Man you have no idea how hard that made me and my buddy laugh when we read you just slamming it into gear until you got the right one😂 thats was really great! Thanks for the feedback hahah. Great comment.
The really cool advantage of having a manual transmission vehicle is that most car thieves only know how to drive automatics. So owning a 3 on the tree or any stick shift vehicle can be a great theft deterrent
I love my 1970 Chevy C/10 3-on-the-tree! No A/C, no power steering, all drum brakes, longbed, but really fun to drive behind that 350! Bought that truck back in 2015 when I was 17, and 5 years later, still runnin great! Glad they don't make em anymore, makes them more rare, but VERY hard to find parts!
@@Alexander-jr8nw well said. In Philippines, only rich people drive automatics. I do see a few Mitsubishi trucks with the column shifter. I once ridden in one to get home due to my car broken down and had to leave it in a parking lot for the night.
Love the vid!!! I just picked up a 1969 Ford 100 Ranger. Despite driving stick all my life had never heard of 3 on the tree. Cant wait to get the tags and take it for a spin.
3 speed on the column was the standard transmission on many trucks and cars in the 1960's into the 70's......A generic term for a vehicle with a manual transmission was a 'standard transmission'
Doubt it will happen because there isn't really a point unless you have bench seats plus with only 3 gears you're gonna run at higher revs which means less mileage. They did make some 4 and 5 speeds on the column for a while which would be more likely to come back but since bench seats are mostly a thing of the past I doubt it, especially since the linkage being longer has often lead to reliability issues.
There is a reason they do not use them anymore. Fuel mileage has a lot to do with it. Most of them were in pickup trucks and 1st gear was usually too high and 3rd gear wasn't high enough.
They could do it with a borg Warner overdrive setup like back in the day. The truck ratios for ford were 2.97, 1.75, 1, and .70. Very similar to the 4R70W automatic.
Since I am close to 70 years old, I remember these 3 speed manual transmissions with a shift lever on the steering column. In my young years my parents had a 1966 Rambler American with a three speed column shift with over drive. So a long time ago I did get to drive a three speed column shift car.
cool video, at near the 7 minute mark when you accelerated then decelerated in second gear, WOW! great sounding exhaust pipes. I learned to drive a three on the tree in a 1969 mercury cyclone in 1986 with 351W and sweet sounding pipes! thank you for reminding of some fond memories.

Ugh! Oh how I WISH this video had existed 35 yrs. ago! My Dad was incapable of explaining ANYTHING. I learned to drive a standard transmission in a F-100 like that one! Sucked.
I was taught to shift a 3 speed using the palm of my hand just like you shifted from first to reverse when you first started to explain how to shift... I was taught to never grab the shifter.... nice foot work with the peddles!!!
Thank you for the feedback. I’ve never seen that way, interesting. I just taught myself to grab it so I can be certain of what gear I’m always in. Just how I’ve done it. Thanks again for the feedback.
A lot of folks on hills would do one of 2 things, either rev'r up real big and slip the clutch or rev'r up and dump the cutch fearing the roll back which could result in barking the tires.
Great vid! But I learned Many years ago how to drive a 3 on the column I was about 13 or 14 back then and learned by instruction and driving my grandfather's 1967 ford f100 pickup he taught me to drive In that very truck and to this day I still vividly remember it and driving that old 3 on the column
Great video! Never thought about keeping my clutch foot "stiff" like you described, I'll give it a shot next time I get my hands on a manual car. Oh and btw awesome truck you got, can't find many rust free examples in Pennsylvania!
Thank you for the feedback! And yea we’re super lucky over here. My truck is actually really bad for California rust with bad drip rails and bad floors.
Not all vehicles are the same as that one. Mine is a '67 with a low geared tranny. High speed is 35 MPH. You don't need to gun that motor so much. I have been driving one for 37 years.
Been driving British manuel's, gonna be picking up a 50s caddy and I really dont want to destroy the gearbox, this video really has helped, and tips or advice would be appreciated
Thats Awesome, my 64 Ford F100 had a three on the tree. then the linkage broke so we cut a hole in the floor and stuck the shifter in the floor. I wish it still had the three on the tree.
10:30 I would have failed my UK driving test for doing that little roll back (at least that's what my instructor told me). Hill start facing up-hill is so much easier on the clutch with the parking brake hand-operated.
modern cars have a "hill hold" feature that holds the brakes for 2 seconds to give you a chance to get on the gas. Old American cars have the foot brake that make that difficult.
Good theft deterrent!!!! Not many people these days could drive one..I’m an old fart, grew up with these. I’ve seen a 61 galaxy that had 4 speed on the column, with shifter in neutral you pulled a lever under the dash for reverse, push the lever back in and first gear would be where reverse is on 3 on the tree.
I like how I've been subbed for like 2 years and thus is barely happening lmao. Hey better late than never. Also I love the fact that after a gear you don't rev the engine as you are letting of the clutch good job (that burns the shit out of the clutch)
You really don't need to give it much gas if any. I can drive my 2014 Chevy from first through about 4 gear without ever touching the gas just off idle.
I've been driving the same manual car for 14 years and I never need the gas pedal rev-match on upshifts, just shift at the right speed so that the revs drop the right amount ;) I rev match shifting down of course. Great video, thanks, I'd love to drive a 3 on the tree!
I rarely Rev match on downshifts. I normally just brake until I need to push the clutch in to go to neutral, then select the right gear at the right speed. I don't jerk or cause the rpms to jump, I just know my gearbox and I'm just driving normally I guess. I don't drive slow but I don't have a lead foot.
Yeah rev matching is really more for driving like a racecar. I moved to the country and bought a 4x4 F-150 so manual transmission is sadly just a memory now.
I'm fairly certain I won't ever have to put this knowledge to use, but I'm glad to have it. Nicely done. Also, I just noticed I'm wearing the exact same shoes! Those are Nike SB Check Solar's lol
To speed shift a 3 in the tree, you should hold the shifter down close to the steering column. That results in much less radius motion with your arm and hand; otherwise, it becomes easier to miss 2nd gear.
My dad always said, if you can drive a three on the tree, you can drive anything. He was so correct!!! I still drive a manual Tacoma to this day, but sorry to say it's getting harder to find a vehicle with a manual trans.

I got mine fixed on my 66' ford it's normally not hard to fix. On a manual transmission vehicle it's an absolute must to me. Plus it's called an emergency brake for a reason. On pre-1967 vehicles with single bowl master cylinders if you lose a brake line you completely lose your brakes, however pulling the E brake can still be used to slow down.

I have a 1968 F100 with a 3 on a tree and the ring part on the shifter broke because of the use and common gear (2nd) every time someone shifted hard in that gear the shifter would pop out of the ring, did it ever happen to any manual cars you drove and if so can you let me know so I could find out more about my shifter so I can rebuild it at some point because my father is convincing me to put either a 4 or 5 speed on the truck lol. Love your truck keep up the videos!
