The supreme, the quintessential film noir. Jacques Tourneur was a talent bordering on, and often spilling over genius, and he is not appreciated enough nowadays.
I couldn't agree more, about Tourneur or the film. I'm a huge film noir guy, and there are plenty to admire in the genre, but Out of the Past, is indeed, 'the one'.
In one of the most beloved of the classic film-noirs, Jane Greer was the prettiest, the sexiest and the most devilish of femme-fatales as Kathie in "Out Of The Past". Watch as she performs the bit of business to smoke a cigarette. Mitchum is so cool he doesn't light it for her. Jane Greer was 23 years old in this picture.
He's a superb actor. Always liked him in Night of the Hunter, Cape Fear, Friends of Eddie Coyle, etc, but I always go back to this one. His Jeff Markum/Bailey, is a performance for the ages.
Thanks I always wanted to know that title, the other Tune in the movie is ,”come out ,come out wherever you are “ From “step lively “1944.This movie is truly one of the greatest ,,what a cast, superb.

This movie has a quality that the more you watch it, the more it grows on you.
Definitely in my top 5 favorite noir films. My god Jane Greer was just mesmerizing on the eyes throughout this fantastic film.

OUT OF THE PAST (1947) is my 2nd favorite Film Noir of all time; it's a true Classic of the genre.
Agreed! My very favorite is probably "Double Indemnity"!

Kathy "Did you miss me?"
Jeff "No more than I would my eyes"
Unique masterpiece with three fantastic actors. Love it
It always gets me how she never takes her shot
What do you mean?
This theme was a pop song called "The First Time I Saw You." It was a 1937 song. It was from a Paramount picture called The Toast Of New York.
"The Toast of New York" was an RKO Radio picture, as was "Out of the Past".
Very lush, sentimental theme! Didn't it reaappear in a modified form, later in the movie?
dallyx66 that's really cool to know! Thanks for the information.

Thanks for sharing this, but honestly, I'd rather see the entire film or nothing and not six cues.
