      Amen! Most of my Toyotas have one and it's very much appreciated. Just bought a RAV4, new from factory, and I think it does not have a drain plug, not entirely sure. I know I can't find the dipstick to check the trans fluid on it.

      Heck you're lucky these days if they give you a dipstick or even the tube. I'd trade having to vacuum suck fluid for being able to check the level

      Very disturbing, as a car ages, tiny leaks occur and we've all seen how wet it can get under there and not having a dipstick to check all the fluids complicates the diagnosis. Refill after a drain can also be problematic. I'm definitely stuck now in wanting to never own anything produced in or after 2020. I do all of my service myself and they've been trying to prevent that for several years.

You had to buy very expensive German Made autobox fluid as it was fill for life ?? but I serviced the autobox OK after some online help from a guy in AFRICA of all places who knew his stuff - anyway, have a great weekend.. Just a suggestion... Any time I have to drop a trans pan without a drain plug, I use a sucker to suck most of the fluid out through the dipstick tube. I had an FAA certified ap mechanic explain to me the proper torque sequence. He started by describing the sequence as working from the middle working outwards. This means the very last bolts are the furthest from an imaginary center point. He said it was kinda like the criss-cross pattern of torquing a car's wheel.
    I did a little internet journey to see various suggested patterns and they all started the same. Consider the pan a rectangle with two parallel sides longer than the other two parallel sides. Start with the CENTER of a long side and torque to spec (#1). Jump to the opposite side, i.e. the other long side, and torque that center bolt (#2). Then jump back to the first side but adjacent to the first tight bolt and torque it (#3). Jump back over to 2nd side and adjacent to (#2) and torque (#4).
    So far we've put in two bolts centered north/south (1 & 2) and two bolts to the south by one of first two (now 3 & 4). Next cross back over and do the two spots NORTH of first two (5 & 6).
    The generic pattern is center of north/south on east side then center north/south on west side. Then back to east side adjacent to center but one step south and then back west side adjacent one step south of center. NEXT back to east side and one step north of (1). etc.....
    Simply: start in the middle, then work outward from middle by criss crossing along the way. The very furthest from center are the VERY LAST to be torqued. I make analogy to smoothing a sheet on a bed where one starts from center and pushes air pockets outward. Any other G.I.s who recall making a military bed? Sheesh!!
    I wonder if the old cork gasket developed leaks because it was torqued incorrectly resulting in a bound up pan? If end bolts get tightened before center bolts there will likely be binding. Binding = gaps between pan and housing = leak!!
    DESIGN ENGINEERS DEVELOP torque sequences for a reason. Use it!!

      Tom, this is how to torque stiff blocks on flat, stiff gaskets. The situation looks a bit different, when you have a flexing pan open a gasket that can ‘flow’ and stretched when rolled. Then you need to pinch the gasket at regular intervals first, usually the ‘halving distance’ works well without deformation of the gasket: say, you have 16 bolts around perimeter. You go 1, 9, 5, 13, 3, 7, 11, 14, then the rest 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16. This prevents squishy gasket from buckling up somewhere

    • @tomtke7351

      @@MarekLewandowski_EE Why, then, are there suggested torque patterns?

    • @MarekLewandowski_EE
      @MarekLewandowski_EE 2 роки тому

      @@tomtke7351 why, when they are there you follow them. Someone calculated them. But if they are not provided you have to figure what works best. In-to-out like you described works best for stiff stuff, like cylinder head on motor block, which are stiff and their gasket is flat and cannot walk. Half-half sequence works best for flexible parts (like a sheet metal cover) and soft, thicker gaskets that can walk.
      One of those is The best guess if the manufacturer didn't provide a sequence or if you use non-standard gasket in a non critical part - important to know there’s not only one perfect sequence that applies to all situations.

    • @tomtke7351
      @tomtke7351 2 роки тому

While it doesn't get everything, it sure does help remove the bulk of fluids in most cases. Works with any reservoirs or transmission pans, even gas tanks. By the time you have the transmission bolts loose, it will have sucked out most of the fluid from the pan. I've seen both electric and air operated pumps.

    have owned 2 trailblazers and did a lot of work on both, were pretty easy to maintain, but the weak link on both is the trans, even when i went to trade in the one with a 158k on the clock dealership didn't want it as a trade and since i didn't want to sell it i took their lowball offer. They even had the nickname of transblazer because they go through trans. But haven't found a replacement that would match the ride or towing of the trailblazer.

      @@Smackdown91 no problem. It's an old trick, but super effective. It also prevents the problem of all the bolts needing to get aligned at the same time because they are all going off in all directions except into the bolt holes :)
      Just use 4 or 5 bolts to start it off and zip tie the rest of the holes. Once the bolts are hand tight, clip the zip ties and it's easy street from there.

    From my laymans position, that " leak" around the gasket didn't seem bad enough to warrant the work to change it. Especially on a vehicle with that many miles. Looked more like seepage than an actual leak

      The torque would be quite light, you get a feel by hand after doing it for years. The main thing is to originally tighten it at opposite ends before doing the final hand tightening.

      The torque on those pan bolts is probably around 6-8 lb. ft. Just a wrist twist tight. Slightly more than 'snugged'. Tighten any more, and you warp the pan and crush the gasket.

    • @Nick-ue7iw
      @Nick-ue7iw 2 роки тому +4

      Ford's pans call for 10-12lbs of torque for old 4EOD models, human torque with a 1ft wrench is 15lbs. Chevy (and all makes) are similar.

  • @atikovi1

    If you want to prevent leaks from the pan, use RTV. Gaskets have two leak paths from either side. RTV effectively bonds the pan to the transmission eliminating leakage points. Most car makers have gone to RTV for most fluid sealing applications in the last 10 years.

    • @Nick-ue7iw
      @Nick-ue7iw 2 роки тому

      On these older models they often call for a new filter every 30-50k miles. You have to take the pan off for that, RTV would be an additional annoyance if you want to do proper maintenance.

    Soooooo we take a screwdriver and drive it up between the seal and a polished aluminum sealing surfacemaking sure to leave a scratch in the best scenario or a gouge in the worst? I know that one small scratch wont do much but, several will starve the pump causing drivability issues. Use a pilot bearing puller for removing that seal just enough to grab it with some needle nose then pull out. Reduce chance of causing problems l8r.

    Only thing that keeps cork from a leak is Indian head gasket shellac. But overtightening will make that leak as well hahaha.

    Never did check the level prior to pan removal. (you did waste the time to put the car down and up again to look at the color of the fluid) you did not attempt to check pan bolts for tension. That gasket was not leaking enough to even wet the bottom of the pan! Upon refill, no mention of hot and cold level differences, "At the bottom of the hot mark" is not correct, the fluid is cold at this point, the instructions are on the dipstick! (the first time it gets on the highway and fully warmed, it will likely expel fluid from the vent, and will come back, "leaking" worse than before you worked on it!) You did not even appear to put the car back up for post repair leak check. Did not confirm customers complaint, sold a completely un necessary operation, full fail.

    Cork transmission pan gaskets are fine, unless the application was designed for a rubber one. If pan rails are dimpled instead of flat, use a rubber gasket. Also, if having transmission work done by someone who'll overtorque the bolts, don't use a cork gasket - because it'll leak every time (but that's not the gasket's fault!). No bent/warped pan, either. We used them for years without a single "come back." We also used rubber ones. Whatever the application called for. Seriously, no angry customers due to gasket choice - and we had some that expected a wash and wax if you left a fingerprint on their door handle :rolleyes: .
