  • Distance learning and virtual teaching have brought many challenges for students and teacher, alike. Students are having a difficult time adjusting to the online platform and teachers are struggling to connect and engage with students in order to provide them with the best education possible. One of the biggest sources of frustration other teachers and I are experiencing is students simply not handing in work. It is especially maddening with students who you know are intelligent and fully capable are just flat out refusing to do it, perhaps because they believe they will be passed on the way they were 4th quarter of last year. But we have no idea how long this COVID paradigm is going to last and we need to express the importance NOW of getting with the program and taking their education seriously, lest they fall even farther behind .

Unfortunately, even in higher education enabling lack of accountability is seeping into everything. We have people seriously advocating no deadlines, no late penalties, no zeroes, etc. Everything and anything but holding them accountable.

Well said, friend. What do you recommend if there is a lack of accountability culture at the school itself?

Excellent question. I think a lot of schools are experiencing that the past few years. I wish I knew the answer.

Most likely, the accademic hoops that they are being obliged to jump through have little to no relationship with what they are anticipating the future to hold. The world and the people around them will be making them nihilistic and they lack the inspiration to learn "whatever" the curriculem is.
If the only options they feel they will have thanks to a post covid world are dead end menial jobs they will be LUCKY to get and keep.... "whats the point in school?".
When their future is no more international travel, wrecked ecconomies, devalued currencies and so on... Inspiration and faith is what they are deficient in.... I'd start there.

the problem about online school is that students really don’t care, personally i haven’t learned anything from online school and i know tons of students who haven’t either.

How much are YOU actually putting into it? Students can’t expect teachers to carry 98% of the weight and come away from the experience with any kind of education. In my experience, students are using the pandemic as an excuse to be lazy and play Minecraft and then wonder why they aren’t getting anything out of the exchange. I’ve got plenty of students who are excelling, but many of those who aren’t are the same ones who don’t care in-person, either.

@@ClassroomConfidential me and a bunch of other students are trying our best, despite that we learn almost nothing. my classmates in my ap classes that normally have A’s are scoring C’s, and they are the ones who try the most. i

Well, all you can do is try your best. I still believe that you get out of education what you put into it. You can’t put it all in your teachers; they are doing their best. I understand it is a struggle, but hopefully you can squeeze some value from this year.
