Well I don't think it was very democratic what was done to him since yes he did appeal to common folks that's why they voted for him and did accomplish more than most too so should be celebrated for that instead of vilified for occasional binge drinking which I think he was accused of by many hypocrites who probably drink too much themselves at times. He was only 46 when he died too so why tell a forty year old guy he's unfit for office if he drinks on the odd weekend when he was elected likely by a bunch of guys that do the same thing that's populism for you. The one the people want in office they are told they can't have? It's not as if he was an alcoholic either but even if he were look at Winston Churchill comparatively. He's a reflection of the city I suppose Toronto had some issues so did Rob but he may still have been a good guy and Toronto may still have been a good city despite some flaws. Rex too now I think was "canceled" pretty much for unacceptable views or something so the media is fickle and unforgiving sometimes.

It's as if he is talking about an entirely different #RobFord and certainly not the Rob he eviscerated in a previous commentary. It's unfortunate that Rex continues to totally unimpress with wiggly a set of principals as an over cooked noodle days old chicken soup from a dock canteen from the shores of NewFoundLand.Ahh Rex, where did ya go by?

This poor man was ruthlessly beaten down it seems like on a daily basis by the media and fellow politicians and the ignorant . Shame on them. They should be so lucky not to have to deal with Addiction. Yes he should have stepped down. But his addiction clouded his judgements and decisions. His addiction changed his behaviour but never changed the man. He was by all accounts a decent human being . He will go down in history showing the world no matter who you are, no matter what you do , what addiction could do to a decent person. No one is immune . RIP Rob Ford . God Bless you Rex. You once again bailed it.

+Kathryn Cooper he was a garbage human being. he called an elderly woman with cancer a "beggar" for asking for his help getting into subsidized housing. he slandered and insulted people for doing their jobs. he clearly had zero interest in the health and safety of the people of Toronto. he was a bigot. an angry, hateful, judgemental, dishonest person.
being a junky and a drunk isn't an excuse or cause of any of those other things. he was just a terrible person that was good at lying to people, blaming others and being angry.

Have these Rob Ford haters ever suffered from addiction or lived with someone who had? If the answer is No to both please educate yourselves on the effects that addiction does to one's mind ones impulse control one's ability to make good decisions. and do on. Yes he should have stepped down long enough to clean himself up and then reenter the public arena whereally he was voted in . Even that latter decision he could not make because of addiction. so you haters out there please educate yourselves before demonizing an individual with a disease .

Great words Rex. He was indeed everything and more. From delivering a Pizza for a friend and then earning the trust of a new voter because of that humble deed. It was simplicity with everyone he connected. These are indeed rarities among the populace that are elected. Yet he lead the war as a real human being who understood the meaning of kindness to those who lacked it.

I think he captures the essence of Rob Ford quite nicely. I disagreed with him a lot politically, I didn't think (and still don't) think he was qualified to be Toronto's mayor, and his personal flaws were obvious. But there was a fundamental kindness to him that did endear him to people, and I am sad that he's gone.

You should have done your heart felt eulogy at his funeral Rex - however to suggest that because he died at a young age from a vicious disease and now now sprinkle about that he was a great man because he was common as dirt with a gifted natural connection to the common man that therefore he should be auraized is in of itself a twisted view of this cartoon of a human being ...his mocking was well deserved and under any measure a horrifically flawed man in every way possible. This perception that Mr. Ford was in touch and concerned over the travails of the common citizen to the point of having his cell number made public and all the alleged good he did only cries out to me that the perception was and still is way ahead of the reality and his death will not change that actuality no matter how heart felt you make it.... I personally have no feelings one way or another about his death but don't try and sell me this drivel that because of his death we should give a free pass as to the lunatic he actually was.

"Wonderfully gifted emotionally". Is that Mr. Murphy's typically grandiloquent way of making an excuse for his not being so intellectually? While the common touch is something that Ford had in common with Ralph Klein, aside from being right wing (I wonder how many in "Ford Nation" heard the Washington DC radio interview when Ford revealed just how far to the right he was) the resemblance ends there.

I'm sorry, but this bit of post-death revisionism is a crock of shit. Rob Ford was not only ignorant and offensive, but he took delight in expressing those things. He went out of his way to show you who he really was, and who he really was wasn't anything to praise. And Rex Murphy took as much delight in pointing that out at the time as anyone else in the media did.
The old adage, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" is appropriate here. Better that than this piece of intellectual dishonesty.
