Thank you very much!! My camera is still not working, but I am glad I was able to take it apart and put it back together. Excellent tutorial. I only have 3 screws left :D

This is the most complete repair video I have seen. I have repaired cameras for thirty years, but have little experience with digital. I was able to disassemble and repair an SX50 HS that was donated with this video. The problem was a piece of plastic (burr) in one of the zoom gears. After removing this the camera came to life, and is great for stills and video. Thank you for this great video.

Just spent the past 1.5 hours following along. Managed to clean up the inside of my lens and get it all back together with no issues.
Several of my bolts were salt encrusted and very rusty - a reflection of life living by the sea.
    Thanks for the video.

I had a stuck shutter issue with my camera. Your video was extremely helpful in getting down into the lens assembly. I had to forge ahead alone for the rest of the repair though.
I had to completely disassemble the lens assembly. It was not pretty. There are 4 lenses that have to be aligned in specific slide rails at exact degrees of rotation. On top of that there are seemingly microscopic springs, pins and ball bearings. One of the springs I lost for 2 days until my wife, against all odds, found it in our bed. Assembly resumed and I only just got it back together after a week or so of it sitting in a thousand pieces at my desk. AND IT WORKED!!!
Thanks again for your video. I would've been lost without it.

Hi Erik! This is re: Canon SX50 lens repair you pulled off years ago. Could you elaborate a bit on how you aligned all those lenses, did you use any alignment equipment, are there marks to put them back into exact place/angle they're supposed to be in, was there some manual you found? Jay's assembly tutorial is wonderful, but I'm afraid I knocked out the camera's alignment after dropping it, so I'm thinking whether I should chance a disassembly and reassembly of the lens with no manual handy... Thanks a lot.

@@AntonBregolas it’s been soooooooo long since I did that project. It is all but a foggy memory. I have the vague recollection of alignment parts in it but that memory is blurred into the memory of another lens I worked on that didnt go so well. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help

VERY helpful. The inside of my lens got hazy from condensation after getting wet and nothing would clear it away. THis dissembly is not for the faint of heart, but I was an electronics tech in the Navy 40 years ago so had a little confidence, did separate cups to keep the screws straight like he suggested, discharged the capacitor with a spare headlamp bulb from my car after bending the pins straight, and it all works. It took me a couple hours. THank you!

Thank you for the video my camera was dropped in sand lens first, When i turned it on the lens was making some terrible noises. After taking it down to where this video got to i had to take apart the gearbox for one grain of sand. I put it back together and it works perfectly now.
    Thank you very much

My camera had an E32 error code with a seemingly twisted lens (I could see inside the lens; like half of a vignette effect thing). When it went full zoom it kinda moved diagonally and after a minute on the camera turned off by itself, presenting the error. I followed this video and made it to the lens. I had no means to clean it and everything looked alright too; nothing out of place. I reassembled it following the video as well, and the problem was gone! Thank you, Jay!

Thank you for this excellent tutorial. By removing the casing as you showed step by step I was able to use forced air on the lens extender to correct a problem that showed as a Lens Error on the screen. You saved me an expensive repair or unwanted new camera purchase. I appreciate your effort in producing this video.

Thank you for this great video that gave me everything I needed to fix my SX50 HS. My favorite camera for capturing images of birds had developed a flawed area on the senor. I was able to buy a factory refurbished lens/sensor assembly on eBay and with your video was able to restore the camera to like new condition.

Thanks a lot Jay, the video helped me a lot. I had a shutter issue, and your instructions got me down to the problem area. There was no way I was going to get all the lenses and things out of that barrel though. But maybe I lucked out. I could see the shutter I believe, it is the second element down when looking at the stuff inside the barrel. Looks like very thin fabric, maybe titanium. In my case, there was an obvious curve showing, like the thin material was unable to slide under the edge and bent upwards like a sheet of paper. After much head-scratching, I decided to reach under the first lens element with a small tool, and gently persuade the material to flatten out. I also pressed it ever so slightly around the edge. After reassembly, it seems to work, no more stuck shutter. There was no oil issue, as is commonly reported. My shutter looked like it failed to retract properly, and bent upwards instead. A little light fiddling put it back in order.

Great video! My camera could no longer take clear pictures. I thought I might have caused a misalignment with the focus mechanism. After more than a year I finally disassembled the camera following this video. Turns out I had a buckled (deformed) shutter that could no longer close 100%. Probably from unfiltered photos of the sun... Oops. I order a new lens assembly and I now have a fully functional SX50. :) Thank you Jay!

Thank you so much for this instructive video, it was really helpful. My lens was stucked and I disassembled the camera following this video. I couldn´t find anything odd and I re-assembled it again. After that my camera started up but the lens was still stucked. I desided to give it another try. Unfortenately I rushed the process and forgott to discharge the capacitor. When I got to the lens part a very small plastic steering pin felled out of the camera. I guess this was the failing part of the lens error? But when I re-assembled the camera it was dead. I wonder if I should buy a new main-PCB and try it again? Or maybe other parts have been damaged to?? Anyway, this video was really helpful !!

The zoom has stopped moving out, the stop starts moving out further, when trying to push the lens further, it gives a "lens error". Is it worth trying to fix the problem yourself using your video? Or am I guaranteed to break?
Disassembled successfully. But a small pin fell out of the lens. I don't understand where he was standing. Without him, everything began to move normally. I'll try to assemble the camera...
I did it! It worked! Thank you very much! I've been doing it for half a day. What kind of pin it was, I never understood

Excellent video! You wouldn't happen to know where the internal battery that saves the date & time is located in there, would you?

    • @WilliamFrawley
      @WilliamFrawley  8 місяців тому

I don't think there is an internal battery. I think there is a capacitor that gets charged from the main battery. If the battery is dead or removed for a length of time, then the capacitor loses its charge and you have to reset the date and time.

Hi jay, i' ve repaired my sx50, it has a stuck shutter. While reinstalling the motherboard and connect the ribbon cables i figured there is a missing latch at 10:50. The ribbon cable will go in but i can't lock it as it should be. I have try to fix it with tape but i think this is not the right way to hold. The camera takes good pictures but outside they are all overexposed. So i think it is the ribbon cable which also adjust the aperture. When the camera is set to film everything goes fine. can you tell me what to do. Thanks in advance.

At 6:25, when removing screw for top cover plate, you forgot to mention there is another screw on the back. After the back cover is removed, around 5:21, your video shows the screw already missing. I assume you had this camera apart and together again while making the video. Top right on the back side, there is another screw that holds the top right side cover piece on. It is revealed after the back comes off.

I had a bug (earwig) between the front lens and the zoom lens. Following your video I was able to take the camera apart and get to the lenses and remove the insect. Two problems remain though.
Fluid from the insect seems to have ruined the lens covering. I look clean enough, but I wonder if that could have
influence on the pictures taken?Unfortunately I didn’t understand have to lift off the connector on the main board from the LCD so I ended up with a connector in two pieces (metal and plastic) and could not put that together again.
I wonder if I can buy and mount another connector or a new cable without having to buy a new LCD unit with cable and connector.

    • @jzingler
      @jzingler 7 років тому

To be honest I’m very disappointed with the Canon service. When I found the bug in my camera I called the Canon representatives in DK and explained the problem. They could not help but referred to a service center they use.
Here I again told what was wrong but they could only offer to take it in for repair (eventually send it off to an off score repair center) would cost around halve the price of a new camera.
Now following your video I learned that by removing the front of the camera I could get to the lens and in fact have removed the bug on the spot - but none of the Canon people suggested that fix!

+Jay Gould The display is lit only can not give up on it. but if I close the image viewer is. the other is that the back does not respond to the buttons, and all cables from the site. Twice I took it apart.

+milszab Did you completely discharge the capacitor? If it's not completely discharged then it's possible to damage the main board during disassembly / reassembly. Other than a ribbon cable not hooked up, that is the only thing I can think of.
