Such as shame a classic killed by a battery failure - so glad we use standardised cr 2031 batteries now ;)

Yes, it’s a real shame! Sadly the same fate happened to an LC III and a Macintosh TV. Both occurred before they were in my hands. But it was a wake up call to remove all old batteries from my systems!

It is fixable. You would need to clean the inside of the battery leakage (can do it with a toothbrush) and then get a new battery. It would be a relatively simple repair, as long as that was the only thing wrong with it. (That has got to be one of the cleanest classic Mac cases I’ve seen in awhile)

Unfortunately the ROMs took a beating and I think one of the legs fell off as well. The PDS slot area is worse I'm afraid, and is just a mess! I will try to fix it up eventually, but I'll need to be very careful. It may not be worth the trouble, but I am curious!

I used to print out a lot of Worksheets, Puzzles, and games on my LC-II I had when I was teaching in the '90s. I also had an image writer printer as well as a decent Monitor.

Maybe you can find a bad board with a good ROM and PDS slot and and do a mix and match maybe clean the bad motherboard

The biggest factor to sales was probably the fact you could buy one at the college bookstore and Apple would finance it. I could build my own PC so I didn't use it but I got one using my student status for my mom and she made the payments. It had a great monitor and was half decent. Never upgraded beyond stock, so more RAM would have helped. I used it for internet access when I was home.

We had a Performa 637 that came with that modem and I can personally attest to the fact that it was garbage. We replaced it with another modem, can't remember what kind it was just that it used a stainless steel housing and had a two digit display for status codes, and never had another problem. For a packed in add-on it was terrible.

Do apple imac g3 computers have batteries in them?

    • @Mac84

Yes, all of them do. The service manual shows you where they are, they differ on the tray load or slot load / DV models.

Thank you for the response. I am not too knowledgeable about newer machines, but I know a lot of others out there who are. I hope your Mac continues to work well for years to come!

God I hated Apple when they put out garbage like this. This was a dark time.... Apple was absolute trash when Steve Jobs wasn’t there. I (reluctantly at first, I was a PC guy) worked at “Apple Computer” in the early 2000’s in Elk Grove California. I started in AppleCare then worked on the assembly line as a failure analysis engineer for PowerMac’s. That facility use to pump out iMac’s until one caught on fire on the line and lit every station on fire as it went down the line, LOL so that building was changed to house cubicles for AppleCare and the next building was changed to make only Power Macintoshes, the iMac’s were then made in Mexico, then China. What made me start to like Apple was when I saw OSX, I HATED OS9, no protected memory, no multitasking, archaic GUI (though now I kinda dig it for nostalgia reasons, my school district was all Mac), OSX was still pretty much beta but it was pretty amazing but for hardware I was in awe when I saw the G4 Cube... that did it for me. I still have the G4 Cube I built while I was there in its box, I need to set it up, or do an unboxing video like you! Hmmmm...
I miss working at Apple but it’s changed a lot, the whole phone revolution.. they’re not really a computer company anymore, well, not like they use to be. But I really liked working with the people there. I worked in San Jose at IBM and those people were very cold. If you weren’t a millionaire then they ignored you, treated you like furniture or “the help”. Then I worked at Intel in Folsom... talk about stuck up a-holes. But Apple was special... good people, I really liked them and back then I grew to like the company and Macs a lot.
My daily drivers today are a Mac Pro 5,1 upgraded to the max dual booting macOS Mojave and Windows 10 and a ThinkPad dual booting Windows 10 and Hackintosh’ed macOS Mojave. 😎🤘

Frank, thank you for the wonderfully detailed comment! Yes, this era was a very weird time for Apple. Thank you so much for sharing details from your time at Apple. Those poor iMacs! It would be super-cool to see an unboxing video of a G4 Cube, you should totally do that!
I'd be interested to know more about your time at Apple, and your thoughts on vintage and new machines, if you'd like to chat more, please send me an email at mac84tv@gmail.com :) Take care!

Current Apple computers are frankly not worth it anymore too. I have a 2016 13' MBP, the last one that was somewhat upgradable. My previous 17' 2011 MBP was pretty decent and was very upgradable despite having to fix it because of the GPU frying.
Current ones outside the Mac Pros are simply too underpowered for most serious tasks, and the price of the Mac Pros just to get that performance is not worth it - my 5k iMac at work struggles even with 1080p video editing for example. Same with 3D renders, this is delegated to my custom built PC now - 15 minutes to render something on my work iMac takes less than a minute on the PC.
I do have a soft spot for the older macs, particularly the iMac G3 and the early iBooks. Currently have a G3 Snow CV SE and previously had a G4 tower which I had maxed out (which sadly had to go :( ). If I have the room I'll start collecting more again.

We’ve both done similar repairs, the traces and vias are too far damaged to make it worth it.

Ah those Apple Performa 30 minute Apple Family, as I still them on You Tube. Hey I still have not one but 2 Apple PowerBooks Pismo, and still Working, Thank you. The formal owner of this Performa should be given a Virus like Measles, that is the latest sickness of the month.

you lost me at LCD and pissed me off at SD card

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  5 років тому +3

As I mentioned in the video I used the LCD purely for the convenience of filming with my phone without the distortion of a CRT.
The SCSI2SD adapter was used because the original HD was dead. I was going to use a Conner 40MB hard drive instead (which you can probably see in some shots) but that croaked during filming.

The SD card I can understand but who cares about a little flicker. Better than insulting my eyes with an LCD
