- I wanted to show a new technique that I tried over the weekend with my makeup! Mary Phillips posted a video on TikTik on how she likes to do her complexion with a technique called “underpainting”, where you create the structure of the face first with contour & concealer and then apply foundation on top! Allie!!! You know what would be so cool to do as a video? I recently finished your declutter series and it would be so awesome if you did like a challenge video: Randomly choose an alphabet letter and use that to pick a product to use in your makeup routine (based on brand). For example: you chose the letter C, so the first step is primer, you need to use a primer that the brand starts with C.
Or you can pick color and the color chosen has to be the product package color!
That is a unique idea👍🏻I think it would be fun also🥰

Funny to see Kevin Aucoins techniques coming back 22 years after I learned them 🤣🤣 He was one of the most inspiring MUA back then and for me he still is such an icon when it comes to makeup techniques 😍😍

Exactly LOL. It sort of bugs me someone else getting all the credit...but oh well. I would say that his books are makeup bibles and for everyone who wants to really learn makeup they are must-reads!

Scott Barnes’ version (going in with heavier product) is beautiful and works best on film, under heavy lighting which he mentioned in his video with Tati I do believe - this is beautiful but is more wearable for everyday!

I started doing under painting with my makeup when I saw Tati and Scott on her channel! Whether it’s a light application or full face. It’s my favourite way to apply makeup ☺️
Allie, you won my heart when you pulled out that MAC single eyeshadow in Omega. No one talks about MAC singles anymore. Omega is a long time favorite of mine! I'm on my third one, with one as a backup. Can't live without it!
Yeah I’m my bridal work I would under paint all of my brides cause with all of the photos it just made them look so much more sculpted and natural. I have been using this technique daily for myself as well cause it’s a bit faster for me.
As someone already said, Kevyn Aucoin underpainted contour, as have drag artists for decades. Mary Phillips has mentioned Kevyn's technique as an inspiration.

Love the technique. Been doing it for years the way you did it today. Learned it from Scott Barnes but turned the amount of make up down immensely!! 😂 I wanted to go to the office , not the catwalk, after all! 😂😂😂

I just started doing this like last week! I was pleasantly surprised how subtle and blended it looked. It felt so blocky and extreme during application but I trusted the process and was mildly impressed.

Your makeup looks beautiful as always. I might have to try this technique as it looks very natural. I have learned the technique of “using the sponge to pick up the excess make up” from you sometime ago and it really does help smooth things out (no more brush strokes for me). Thank you Allie!

You are right, it's quite good. I might try this technique just to make my contour last, because I really need it and setting spray is not enough as it disappears really fast.

I have been trying this method. I like the final results and I feel it looks natural. I look like my face is naturally sculpted. Love it when you show different techniques. It came out beautifully ‼️

Loved that you made a video about it!! I tried it but personally for me it doesn’t add much. I rather use foundation and concealer first en then use a bronzer, it looks more healthy and defined on me

Under painting is a technique that Kevyn Aucoin created and Scott Barnes made popular. Tati has also been using that technique for awhile now.

This isn't underpainting. it's contour, highlighting and color before foundation. Actual underpainting has been a technique used by artists for centuries, and it has been a part of various artistic traditions throughout history during the Renaissance and Baroque periods and was popularized by artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Titian. It's outrageous that the modern makeup community has recently co-opted this term, and also, the late great Kevin Aucoin didn't really call it that either. Using this term is relatively newly added to the community lexicon because this generation is unimaginative and loves to recycle and appropriate terms already in use. Let me clarify:
With highlighting and contouring in makeup (in any order, above or below foundation), we are enhancing the three-dimensional appearance of the face with products that are lighter and darker than the natural skin tone to create the illusion of depth, emphasize features, and reshape the contours of the face. Basically, the goal is to sculpt the face by placing light and shadow to get the desired look.
"Underpainting," on the other hand, specifically refers to a painting technique in traditional visual arts where first layer of paint applied is used to establish values, colors, and composition before adding more detailed layers. Both highlighting and contouring and underpainting do involve layering for the purpose of creating depth and enhancing features, but they really are very different techniques used in very different ways in very different fields. From the traditional artistry perspective, the co-opting of this term has been wild to watch.

I was waiting for that thumbnail shot to happen. 😅 Makes sense to structure this way and it does look beautifully blended with the tinted foundation buffed over top. I just ordered the Nars concealer today so that is fun. And the Rare Beauty mascara is my current favorite. I don't have any RCMA highlight and that looks intriguing. The highlighters I have seen so far seem so shimmery! So this is new to me to see a less shimmery product blend of highlight/concealer. Hmnmn... It's like angel wings across your face at that step. Wouldn't it be interesting to see this same process but instead using yours Nars foundation? Would that be too much coverage or not? Anyway - fun to see a new technique. Happy Birthday! 🥳

I love seeing you try out different techniques, inspires me to try something new too! Since having my baby I haven’t worn Foundation in months. I rely on concealer for my coverage and just spot conceal wherever I need. Recently I’ve been applying with a fluffy brush and lightly blending it all over the face so it seemlessly blends in everywhere. So it’s similar to this underpainting technique, minus the foundation
Oh yes I’m going to try this tomorrow and I think this will help me hide all the broken capillaries on my cheeks

This actually looks pretty good! I use powder contour, but I might try to get a cream product in the summer when maintaining a matte face is quite a challenge. I should try something glowy 😆
