    You have to let this sink in. It's on Mars. It survived the craziest landing ever. Awe is free, and rather pleasant. NASA. Accept no substitutes.

    I love how most of the wire management is done with string and knots. I heard they were concerned about adhesives in tape.

      String ties, when done properly, are far more secure than zipties. It is used extensively in aircraft, and thus naturally the next level up, spacecraft.

      - Wikipedia says - Each wheel has a pattern that helps it maintain traction but also leaves patterned tracks in the sandy surface of Mars. That pattern is used by on-board cameras to estimate the distance traveled. The pattern itself is Morse code for "JPL" (·--- ·--· ·-··)

    • @patthonsirilim5739
      @patthonsirilim5739 7 років тому

      2.5 billion is for the whole program that include the rockets that have to be used to lunch the real one into mars and the lander that descend the rover on to mars safely and all the advanced lab equipment for research on mars this was just a test chassis its worth less then 100k guaranteed looking at the rust on the bolts the real rover would have been made with titanium bolt forged aluminum and wrap in gold foil the material are totally different

      It can be when Earth and Mars are on the opposite sides of the Sun, and 34.8 mill miles on the closest. Average is 140 mill miles. This is why it is so important to launch exploration missions on the ideal date for distance to Mars.

      Why not just use the design they used for the lunar vehicles?
      I guess that would make too much sense.

    Jay thinks Mars is 249 Million miles from Earth.
    Clearly he was playing hooky the day they studied the planets in high school.
    Depending on their relative orbital positions, Earth and Mars can be between about 34M and 250M miles apart.
