Right at the end, it was just a sudden gust of gravity.
😂😂😂 gust of gravity . 😀😀
The trubble is when the wind STOPs gusting.
@@erickborling1302 👍🏻😂😂😂 .
Gust of gravity and "the problem was that the wind stopped gusting" are the nicer and most funniest excuses people can use to justify a bad landing.😀😀😀
@@sanpol4399 Do they have airspeed indicators? Airspeed is key. The pilot's excuses have more than humor value. The pilot shows their depth of knowledge or lack thereof when providing the incorrect explanation. Fact is they were pretty much always too fast or or too slow or not in directional control.
@@erickborling1302 You are 100% wright. I agree with you.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Of course I am on the humor side here.
I am on aviation for the last 30 years. Long part of that on the great 737 family. We know exactly when someone is using an excuse for some mistake or if the situation was really tricky. 🙂
So, when the landing is not exactly as smooth as we want, the gust of gravity and " I was going to make a perfect landing, but on short final the wind stoped gusting ,turned into calm wind and ruined my planning" , will be my humor jokes from now on to justify some obvious mistakes that my colleague in my side know I surely did, or to comfort my colleague ,in the case the not so smooth landing was done by him. 😀
I used for the first time that " gust of gravity" excuse ,two days ago , at the radio model club , to justify bad landings from the airmodels people made, and all of them laugh a lot when I told about the " gust of gravity" to justify bad landings everyone knew was done only by rc pilot mistake, on that perfect and still air day.
😀😀😀
That doesn't qualify as a crash. I doubt he popped a sprog! I've fallen harden than that coming out of a bar on a Friday night.
(What's a "sprog"?)
Maybe you shouldn't drink so much. =)
Sadly I'm reading this on A Friday night
and the 6 other nights too
@@azmike3572 the wing tip rod that helps recover from steep dives
I once landed at an abandoned drive-in movie site, landed into the wind like your supposed to, but didn't notice the gentle slope towards where the movie screen was and ground effect, so I glided about 2 feet off the ground for 200 yards into some bushes and a fence.
Gotta love that hardware-assisted braking!
Gravity: not just a good idea but the law!
Where's gravity when you really need it?! :-)
😂🤣
Came in clutch at the end there
At the end.
underrated comment ! 😁🤣🤣
Close to stall speed at high angle of attack you may get wing tip stall due to billow shift, causing the glider to turn to the opposite side of the pilot's input. So you see him clearly turning left while the glider goes right. Below a certain speed you can't turn a high performance glider anymore, you go straight, stay in the middle and flare.
That looks like a learning experience. Glad the pilot made it. Hang glider parts can be replaced.
any landing you can walk away from is a good landing
not just good, but good enough
Well said, Chuck
Any landing you can fly the plane again afterwards is a GREAT landing!
@@My_Fair_Lady AS SOMEONE WHO HAS HAD A LANDING, AND NOT WALKED AWAY FROM IT, I CAN CONFIRM, A GOOD LANDING IS ONE YOU WALK AWAY FROM, WITH NO PAIN ( caps lock works both ways, try it someday )
@@My_Fair_Lady you crashed lol xD. I've had about two hundred flights till date and never had to be carried. Go on, keep preaching! Lol
ive been watching a lot of HG videos and reading some books trying to get me some knowledge before i sign up for a lesson and really appreciate when people are posting this kind of video to hopefully minimize the mistakes that a newbie will be making, like me. Thanks
Did you learn it? I started the same way: videos, forums, sites, books then practice
интересно что с тобой сейчас
those gliders like to fly a lot , specially downhill. :-)
hahahahaha...I could feel your desperation! You were probably thinking "Damn performance wing". It could be worse for sure!
He needs a little more training if he's going to take that into combat, like the wing says it's made for.
K
wow. hang-glider trooper. is that even a thing ?? :O
@@kanrup5199 Get hang gliders with sling wings so you can go faster into battle.
downwind downhill? Nice :)
0:52 he's thinking "this will be easy"
0:57 "oh shit"
High performance glider & inexperienced pilot. Especially tough on a hot day with thermals popping off in front of you.
In Crestline in the 1980's we had a word for that...
"Bye!"
Other pilots would wave and yell Bye as you floated over them.
thanks youtube for recommending after 13 years
Thanks for having the balls to put yourself out there. I wish I had started hang gliding back in the 60's when we were trying to figure out how to jump off our rooftops!
King size sheet with kite strings.
Great landing. He looks like there was a lot of strong thermal activity near the ground that kept increasing his altitude each time he was ready to descend into the LZ. Eventually, he ran out of runway, and maybe panicked a little.
Good job
Great landing????
lol he was doing so well! i am taking my first course this spring after watching my father fly for years.. excited!
How are you doing? :)
Update?
If all went well, you are now a veteran.
Any landing you can walk away from is a good one :)
Orange Kayak with limitations....
Maybe during WWI
no it's not
and any landing where you walk away and no damage was caused is a great one.
Dumbest saying in all of aviation.
I thought someone died or something. Chill out, guys.
any landing you walk away from is a good one; if you can reuse the equipment it was excellent! This was an excellent landing!!
Why youtube? Why i have this in my recomendations 13 years after video release?
Tailwind landing? I'm trying to learn as much as I can before taking lessons. Thanks for posting this, now I know exactly what I'll be doing. Except maybe worse...
Does he have restless leg syndrome!?
+lulem400 I have that too in my middle leg.
Great question! 😄😆
Lol, five years later
When starting my lessons, I was told that crossing the street or riding a horse is more dangerous than this amazing sport. And really, the deaths are mainly sourced from aerobatic pilots, or unfortunentally pilots that have never obtained any hours of training.
Or unskilled pilots flying topless gliders and screwing up landings
lmaoni love how thr cameraman just stands there continuing to film after the hanglider faceplanta and crashes
I agree as a pilot I've seen alot of good launches and landings. I did not get the impression that this pilot was handling this wing very well. It's better to outgrow your wing than to step up too soon.
How did i get here from boat outboards??
First off, you forgot to lower your landing gear. Oh wait. Now I see.
He walked away from a less than elegant landing. No problem.
"Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing." This landing was a bit abrupt, but, if you've actually watched hang gliders land & T/O very much, you see this kind of landing more often than smooth ones. Gusts, the slow response to "control inputs" & the primitive means of control all make it tough to look good all the time.
looks like a little slope lift kept him up longer than he anticipated?
how much do these gliders cost ? and do you need a permit for it or anything ?
When I become President all hang glider stores must show videos like this.
The landing that just kept on giving. I'm sure we've all had our fair share of those.
So close to a near perfect landing, then suddenly, DOOOOOHHH!!!
Is this Cool or Coloma, Ca? Looks very similar.
It's a super talent even flying straight with that model of Combat 😅
looks really fun!
Ouch. Well, coulda been worse. Looks to me like he was hanging on the edge of a stall and hanging on the right side of the bar, maybe to avoid the gravity bush there, then when the glider didn’t respond, for some reason he centered the bar again but then the near-stalled glider dropped the right wing and he pretty much was a passenger by then.
This is why I quickly have up hang gliding. Didn't have enough time to fly. That landing can turn bad quick and you can't go around.
O' course, I did make a bunch of skydives and now ride a motorcycle. But I sure saw the lure of hang gliding during my few short flights.
I would never ride the downtubes that high. Fly it to the ground, then before flair go to the downtubes. - former HGA instructor.
@James Cricket - They are tubes that go up.
I think that is a demonstration of what happens when you don't directly into the wind.
When you underestimate how fast and far your glider will glide on approach. :)
everyday I don't want to drive to work so I turn on the news, see a car crash and call my boss and ask "is it really worth the risk"
I used to drive for my buddy the hang glider. Jade cove near big sur and other places in SLO county. Him just jumping off a cliff. They have classes in Santa Barbara where my friend trained.
It wasn't terrible. Every beginner will go through this before learning to land perfectly.
I had a crash landing skydiving. Broke both legs, sacrum in 5 pieces, herniated q spine discs that were removed and a whole lot of other issues. That’s a good landing.
What costed 200
This reminds me of that hand glider level in Pilotwings for SNES. I can just picture the blonde instructor dude saying "I AM DISAPPOINT" as the "you failed" music plays in the background.
Hand glider is something you do after your parents have gone to bed.
Having flown a hang glider a number of times it looks to me like it was a tip stall ,and to land down wind is not the best idea, but he was o.k. And that’s what matters. He’ll know better next time. Good luck.
Yep, slow+billow shift to left=higher angle of attack on the right tip, stalling it and turning the glider to the wrong side. This has happened to me flying too slow scratching a ridge lift. Thankfully it dropped away from the mountain and I recovered after a dive.... Otherwise I'd have been screwed.
At least he didn't stall out over a cholla. That would have been a painful landing.
what music is playing in this video?
The most important thing ist: It did't explode.
It has no fuel nor running engines, no hot components, only some Dacron that wouldn't be particularly easy to ignite. So based on this, according to the Laws of Action Cinema, it should be about a 30 foot fireball when it crashes. Unless flown by Homer Simpson, who set corn flakes and milk on fire and melted down a nuclear power plant simulator, with him flying it would be a several kiloton explosion.
Algorithm kicking in I see
Where is a safe place to learn and slowly get comfortable with longer and longer solos?
@N1bbyZ, a good used glider and harness is about $1500 and up. In the USA the sport is regulated by local clubs and the USHPA. Google USHPA for their website, youTube won't let me post the url.
It looked to me (no experience at all) that the plane was a much better glider than he was used to. He seemsd to be trying to get it down, but it jut kept on flying. He seemed to be having a bit of trouble already at 0:30. Was he, perhaps, graduating from a basic training Rogallo?
My guess is that dude stole the glider and that was his very first, and most likely last, flight.
The good thing about a landing like that is, it's great when it ends. Know what I mean? ;-)
But if there was no danger and crash risk wouldn't it have been cool basically to experience hovering.
Was that one of the North wind crashes at the Howl? That local guy Rainman, told me to head for the bushes, that way I wouldn't wreck my glider as much.
He made that look quite hard, but then I have never tried it, but he never gave up.
Reminded me of my last landing in a hang glider, eons ago. Was lucky to get away with just a badly sprained ankle. After that, I learned to fly sailplanes 😀.
Hopefully you have not sprained any landing gear or wheels. 😮
Combat L awesome glider!!! How was your leading edge, was it bent ???
id like to try rather than waiting till night to see if i have a dream in flight
I remember when I was first learning to hang glide.....
how much is a wing like that?
Filter'Tron pick ups?
who said anything about bad landing?
What music is this?
It must be frustrating to be 12" above the ground and not be able to get down.
Looks like fun, rough landing notwithstanding!
LMAO you just reminded me of the time I said that to a hang glider pilot who crashed his hang glider and broke his leg.
It appears that having a body bag attached to the glider will be convenient at some point in his flying career.
thanks for the cool music also!
I just can’t give up ailerons, elevators and rudders for a weight shift craft
It was the ground effect and headwind cause the hang glider to balloon up. Should have turned base farther back.
Landing downwind is always a good time.
Downwind downslope....
I guess full face helmets for this sport?
I think any one who gave this video a thumbs down was probably expecting the glider to crash into a rock and explode into flames.
that looks fun actually
0.30 nice disco moves
landing against the wind?
He will be remembered....
... as the guy who scrapped his knee while landing
Looks like a thermal was developing right about the time he decided to land. You see as he turns base and final that his turns were coordinated therefore not a rookie. The double surface glider is not a beginners bird. As he's descending to the deck he appears to gain altitude (could be the filming angle or could be thermal activity). My bet is thermal -- especially when you see the wing lift suddenly during flare. He got away without broken glider parts or injury.
He lived. Thumbs up!
Damn, he looked good at fist but then he just ate it.
Since youtube is recommending me 12y old video can I resurrect long dead meme? So... Did he died? :)
The old bird just didn't wanna come down boy!
did this look like to anybody that darth vader was hang gliding?
What happened there? Were you not in-to-wind on landing?
i fly and some times ill see guys at the hanger messing with these always wanted to try it although im sure its alot diffrent then a plane.
oh man I had the exact same landing for my last flight, I'm told my landing speed was too slow, I'm adjusting my CG
what's the name of the song?
India me ye kaha milta hai
like he really got mad that he hadnt landed yet lol
that's what happens when you get impatient....the wing was not done flying...that thing really wanted to fly and fly and fly....good video !
well... he landed in one peace.
