it sounding like that. Currently at 192k and counting…

Those Motive X funnels will come in handy when I'm in my 70's or 80's and can't hold my hands steady anymore.
If and when you swap that engine, enjoy the work. Just as well service the 4wd disconnect and maybe new seals on the front diff while they are out with the engine.

They’re good funnels, specially when servicing vehicles with an anti-baffle built into the valve cover.

Disconnect each coil one at a time and if it's a rod or piston noise it'll quiet down and you can identify which cylinder it is. If it's a piston skirt the noise will be worse the colder the engine usually be reduced or go away as it warms up & the skirt expands. If you increase the viscosity of the oil and it reduces the noise more than likely a rod bearing and if unaffected wrist pin knock.

I am suprised that no one knows how to check for rod knock that I learned as a kid. Slowly open the throttle, we call it rock the throttle. If its a rod it will knock as the engine accelerates. Its a sure give away. There is another way and have heard it on two different cars. Let it sit a day or two and start it, a slightly lose rod will knock till oil pressure builds up. The rock the throttle method can often detect a lose rod that other wise cannot be heard. Give a try, its free.

yep I accidentally did a B12 acetone engine flush - actually CRC right into the camshaft via the PCV nipple. So I drove it to try burn off the acetone - and the engine was super loud - scary. So then I got LUCAS poured in there - and drove it - sounded better - got the oil changed then to get the acetone out. Then added MORE Lucas in. ... Sounds like it used to now. Not as scary. My silicone seals are leaking so I'm getting that silicone polymer additive that repairs the seals - Titan.

I would check torque convertor bolts back out against the engine, alone with internal engine diag. I have had torque converter bolts stay noisey, or quite under RPM raise.

Rod knock or wrist pin seems most likely. What's interesting is that the early Vortec I6es also had issues with the cylinder bore liners cracking; I think that issue was resolved after the first couple years ('02-03) but it points to a weakness in the bottom end of those 4.2s in general perhaps...

For the knocking, I would check each individual piston. Disconnect each piston one by one and start the car until you can rule out which piston it is. Then when you figure out which piston it is, I would first check the spark plug. Replace it even. If it continues, check the power to the spark plug. If it's not the cable and coupling, I would then check the compression and compare it to the other pistons.

If you watch ChrisFix, he has a trick to make oil pour smooth. If you pour it the way you did it (like most people do), it tends to splatter. If you hold it with either the front or back faced down, it pours smooth no matter what.
But! That funnel is DOPE tho! You don't have to worry about the splatter at all! Ima grab one.

I have a 4200 trailblazer 219k 05. It has some kind of impossible to pinpoint tap like knock. Mine does it with without gas idle you name it. I have good oil pressure; no codes. Oil looks good. Going to try Lucas. I have a feeling it's timing related like the cam phaser or a valve/lifter. You I could probably tell you it's an intermittent collapsing lifter or the phaser. That is a damn clean blazer fyi.

My first thought was rod knock. Either way it needs to be torn down with no oil pressure.
I wonder if you can "fix" it with a set of bearings and dropping the oil pan.

Your low oil pressure experience says it needs an overhaul. Often worn cam bearings lower oil pressure and then rod knock follows.

  • @Jihadbearzwithgunz
    @Jihadbearzwithgunz 4 роки тому +1

Replace the motor fam if the rod failed or even the wrist pin it would have caused more damage to the cylinder valves and piston.. Thought about it. Check coolant for oil and check compression.. Could be a spun bearing your hearing causing the rod knock which would explain why it quites down when you bring up the rpm if that is the case definitely just scrap the 4.2 inline pretty good for like 200k. Another thing to check that i just ran across was the 4200 has variable valve timing and the solenoids are pron to fail it should be on the driver side front of the motor pull the connector if its dry it might be okay but if you find oil try replacing the vvt solenoid apparently that can cause engine knock as well.

that noise sounds more like a dampener dont sound like a rod knock cuz it does not gets faster as you give it gas. some harmonic balancers have a bushing like rubber that fails. should be outer metal then rubber center then another inner metal over time the center rubber wears and it hits metal on metal and also can cause belt aligment issues

  • @westtexas501

Remove spark plugs and coils put a long 1/4 extension turn engine by hand and when you see extension to start to go down push on extension to see if you can push piston down to see if you have a spun rod bearing . . . Repeat for each cyl to pin point witch cyl is the problem child !!

A main bearing sounds similar, but there's a lot of moving parts in the 4.2 l motor and they are a bitch to take apart. You have to remove axles and 4 wheel drive actuators to get oil pan off, pack a lunch when you do this motor and a dinner, and another lunch and another dinner cause this was fun,but got a lot of quality time b.sn with the guys in the garage.my boys trailblazer that I worked on had water in motor, and had similar noise, someone switched a bolt in water pump fan and it was thumping on side of water pump, goobers need to be careful on their bolt sizes and not put too long of one .back into turning parts it almost took out plug in side of water pump and the roller rockers were a blast. I know that they always fly out on a the ford triton because the vvt clogs which the 4.2 has and has a variable cam adjuster on exhaust side.massive loads of fun there.maybe it will throw some onsite in on this motor IceQ

Sounds like a bottom end issue, main bearings or conrod Bearings. Probably mains. You could strip the bottom end and hope the crank isn't scored and try to just replace the bearings. If not i'd replace the engine depending on what ever is cheaper. This is usually the result of poor maintenance if anyone is wondering, or just age. Regular oil (Synthetic) and filter changes for long engine life.

Put each cylinder a tad bit after TDC and use a long screwdriver to push it down. If it indeed moves a bit. Then the rod bearings are junk. I use this method on many vehicles that I suspect lower end

Put an engine in it and tear this one down so we can see what it is and yes sounds like a piston knock

To me, doesn't matter what it is specifically. It's 100% bottom end noise. Rodknock is my opinion, but again, all I need to do is differentiate lower end noise, from top end noise. The engine needs to come apart, specifically the bottom end, it will show its signs then.

    +1 on rod knock.
If you drop an engine in it, can you break the old one down? See where it nuked itself?
