Kevyn Aucoin is the one who invented this back in the 90s and Scott took it and made it famous. Sorry to say, Mary just steal all the glory and took all the credit without tagging the right legend
Scott Barnes never tagged Kevyn Aucoin either. And Mary was seen in videos on UA-cam doing this technique at the same time Scott was on UA-cam doing it. None of them gave Kevyn Aucoin the recognition for it.
I feel like underpainting also makes it easier to work with cream products, like you don't have to worry about over-applying because you can soften everything after! The end makeup really looks stunning!
I've been underpainting for a few months now although I also add cream highlighter and finish with powder highlighter at the end after the powder layer goes on. The cool part is that you can underpaint with powder foundation too!! I love this technique with every kind of foundation they make.
I love under painting, it always looks smoother and more natural in a flawless way… I do it more in a way of applying just a lighter coverage foundation and not too much of it and if I have a point to cover I jus apply the concealer under it all
I remember Samantha Ravndahl brought this technique into my life back in like 2018. Changed my life forever and I couldn’t believe everyone wasn’t using it lol
This whole look is stunning on you ❤ I so wanna try this method one day so I am going to save this video for later to try ! Thank you for always inspiring us and teaching us ❤❤
You're using less foundation, sure, but you're also using a lot more contour to get it to show up at the same intensity as it would if you just put it on top of the foundation, so I don't feel like you're really saving product overall
I feel like I've been doing a version of underpainting for years! It's weird to see it going around right now as a viral technique. I love it because I feel like I put on less makeup overall.
I wish an experienced painter would make a video addressing this, but since no one has stepped forward, a snarky comment will have to do. As a traditional painter who is also a pro makeup artist for 25 years, this new push to categorize highlighting, contouring and blush under foundation as "underpainting" is like nails on a chalk board because although highlighting and contouring (in any order) in makeup application share some similarities with the concept of underpainting in art--- in the sense that both involve layering and creating depth---they are totally different techniques used in totally different contexts. Let me clarify: With highlighting and contouring in makeup (in any order, above or below foundation), we are enhancing the three-dimensional appearance of the face with products that are lighter and darker than the natural skin tone to create the illusion of depth, emphasize features, and reshape the contours of the face. Basically, the goal is to sculpt the face by placing light and shadow to get the desired look. "Underpainting," on the other hand, specifically refers to a painting technique in traditional visual arts where first layer of paint applied is used to establish values, colors, and composition before adding more detailed layers. Both highlighting and contouring and underpainting do involve layering for the purpose of creating depth and enhancing features, but they really are very different techniques used in very different ways in very different fields. From the traditional artistry perspective, the co-opting of this term has been wild to watch.
I haven’t tried the entire face that way, but I have definitely done it with blush, especially a darker color, and it is really pretty. The thing with cream products that always gets me is that I end up going over my bronzer, blush, and highlight with the corresponding powder products leading me to ask myself whether or not it makes sense for me (time wise) to duplicate each step. I find I use my powders so much more because of that. Your look is gorgeous, but you have a beautiful canvas so I always think you look gorgeous regardless of technique!
Absolutely one of my favorite videos you've done!! This has been a game changer in the way I've been doing my makeup the last few months. Had to come back for a re-watch!
This looked good on you. I know Scott Barnes method is under painting as well. I have done this on my fair skin and I think it looks good on pale skin.
I just saw your UA-cam video on underpainting. I can’t find the Benefit Hoola Glow bronzer anywhere. Is there something else you could recommend?? I appreciate it! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm dumbfounded why Mary Phillips gets the credit for this. It has been around for years. Personally I have seen Nina Uhbi do this for 6 years! on her yt channel. And who don't remember Scott Barnes do this on Tatis channel in 2019.
I first saw this technique used a few years ago by Lilit Caradanian (who used to be a make-up artist and mostly did bridal make-up. She now has her own makeup brand and does other things) and I LOVED the technique and the effect... However, never actually attempted to do it as I never have the time to achieve the look lol🤣 It's usually a quick makeup for me and I'm out the door😁🙈
Hey Allana, this looks really good indeed 😊 could you tell us which brushes you’re using ? I noticed you said the Rephr 04 and a real technics one, but I’m curious about the small blending brushes !
I love this technique!! And the way you featured it was great, thank you Allana. After watching this video I tried it, what a pretty result! Oh and I almost forgot, I ended up rearranging my cream and powder face products drawer for this application 😅😅😅😅 yep I'm that weirdo.
Love this video! You look beautiful and your take on this technique really inspired me to try something new which is so refreshing. Your humor is uplifting and I just felt like saying you were the very first person I ever subscribed to here on UA-cam many a year ago, aka special.
How do you underpaint if you have acne marks? I find it hard to bronze before conceal my marks as it makes it darker. And then if you conceal that - it highlights it

No you’re totally right this is gorgeous makeup
I feel like Scott Barnes made underpainting a thing way before anyone else did! Everyone’s got their own spin on it now, so stunning 🤩
Kevyn Aucoin was really known for this in the 90s this technique really dates back to the 70s.
@@karenmariewagstaff5746 Kevyn Aucoin inspired so many artists but not all of them admit it.
Kevyn Aucoin and Scott Barnes popularized it. Mary Phillips taking credit for this is weird because she didn’t do anything new.
@@karenmariewagstaff5746 yes! Exactly!
It was Kevyn and scott barnes then I guess mary philips takes the credit
This makes me want to get all of my makeup out and play along!! The final look is GORGEOUS!
Love this look! I was thinking Kevyn Aucoin started this under painting technique in like the 90’s. Love #EveryDayMay ♥️♥️♥️
Looks beautiful! ❤ and I just have to say your skin itself is looking even more beautiful than normal!
Looks AMAZING! I definitely felt the same. It felt so wrong doing it, but turned out so seamless and light!
I've been underpainting for a few months now although I also add cream highlighter and finish with powder highlighter at the end after the powder layer goes on.
The cool part is that you can underpaint with powder foundation too!! I love this technique with every kind of foundation they make.
It actually makes the contours and highlights look natural ♡
Wowza. Stunning. I love how the makeup looks so flawless. Thank you. ❤❤❤
Your makeup always turns out so flawless!!!❤❤❤ gorgeous!
Favorite look you ever did ⚡️

Gorgeous!
this is my favorite look you’ve done😍😍😍
Samantha R did a video on this like 4 years ago. I’m surprised you never tried underpainting sooner
you look incredible 😍 love this technique!
Wow, stunning! You should definitely keep doing this makup application! ❤
Allana, can you please share how you did this amazing sleeked ponytail? 🙏🏼🧡
This is stunning. Have to try immediately 🤩
Lookin flawless
I believe Scott Barnes is the originator of this technique!
Yes, he taught Tati how to do this years ago. He uses this on Jennifer Lopez alot.
@@jessicaolson2757 I think it was actually Kevyn Aucoin who started it 🤷🏻♀️
He did this on Tati’s channel like 4 years ago…
Kevyn Aucoin started doing this in the 90’s
Drag queens are the creators of this technique.
This came out so nice!
So pretty!! I must try.

Absolutely stunning ❤

Wow! That application really makes makeup look flawless!
Looks amazing! Another terrific video.
Allana, can you please recreate Gigi Hadid’s MET Gala makeup look? 🩶
This looks amazing ❤!!!!!!!!!!!
Allana, can you please recreate Nicola Peltz wedding makeup look? Please 🤍
Love the final look. The whole time I was like “blend your contour under your lip!” 😂 ❤
Yes!!!!! 😂
You're using less foundation, sure, but you're also using a lot more contour to get it to show up at the same intensity as it would if you just put it on top of the foundation, so I don't feel like you're really saving product overall
So stunning!!! Even before you started putting anything on, you looked beautiful. Loved how this turned out! 💕
Wait, are we repeting the same mistake and not blending the lip contour?? 😅😅 hilarius, xoxo
YUP 😂😂😂😂
I feel like I've been doing a version of underpainting for years! It's weird to see it going around right now as a viral technique. I love it because I feel like I put on less makeup overall.
LoveIt!!!
That turned out beautiful
Maybe would be perfect for date night 😉 will be trying
Looks gorgeous ❤
It is beautiful! I think I'll try it out 👍🏼
Samantha Ravndahl did this a few years back
So so pretty ❤️

GIRL, get on the Phytosurgence train. Verdant Forcefield is the best under makeup moisturizer you'll ever need.
I always notice my makeup looks so much better when I take some extra time to do this. This would be beautiful wedding makeup for you!!
Aren’t we getting close to Picante time?! 😍 You make me want to try this and I rarely wear bronzer and contour 😉
Wow. Amazing! How did you do the eyes? Did I miss that? Looks like some product on the eyelids
Stunning!! Your earrings are also gorgeous 😍. Would you do a post on your earring stack?
Allana was there anything on your eyes here? My eyes do not have this much dimension and I would really like to enhance them in a similar natural way.
Absolutely one of my favorite videos you've done!! This has been a game changer in the way I've been doing my makeup the last few months. Had to come back for a re-watch!
BLEND, BLEND…your lip contour. I was cringing 😬😂 Love the technique! The look is demure. I must try!

Thumb up to METGALA 2023 CARA DELAVIGNE makeup look 😻😻😻

❤❤❤❤
Scott Barnes technique
I love it, though it's nothing new, I did my bridal makeup 9 years ago with this same technique, following the steps of the great @WayneGoss
I’m always excited about May because of you❤❤
What eyeshadow are you wearing?
I would love to know all of your must have brushes. I need to replace a bunch of mine. Especially face brushes
Does this look last long during the day to day?
Does underpainting work for oily skin? And lasts all day?
This way aren't you using more of all of the products? Other than foundation.
This is not a 5min make up routine. This’ll be more applicable for a more special occasion or when you have more than 5mins to do your make up. 😊
I think this is your best base ever!!!
I thought Scott Barnes started the underpainting, Tati made a video with him were he shares how he does it on JLO
Beautiful, what's on your eyes?
Putting contour around my lips always makes me look like I have a moustache 😅
Any makeup look or technique would look good on you because you have a gorgeous face 😊 luck you
I love this technique. What is that jaw line? So sharp you could cut yourself on it 💅
Where if your bronzer sculpting brush from? Neeeed!
I love your glowing cheekbones!!
It looks perfection on you I wouldn't even try it on me lol
It looks great but i would love to see those Makeup-looks in natural light afterwards
I have never been this early ❤❤😂

Looks great - What did you put on your eyelids? and when?
This makeup looks so flawless and perfectly diffused I'm amazed I need to try this out asap
Dying that you mention not to forget blending the mouth contour and 5 seconds later do not blend it out 😂❤
I love this technique!! And the way you featured it was great, thank you Allana. After watching this video I tried it, what a pretty result!

The new work Is beautiful...but i still use the dust when i go to work...i have just 10 minutes for my make up....i have also cream....❤
Underpainting is a big part of queer drag culture! 🖤
Ok I’m convinced I’m trying this again! I never saw ppl use powder afterwards and I feel like I was missing that last time
What did you put on your eyelids? did I totally miss that part??
S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G your skin looks phenomenal!!!! Really loved this technique on you!!!!
Allana: YOU look stunning with this method. Rather than "your makeup looks good".

I wonder how it would or if it would withstand in the heat and humidity
Stunning
