Cape Rail: Why Cape Cod, MA needs alternative transportation - RI Bridge closure
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Recently Providence, RI had a bridge closure that paralyzed the 195 west corridor into the city. This video compares that major traffic issue to Cape Cod's canal bridges if they were to suffer a similar closure. If either the Bourne or Sagamore closed unexpectedly then we would need alternative modes of transportation like rail to keep people moving and the economy going on Cape Cod, MA.

We have similar issues in the UK. If you don't run trains, no one can use them. If they run they get used.
Thank you for all your videos, have a wonderful Christmas.🙃
Thanks for watching!
It’s starting again. The US has a completely different starting point than most of Europe, but it is making very decent progress, all else considered.
It astounds me that people don't understand what kind of damage that the pollution from trucks does to our atmosphere. If I could get from CT to the Cape by train, I would do it!! That bridge in Providence is going to create a huge problem for many months.
Thanks for watching!
Hubs and I watch most of them!!@@SouthCoastRailVideos
I really appreciate you bringing people to understand these issues. Seeing what’s happening in Providence brings a whole new light to this. The MBTA really should run service to Hyannis and reopen Woods Hole. Thanks for the video.

I know this is off topic, but it would be extremely difficult to run a rail service from East Providence to Providence since the bascule bridge is locked open and the ROW on the east providence side was redeveloped into a new road and condos. The worst of all was the demolition of the old Providence Union Station platforms and rail infrastructure, along with building the new station further away from downtown across the river in a smaller building limiting future expansion of services along the NEC. This goes to show the importance of maintaining your rail infrastructure for the future since that connection to east providence could have been used to improve access to East Providence during this time and create transit oriented development along the river instead of what is being built now.

Absolutely! Couldn’t agree more! Merry Christmas man!

Surprisingly good report! Good job!

One tractor trailer does 9,600 times the amount of damage that is done by a car! Even a large bus does the damage of thousands of cars, though not like a fully loaded semi. Trains make zero potholes or cracks in the roads. Rail cars can also carry two or three times what a semi can.

David I am glad that you put this video together. I guess you heard by now. Starting in a couple of weeks road construction is scheduled to begin for the new Cape Cod canal Sagamore bridge. This will start with the demolition of the old Christmas Tree Shop at the Cape side of the base of the Sagamore bridge. The Sagamore bridge is not safe and currently has very straight weight limit with a two axle limit. The Sagamore bridge has been reduced to one lane for an during emergency inspection. Also last summer during the peak tourist time the bridge had to be closed at night for an Emergency structualle repair. The repair took six weeks to complete. It is just a matter of time before the Sagamore bridge will have to be closed indefinitely or face catastrophic failure. Please support Jack Kennedy and his efforts to restore full rail service to the Cape.
Wow! That got started fast. I didn’t realize the Sagamore bridge was in such tough shape. I thought state rep. Dylan Fernandes was leading the charge to restore rail service to the Cape?
This comment is full of inaccurate information.
@@SouthCoastRailVideos Thanks! Couldn’t figure some of it out.
Awesome

I completely agree! In South Miami Dade County, a valuable rail corridor was removed (FEC). Part of the corridor was replaced by a busway that has failed to live up to expectations. The other part of the corridor was promised to be turned into a trail but instead turned out to be a real estate development project and not even a trail is possible over the central segment now. This leaves only the streets for transportation. More railroads and less highways is an answer to the pollution problem. Leftist politicians claim to be for the environment but their actions prove that they are vehemently anti rail.
Facts!

I think it would be a great idea to make the train go to the cape year round in the future so that way there will be less traffic
I totally agree!
There was an interview in last Fridays Falmouth Enterprise with state rep. Dylan Fernandes who is pursuing getting commuter rail to the Cape. The interviewer kept circling back to the question if this meant the Falmouth secondary would not be torn up for a bike path. And it was like, Duh! The only thing that bothered me was Dylan would not answer the question straight on, only replying that this wasn’t about that.
I think he’s trying to stay impartial until a study is completed to see if it is possible.
I agree. I’m sure he’s trying to stay away from that muck hole. There’s no sense getting into an argument with the bikeways people. Just keep the Falmouth secondary’s rails shined up with freight for now. The Enterprise has always been a pro-bike path newspaper who I’m sure they’re just trying to stir up a debate.
You guys are getting all worked up about bridge closings. Why? I got my Cape Cod Tunnel permit sticker a few years ago so I am all set. Just need to find out where it is now…😎
God if we had adequate rail service to the Cape traffic over the Bourne and Sagamore wouldn't be total nightmares.
I heard Bay Colony was going to operate shuttles over the train bridge during the new Cape Cod bridge construction.
I thought Bay Colony was kaput.
Jerry, that was a satire comment but would’ve been cool!
@@SouthCoastRailVideos oh, I’m falling for these left and right!😂
More people need to learn about the tunnel to the Cape!
Haha Thanks for watching!
How old is the rail bridge? Seeing as it is the only rail connection to the Cape, maybe we need to start planning for its replacement or even expansion as well ...
The bridge was finished in 1935 but is in arguably better shape than the road bridges. About 20 years ago it had a major rehabilitation done that included cables, motors/mechanisms, among other things. I don’t know if it needs anything else today but I don’t think it is necessary to replace it anytime soon.
38 million was put into it 20 or so years ago.
They never should have scrapped the line to Provincetown.
They shouldn’t have torn out any lines anywhere. Put the bike trails alongside.
Thanks for watching!
It’s just a matter of time before the Cape is in the same position as Providence.
Thanks for watching!
Please bring back more trains to the Cape Cod.😊

Easy. Don't go to Cape Cod until the bridges are replaced. Once you get off the train, you're gonna be satuck wqithin a mile or so of the train station. Overpriced stuff anyway.
