Before we start today’s video, did you guys ever think Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz looks a lot like Adam Ritchman from Man vs Food? Let me know in the comments section. Anyways, The San Francisco band Counting Crows burst onto the scene in 1991. One year later the band recorded a demo tape that got the attention of 9 record labels who were in a frenzy to sign the group. The band soon signed wth Nirvana’s label Geffen Records, more specifically their subsidiary DGC. By the later part of 1993 the band would release their debut record August and Everything After which would go on to sell a whopping 7 million copies stateside. The album was helped due to the success off several big singles, but none bigger than the lead one, Mr. Jones. But you guys maybe surprised to know that Mr. Jones was never supposed to be released as a single and it’s success took the band, their label and management by surprise... Either way Mr. Jones would become one of the most inescapable songs from the 90’s. But who was Mr. Jones and what’s the story behind the song. That’s what were going to discuss in today’s video.
Prior to forming Counting Crows, frontman Adam duritz played in a variety of bands including the group named the Himilayans. It was by 1991 Duritz joined forces with guitarist and producer David Bryson forming Counting Crows, originally playing as an acoustic duo. They would eventually expand their lineup to a full rock band and it was shortly after signing to DGC, the band landed a high profile appearance at the rock n’ roll hall of fame in january of 1993. It was during this time they were working on their debut August & Everything After and they were filling in for no show inductee Van Morrison.
The band landed the gig thanks to Gary Gersch who worked at Geffen Records and signed the band. Gersch introduced them to the rock hall’s musical director. Fast forward to September of 1993 and they would releasee their debut record August and Everything After. The group’s label and management took an old school approach when it came to marketing the band on radio..In fact it was so old fashioned, some claimed it was revolutionary. During the month the album was released, the label would issue the record to college, alternative and modern rock radio formats with program directors getting to choose the first single The band’s manager would tell Rolling Stone in 1994 “The marketing plan for this band-such as it was-really was to have no marketing plan. We just wanted to let the record get out there and give people a chance to see the band and have the pleasure of discovering them on their own.” Counting Crows would hit the road prior to the album coming out pening for the likes of the the cranberries, midnight oil, Suede and Cracker. Side note guys i’ve done whole band histories on cranberries and cracker.
The state of Georgia would be instrumental in giving the band some early momentum. Radio stations WKLS or 96 Rock and WNNX in Atlanta as well as Georgia State radio station WRAS were one of the first stations to play the track Mr. Jones in November of 93. The success of the song in the Georgia Radio markest signalled to DGC that Mr. Jones was the logical first single to release with the label issuing it as a promo single December of 93. What’s funny is that frontman Adam Duritz would reveal to Huffington Post that the label initially thought that Murder of One would be the big hit off the album, while the band thought Rain King would be the big single. In December of 93 the music video for Mr. Jones would be added to MTV’s buzz bin which further propelled the song’s popularity.
In January of 94 Counting Crows would appear on Saturday Night Live as the musical guest performing Mr. Jones and Round Here. Duritz would reveal in multiple interviews that by the time Mr. Jones became a hit, their debut album wasn’t even in the top 200, it was their appearance on SNL that propelled the album moving 40 spots up the charts for 6 consecutive weeks all the way to number 2. The New York Times would report and I have to admit this surprised me, that August and Everything After hit platinum before Nirvana’s Nevermind did. Mr. Jones would peak at number 2 on the US Top 40 charts by the spring of 94. The
Not a fan of the band…
But a fan of this channel…
Always interesting stories 🤩
same, he could tell me stories about any band I actively hate, although Im only indifferent to counting crows despite everyone knowing this song because of radio.
That obv. means you’re a fan really 🤔 😎
It's the singer. That weepy voice combined with such glaring douchery. Just, no.
Im a death metal/heavy metal guy, and i think mr. Jones is a fuckin' jam.
@@Peasant_in_a_tree I’m more of a pistols and Ramones fan… he looked like a monkey jumping up and down while trying to keep his jacket on and then tries to keep his jacket off, complete with cringy fringe! Don’t tell me that’s not funny!!! 😂😜😉
August And Everything After is a gorgeous album, 5 stars, and i’m not even huge into counting crows like that
100% agree.
Absolutely, love it. Too bad they resent their biggest hit and don't play it anymore.
You should all check out Recovering The Satellites, it's also an amazing record. Angels of the Silences is incendiary.
Agreed. Also a front-runner in 90’s bands’ usage of singing “yeah” on an album.
I have it on cassette and it sits half way into my deck in my truck. When nothing is on the radio I push it in. I've listened to that album so much that I know the order of the songs before they start. It's such a good album. Every song is good.
Every time I listen to Mr. Jones..I always remember when I first heard it when I was in San Francisco..up late with my sister watching music videos… I turn 18 out there and I was just getting into listening to rock music… I instantly fell in love with the song. Still love it to this I day. I LOVE August and Everything After…I love EVERY single track on that album. Ages later I still enjoy it.❤❤❤❤
Man I’ve been dying for a video about Counting Crows such an amazing band that is really under appreciated for the quality of songs and albums they have.
August And Everything After is a flawless album.
Great band, great song! Their follow up album, Recovering The Satellites, is one of the best albums of all time.
I really enjoyed counting crows back in the 90s and I still have a few of their songs on rotation in my play list. I think they have made good music over the years.👍
They had a run of three great albums, though Recovering the Satellites was the standout. This Desert Life had big shoes to fill and did a decent enough job, but Satellites was their masterpiece, pushing radio-friendly rock as far as it could go and showing that Duritz is one of the finest lyrical storytellers of his generation.
Total agree
Absolutely love Counting Crows, Adam Duritz is such a great songwriter......and I noticed a few years back his twin is Adam Richman.
That album is so awesome. I just moved to the Bay area right after that album dropped. That was a very special and exciting time in my life and that album and third eye blinds first album was the soundtrack to it. Awesome times.
Loved the Crows back in the day - August and Everything After was my goto for road trips. Mr Jones was so catchy, but Murder of One is still my favorite.
"The Rain King" is mine.
Although I'm mostly into old heavy stuff August is one of my favorite chill, mellow albums and it still gets plenty of rotations in my house.
Absolutely every song on this album is a hit. Normally there are always a few songs that are considered skip-able on any given album... not this one.
I didn't buy it til like 2011 or something, I heard a song for the first time in a bar, I think it was track 6 or 7, if it was a single it wasn't as big in Canada as Mr Jones, but I realised I loved it and bought the album for fun
I'm watching the video, it was Rain King
@@dsxa918what a fantastic song. Among a lp worth of fantastic songs.
My second favourite album of all time next to the Joshua Tree! This video is coming out at a perfect time for me since im seeing them for the first time live in less than a week from now! I’m so excited and this adds to the hype!
Lucky you! I wanna go
@@GuitarNTheCar I’ve been waiting so long I can’t wait! I hope you get to see them down the road too!
I was literally thinking this question 2 days ago while learning it on guitar, and wished there was a “story behind the song” video… now here we are 48 hours later with the exact video I was looking for.
August and everything after is a beautiful album!
Kenney Dale Johnson is the man, Chris Isaak hit the jackpot.
Thanks for the video. I met Marty Jones in St John, Virgin Islands years ago and always wondered if he was the real Mr Jones. You told the story word for word. He was working in the solar business last I heard.
So I saw the Crows on the final night of that ridiculous 18 month tour they did in support of August... It was a make-up date in Toronto at concert club (Warehouse or Guvernment, can't recall). Anyway, Duritz was soooooo burned out at that point, he absolutely didn't wanna be there and everyone could tell. One of only two shows I ever walked out of in over 700 concerts, it was so bad. Adam was butchering his own songs as some kind of protest, and it was hard to watch. Was worried about him for a while after that, but so glad they came through it and are still doing great shows today.
Love this song and I learned how to play it on guitar as soon as it first came out when I was in grade 8 lol
Well now I see the similarities between them, and will never be able to unsee it! THANKS A LOT! 😅
Love Adam Duritz
Cranberries n Cracker just needs a band called Cream Cheese and we have ourselves a tasty bill.
I thought August and Everything After was a great album. Omaha came out when I was living there, that was a bit surreal. It's unfortunate to hear that Adam struggled with fame so early, especially with self-consciousness about his appearance. Imagine finally being recognized for your talent only to have it overshadowed by people critizing your looks.
The same thing happened to Christopher Cross. He had a great voice and put out some amazing songs, but once MTV came along and people wanted to see the real face behind those songs…
I think you can figure out the rest.
@waverlyking6045 That's so sad. Imagine all the incredible music we would miss if we only paid attention to conventionally beautiful artists.
@waverlyking6045 Rick Beato just posted an interview with Christopher Cross today. I'm curious to see if he talks about that part of the music business or not.
@@dream_in_digital I’ll have to check that out. Thanks.
I always thought he looked like Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons in the early years, but he definitely looks like Adam Richmond now.
Nobody has ever seen these two guys in the same place in the same time. j/s
The person you refer to as Dave Bryson is actually Dan Vickrey.
I wondered why a pic of Adam and Dan was showing when the narration was referring to Bryson and Duritz starting Counting Crows. Very odd.
Best ever album round here best song
Wait, seriously? His look was sooo cool. That's messed up. We just got out of 80s glam and they want to talk about his style?
Mr Jones was his enis. Painting all the things gray.
Now that you made that Adam Richman comparison, I can't unsee it...
"i wanna be BOB DYLAN."
30 years ago… I’m getting old
my parents loved counting crows so i heard their stuffall the time as a little kid. i remember back then i thought 'Mr Jones' was noticeably goofy and weird, i also thought the narrator was just kind of in love with mr jones.
I always thought Mr Jones was referencing bob dylans Mr Jones, the song also has the line, I wish I was bob dylan
This is my favorite song!!
Totally agree - every time I watch Man Vs Food ... I would always say to myself, that's his twin!
Little known fact - his dreads were fake. Seriously. Saw it on pop up video back in the day
I knew Adam Richmond was the singer of CC!🤪🤣🤣🤣
Recovering the satellites is a great album too
Love this band! I'd heard somewhere around the release of this album that not only was "Mr. Jones" not supposed to be a single, but that the band didn't want singles, period. (Imagine that in this day and age, or then!) I'm guessing that the band wanted to gain fans the old-fashioned, word-of-mouth way:"Dude! You've gotta' hear these guys! They're killer!". Any band that doesn't want media help, especially when so many are DYING for such a break.....that's to be respected. To me, at least.
0:09 wait! Are you saying they're not the same guy?
Dang I always thought it was about bob Dylans " ballad of a thin man".....lol
Great video.
😂💭
The two Adams DO look just alike! I can't un-see it now
.....🤣🤣🤣🤣...
I’m a massive CC fan and my wife and I saw them a few years ago in Australia, they didn’t play Mr Jones and my wife to the very day is pissed hahaha. I always bring it up just to mess with her.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard them called “The Cunting Cows” 😂😂😂 every time I hear their name it’s all I can think of
Guilty of hating that band back in the day.
Some of the pics of Duritz look like he's got that Phil Spector thing going on
My dumbass thought it was "misses Jones" lol
Old skool Billy Paul
Those two guys really do look alike.
I think you should do something with Midnight Oil if ya have i never seen it but i always thought they were a band the was never as big as the should've been! In my opinion anyways!
Its me, im mr jones.
Maan I used to hate this song so much. I still do but I used to too.
Mr.Jones Was My Jr.HighSchool Math Teacher, That Got Angry WhenEver We Sang Those Lyrics Back to Him.😜
He also looks like that Duff guy from the cake show
OH MY GOD I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT THOUGHT HE LOOKS LIKE ADAM RICHMAN
I saw Adam on Joe Rogan and thought he looked like Patton Oswalt 🙄🤷
Yeah!
I think that the Counting Crows singer looks like the singer from The Melvins.
Round here is probably the best song on the album
I thought the same thing in the joe Rogan interview.
I’m actually creeped out about that song in 93 we heard it and I was served with a Elder Jones I am meeting another Used to sing Elder Jones and I found out the guy lived in Eugene. That’s where survive mission that’s why I think it’s creepy.
Yeah, they're the same person
Yeah !, I do see the resemblance...must be the same person !!!!
so what name is blocked over?
Man vs Food and. man Sleeps With ‘Friends’ Actresses could be brothers.
I’m relieved to not be the only one thinking this.
Honest question:
When you say 7 million copies states side, and 10 million world wide, does that include the 7 million sold in America? Or is it 10 million additional sales? Rock on!
🤘😎🤘
Ahem... me!
Is Adam wearing a wig in those more recent concert photos?
Never really been a big fan of Counting Crows, but, it's nice finally having this mystery solved. Lmao, now we can put to rest, the ridiculous rumors about Mr. Jones being his penis!!! 😂😂😂😂
Fan of this band. Never heard that rumor, though. Strange.
Duh, it's about me😎
That wasn't David Bryson.
Thank you, I saw that too
Still can’t believe that guy got the cream of the 90’s crop when it comes to hot Hollywood chicks…
I TOTALLY see your point, trust me. But.......when you're in a famous band...
1:51 Are you not allowed to say or show the name "Paul Shaffer"?
Really!
Adam Richmond with a photoshop wig
The Himalayans version of "round here" is amazing!
it was 💯 about jesus, x (everything is) calliope
No he looks like Scott Stapp and Patton Oswalt had a baby. At least now days anyway.
Weird about him being mocked for his appearence after appearing on the Rogan podcast. Almost as if Rogan cultivates a certain type of audience...
I can't believe im curious about this as i really hated this song like really hated it.
I thought this was about Amy Winehouse 😂
Not a fan of the band. Counting Crows on the radio station meant change the channel. It was the beginning of Whiney Rock.
Good channel though love the content
👍
His appearance?lmao. Apparently the hot famous women he dated didn't care.
Love it, lol!😂
Holy Fuck what a good Idea for a video
Didn’t labels take issue with these guys sounding too much like Van Morrison?
Not a bad thing.
@@joeymorvant161 Not at all, but they were getting passed on by labels because of it.
God, the ridiculousness of radio and getting on the playlist.
@@genghis_connie Oh, wow. Had no idea.
@@joeymorvant161 wild, right? It probably played to their favor, after all.
@@genghis_connie It IS wild, especially because they sounded so unique, meaning that no other bands of that time\genre were sounding like Van Morrison.
He looks fine, he's in a rock band, it's not a beauty contest... but some of those shots of his hair are ridiculous. Is he wearing a wig as a joke on "the old days"? Man.
Of those 7million albums sold, 6 million had to be from those mail order record clubs where youd get 10 for a penny or whatever it was
That's cold, and hilarious! I say this as a fan of theirs. THAT'S how funny your comment was!😂
I HAAAAAAAAAAAATE this song
I feel the opposite.
Hmmm...yeah, I can see that resemblance. Add the same fake dreads, bit of face-fuzz, and there ya go.
Otherwise, I'm not down with Duritz and his band. I had that yawp of his jammed in every orifice when that album came out, and it was no surprise when they turned out to be fueled by payola (as mentioned in several vids). Look into the "1990s Indie Promoter" scandal/legal probe, and you'll find them staring back at you.
Sorry to bust your fan bubbles, gang...but they were an Industry Plant, plain and simple. Gotta watch that...
Ok. Still a fan, though.
THESE VIDEO CLIPS ARE SOOOOOOOO CHEESY
August and Everything After is the only good album in Counting Crows' discography.
Not so.
I honestly could have sworn it was about his genitals.
That's the band that I changed the channel when their videos came on. Never liked them.
Ok....
Jew's helping other jew's.
Counting crowes suck ass
To you.
Counting Crows are a great band! I really enjoy their earlier albums! They're in my top 10 growing up years bands! It's probably nostalgia that has them so high in my opinion. But I don't care! Also any band and I mean ANY, Hell Aqua (Barbie Girl) is better than anything Kurt Cobain wrote! He couldn't even play guitar worth a damn!
Kurt played guitar well enough to kill hair metal.
Kurt wasn't the best guitarist, but not bad, either. I don't think that musical greatness was really Nirvana's purpose or point.
this singers claim to fame is that he got dumped by Jennifer Aniston for Brad Pitt...ouch
