    Many thanks Dom for another informative and interesting video. You are a great help to those of us who live too far away to visit Ffynnon Taf frequently. As someone who lived through the awful destruction of the railways in Wales in the 1960s these developments are really heartening.

    Nice to see the excellent progress being made on a line that I often used in the late 60s to reach my place of work (Treforest Estate for Upper Boat power station). I'm glad that TfW now have the control of the Core Valley Lines as the Westminster government only really cares about financing London's transport.
    Around 1:22, you mentioned that there was no tactile paving on the platform. As someone who now relies upon a mobility scooter to get around, I can assure you that tactile paving would be enough to finally put me off train travel.
    This paving has been installed at the road crossings at my local hospital, and the vibrations caused my scooter to cut out unexpectedly and come to a dead stop.
    I did some research to make sure that my scooter was not at fault and found out that this is quite a common problem, so the risks of a sudden lurch at the platform edge are very real.

      That is very interesting and a fantastic point!
      I wonder if it would be feasible to change the design of tactile paving to be less intrusive to wheelchairs and mobility scooters while still providing feedback to the blind and partially sighted, there are many different types of tactile paving, Manchester Metrolink and Corydon trams have the "lozenge" type which might fix that issue. The new rolling stock TfW have ordered for the urban services around Cardiff, Newport and Maesteg will all be level boarding which will really benefit wheelchair and mobility scooter users as well as cyclists and anyone who struggles with the massive step up we currently have to put up with!
      Thank you for watching and commenting!

    Nice video. I think you should chance your arm and approach the contractor and Transport for Wales and ask if you can have a site visit.
    Point them at the videos that Dawlish Beech Cams have been making about the rebuilding of Dawlish Station. You (and they) have a one-time opportunity to get the transformation of the South West Metro Lines documented, for future historians. They might need to get you a bit of site safety training and give you a baby-sitter to make sure you don't accidentally put yourself at risk, but if they can get you on-site when some work is happening, and get you some nerd-level information about specific bits of work, they can use you to help pass on progress information to local people.

    Thanks for keeping us updated on Metro progress. It's a shame a member of the public has to step up since there is so little communication from TFW and the Welsh Government. Keep it up :)

      Thanks for the kind words :)
      I do wish TfW gave us a lot more insight into what's going on, I've messaged them a few times now with queries about work on the network and they've just responded with a generic "here's a link to a bit of our website that doesn't have anything to do with your query" response. That combined with the little snippets of conflicting plans you occasionally hear that just add to the confusion, its difficult at times to piece together what exactly is going on and when!

      It's not just transport for Wales that don't keep you up dated it's the same with east west rail, for some reason they've gon quiet as well,

    A Metro for Cardiff and the Valleys. Nothing for the South East Valley, which is typical for Cardiff Bay. The closet we have come is a new car park at Pontypool Road, which is still closed a year after completion.

    The old branch line you mention is actually the Glamorganshire Canal that looped around Garth Works next to the on slip and hard sholder!

    • @WalesRails
      @WalesRails  2 роки тому +1

      According to RailMapOnline, OpenRailMap and a few other sources I've found, the bridge I go under at 6:21 was the Walnut Tree Branch Line, a branch of the Rhymney Line that went from a junction with the Merthyr line around Taff's Well station, round into the penrhos cutting and leading into the massive junction in Caerphilly, The route is now a cycle trail which I have used on occasion. By contrast, the Glamorganshire Canal route very closely follows what is now the A470 all the way from Tongwynlais up to Nantgarw china works, where it jutted out a bit.
      Hope this helps, thanks for watching :)

      @@WalesRails hi Dom at Taffswell there was 4 standard gauge Railways and one Narrow Gauge (Pentyrch rly), the railway that is now known as the Taff Trail was the original Rhymny Railway route with a Junction at Taffswell with the Taffvail railway, the Barry Railway crossed the Valley on the Walnutree Viaduct above all the other railways , the Cardiff Railway continued after Cotyton through Tongwynlais and Taffswell the line went under the road near Ty Rhiw behind the cottages by the timber yard to Nantgarw, Upperboat, Rhydyfelin and over the river to Treforest Junction.

    Great video Dom.
    As you mentioned its very odd not to have tactile paving. The slabs look to be the same size as what would normally be the tactile slabs. 🤔 Has someone installed them upside-down 🤣

    • @WalesRails
      @WalesRails  2 роки тому

      Thank you!
      I still have no clue why the slabs aren't tactile, but according to TfWs latest video the reason they were replaced was to raise them up higher to allow for level boarding, which again is really odd since there is no noticeable difference in height between the old and new ones next to them, I've seen this as well at Danescourt station which has received the same treatment. Thanks for watching!

    i can`t understand, what the 2 spurs are for! only thing off to the left, is the by pass, castle and little village, going to be some major road works there, if they are going to connect in a newport link!

    Is that all to do with the new South Wales Metro scheme. Very nice tracks. Impressive stuff.

      Yes, the new depot and control centre in Taff's Well is the heart of the South Wales Metro scheme, the new track switches will divert trains from the line into and out of the depot
