It was a serious missed opportunity for Nintendo to give the playable characters in Smash Bros Ultimate alternate costumes based on how they originally looked liked in past games.

I really am disappointed in this too. They could easily produce costumes and skins to sell, but they just refuse to invest in maintaining their games

Nintendo isn't about legacy, they're about the future. Thats why they don't usually do remakes and they have a strong stance on emulation for older out of print games. Having old school skins would go against this mindset. Its something I've noticed with a lot of major Japanese gaming companies, they like to reinvent they characters and move forward while not looking back. Zelda rarely connects despite what the fans try do with the timeline, Final Fantasy has unique worlds for each entry, and Japanese fighting games always toss out half their roster (Street Fighter 3, Soul Calibur 5, etc). Its a different view to gaming history, where the west appreciates legacy while the east seems to do a reset every time a new "era" happens. Like how many times have they rebooted Godzilla? Japan is the king of redoing things. Having older skins could be seen as a disrespect to current developers as it flirts with the idea that older versions of a character are better then modern ones.

They pitched Mario's voice probably due to low cartridge space during the development of Mario party or just laziness for a new voice..
