wow this 11 minute video really saving lives.. I spent 10 hours the other day trying to figure out how to do this lol thank you!!!!
You are by far the best teacher for soft soft . It's very complicated at first - overwhelming, actually - but, you make it doable for
You are always inspiring. Thank you Martin!
I loved the video! I would like to learn how to create the other graphics you showed at the beginning :)
Nice tutorial, thank you =D
1:13 > note: you don't need to use any other app to bring in your data and make them into graphs, illustrator has its own set of graph tools
1:34 > "J": column graph tool> right click to open the list, hit the arrow icon to make it a palette (movable menu)
1:45 > "shift+O": artboard> canvas: click, hold and drag to create a new artboard
(Column graph)
> "J": column graph tool (or find in the palette)> canvas: click, hold and drag to draw it> note: > now we get something similar to an excel sheet with cells
2:19 > sheet window: row1=1, 3, 4, 2, 7> hit "apply" icon> note: now it shows the column graph
2:42 > sheet window: row1=1, 3, 4, 2, 7; row2=3, 5, 2, 6, 9> hit "apply" icon> note: > now it shows the comparison chart (row1 graph on the left, and row2 graph on the right)> you can also use the 1st icon from the left to import data in different file formats (text or CSV...)
3:06 > sheet window: hit the close icon to close the window
3:12 > "A": direct selection tool> canvas: select a column of the graph> top bar: fill=light blue> note: now the filled color of the column on the left graph is changed, but it won't affect the column on the right graph (not necessarily matching)> you need to adjust it by yourself
3:41 > top bar: stroke=none> canvas: select 2nd column on the left+right> top bar: filled=green> canvas: select 3rd column on the left+right> top bar: filled=orange> canvas: select 5th column on the left+right> top bar: filled=magenta
4:08 > canvas: select the chart text on y-axis> top bar: character=Komika (any other else font)
4:35 > canvas: select the whole graph> right click, hit "data" to open the sheet window again> sheet window: row1=1, 3, 12, 2, 7; row2=3, 5, 2, 6, 9> hit "apply" icon> note: the graph and the y-axis text will be updated, but the font will be kept
(Pie graph)
5:08 > "J": pie graph tool (or find in palette)> canvas: click, hold and drag to draw it> note: now the sheet window will come up> sheet window: row1=iPhone, iPad, MacBook, MacPro, iMac; row2=11, 30, 20, 35, 5> hit "apply" icon> note: now the pie and legends/info will be updated
5:48 > canvas: select all graphs of the pie> top bar: stroke=none> note: it's normally the default the author will do> canvas: select all the legends/info> top bar: character=any other else (change font)> "A": select the legends/info> "right": move them to a bit more right> select each legend/info and corresponding pie chart part> "I": use eyedropper tool to switch them to 1 color from the column graph> loop until all legends and pie chart part has their new color
6:23 > note: the pie chart now looks better but still not as sophisticated than some template designs created by author before, how to improve it even further? > strategy: create a hole, make it 3D, move a part away, add sheet numbers on parts
7:05 > canvas: select the whole pie chart> top panel: object, ungroup (instead of expand)> warning window: hit "OK" (will sacrifice the connection from chart to data sheet)
7:43 > "L": hold "shift", drag from the center of pie to draw a inner circle> canvas: select the circle and the pie shape> "shift+M": shape builder tool> "alt"+drag: remove the inner circle
7:50 > canvas: select the ring shape (result)> right click, hit "group"> top panel: effect, 3D, extrude & bevel
8:00 > 3D extrude & bevel window: [V] preview> drag the 3D cube around to get different visual angle> finally: angle=41, 17, 8 degree> hit "more options"> drag the point on the sphere to get different lighting angle> hit "OK"> note: we see the gray color doesn't work well in 3D
> canvas: select the ring result> appearance panel: eye off 3D extrude & bevel effect> "A": select the gray area and its gray legend> top bar: fill=darker brown> "A": select the 2 top area of the ring> canvas: move it up a bit, separately> appearance panel: eye on 3D extrude & bevel effect
9:44 > note: now it looks better (typical flow)> you can also mix in graphic styles which makes it look much cooler> with "recolor artwork" (select, it's on top bar), you can even remap the colors used in graphic style
Loved this video! Really helpful. Thank you so much!
Really helpful video. Got a project requiring graphs going on right now. This is a big help!
Well done and very helpful. It's too bad Illustrator doesn't have a good way of linking the data when applying the extrusion or pathfinder options.
I am learning illustrator ; I much helpful by seeing your video. I am bangladeshi . Thank you thank you so much for every single video. Bless for you sir.
Thank You! Quick And To The Point As It Should Be!
Hi, can you tell me the name or how do I make the last graph presented in your example (in minute 1:00)? (The one that look like stacked papers).
And that's how to give a video presentation. Enjoyed all of that, thanks!
Can you please show how you do the other graphs. Thank you
Installed, everything works, thanks!
I really like your videos and I get a lot out of them.
But since this topic (infographics) is my daily bread and butter job, i can add two things:
At 3:30 you say you have to manually select the corresponding columns, I still work in CS6 so I assume they didn't get rid of that, but if you use the group-selection tool (a sub tool of the direct selection tool) and double click on one column the corresponding columns will be selected as well. works for other elements of the graph es well!
The second thing that i stumbled over is how quick you lost the connection to the live data.
Depending on the job I would always suggest to keep these graphics (if feasible) alive, especially if you do reoccurring jobs like annual reports or things like that!
Since I daily have to re-edit old graphics we are really keen on not losing the connection to the data. First of all: 3d extrusions are applicable on live graphics! And if you want that donut 3d look, what you do first is: you create a donut clipping mask and apply it onto the pie chart. Then you do the 3D extrusion on this group. and there you go you have a 3D donut graphic that is still editable!
Thank you! I was just lamenting that loss of live data there
Hi, could you explain with every step the last part, about keeping the graph live but editable, I would appreciate
anyone can do circles and basic shapes in AI..
my question is how i can svg tag/attrib etc properly.. for web animations, and in general use..
i think people mostly use some JS library for graphs...
or do designers actually make graphs and coders have to re-create them in code still ?
i'm self-teaching coding atm... and when i wanna relax a bit, i learn Ai :D
You should create some videos and share man!
Thank you

Bro! it's Amazing You solved my problem! Thanks!!!
Fantastic tutorial! but like many other viewers I am having difficulty successfully beveling the 3d extrusion of the "ring" pie graph. I am able to ungroup the initial pie circle from the legend, and ungroup it further into individual pie pieces and then make the void in the center- however after that point Illustrator does not allow me to regroup the ring into a group. When I select the ring to extrude and bevel its appearance, the extrusion is made in segments, like many crescent shapes of different colors instead of a single multi-colored ring. If I group the ring WITH the legend again, i can successfully extrude the ring as a single piece, but then my legend ALSO becomes extruded. Any tips? What am i doing wrong?
Thank you man for sharing this stuff
Always nice to learn a few new tricks. Helpful video and some comments are helpful as well.
great tutorial!
Super helpful, thank you!
Quick tip: instead of 3D effecting and breaking apart a chunk, just color the chunk that's important and keep the rest in grey tones. Add a quick line of text for any clarification, and use the same color as the chunk for a few key words or phrases that explain the data clearly. The viewer will know it's the important chunk and you won't overwhelm their cognitive processing with unnecessary colors and depth, which makes it harder to see size relationships.
OMG thank you so much im in college atm (getting a degree in web development) I have a computer illustrator class and i have never used illustrator cc or any of adobe cloud tools
This video is amazing and helpful

What is the solution with the RAM memory in Illustrator?
As always, everything is super. Waiting for new crack from your team
Thanks for help me.
Good job
The step at 7:40 doesn't work for me. I've ungrouped, drawn the circle, but it doesn't separate into individual parts, just selects the entire circle. Can't select individual portions or draw with alt as he explains.
Try this, keep selecting and ungrouping until there is nothing left to ungroup. Then select only the pie circle and group it by itself, then use the "direct selection" tool with alt.
@@tristanburke6575 have you ever run into Illustrator telling you that the pie segments (which now form the ring) cannot be re-grouped? thats the issue I keep running into- see my comment below.
Thanks
Whats "opt"?
Best of the best
thank you so much
hello good job, thanks

Sooo trueeee
just tried to cut out the pie chart simply doesn't work it just deletes' the circle .
Same thing happened to me until I realised I forgot to go ungroup the pie segments fully before doing so.
I haven’t created a single project on there. On my iPhone and iPad on the other hand, I’ve created multiple s and soft in just one
