+Simple As This Depends where you're from. They're not underrated at all in Toronto. The indie press pretty much falls over themselves trying to shower BSS and its affiliates with as much free publicity as they can handle, which is great, imo.
Walked into my room a few years back and my brother was staring at my laptop with this on the screen. He asked - "Is this the new Slipknot?" dude's a lost cause
@@timcherry9606 -Sure, and there's been 2 pieces that were really good/great as well. They don't "need" 8 pieces, or sometimes even more. I think they just really like playing with all their friends.
When I was younger I used to hate when other people liked songs off my "Secret Music " list, but now I wish everyone and their mothers would get to hear this song.
This was the first BSS song I heard, on the Wedge really late one night when I was babysitting. I can't believe I'm 30 and watching thinking how fucking clean and relevant and the video looks amazing still. Canadian alternative makes me so patriotic
Wedge was awesome, i don't understand where all the music video show surround alternative and indie music have gone. Like Much, YTV, Aside/AUX all have gone downhill.
Discovered this song 10 years after it came out on a college radio station. Didn't think anything of it. 10 years after that (20 years later) "You Forgot it in People" is one of my favorite albums. Loving music is a wild journey
So cool reading this, I’m in the same boat. “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” was one of my favorites growing up but never thought to venture beyond that song on the album and oh my god I’m so happy I finally did.
BSS is one of the most important bands I discovered on my own in college. That was back in 2005... Almost been ten years for me and this band. One great indie group that isn't afraid to rock out.
This song is so good. One of the best BSS songs ever. I still remember when I first heard this so many years ago on MTV2 Subterranean. Been in love with them ever since! Rock on, Broken Social Scene
OMG!!!!!!! I have been trying to find this song!!!! I remember it when it first came out I think around 2003 or '04 and I never knew the band or name of the song. I'm so happy now! Brings back memories of my lil sister listening to Interpol and stuff like this. I liked this song.
strangely, as much as i fuckin adore this people. I find they belong to my youth to a time where i was wild, self destructive, promiscuous and just generally nuts, full of energy. Now that im 39 and a father of a toddler, i completely lost the edge for this. Dont get me wrong, their last material and songs like "stay happy" are so much more fitted to my age...my point is that is like we're growing old together and that this song just popped on the sidebar and im like "god i really dont feel like being high on cocaine anymore and i really dont feel like dying. I actually care" LOL (what a karen comment, im drunk as a skunk dont judge)
I came to check this out because Jared Keeso said this was his favorite band. It's not really my cup of tea but I'm sure they have lots of people that love them.
i keep loving this song sooooooooooooooooo why can't i be them? that is their message, right? we ARE ALL a broken social scene..our planet.....hand us a mic or an intstrment and vocabularly with reflections to express...and we are with BSS......lovery...........................
As a teenager I had the ability to fall in love with any music my friends loved, even when it wasn't my taste. I say ability because I honestly didn't just fake it to be like them, these songs and bands still hold a very special place in my heart. I loved BSS but really is too emo for me now, I also used to love tool and cradleoffilth because of friends lol. Listening to a playlist like that was a bit of whiplash though.
@@JoshLStuff Oh? What is the opposite of emo? I would assume upbeat, happy? BSS makes me feel quite melancholy. Maybe it's more custom to who you are, and I never realized that...
'too many protest singers not enough protest songs' BBS got this. Its a Gap add meets smells like teen spirit meets a beheading video. Drum sound is a little like Neu! Love this band.
It's an early Fall morning, 7:33 am. The leaves had already started to turn a bright yellow and occasional brown. The wind blows a cool air into your hoodie, as you pull it tight around your cheeks. You dive into the car, and fire it up. As it warms up, you get situated. It has rained the last 3 days. Today though, the clouds part, and Ray's of sun split the shade into a glow. You turn left from the apartment, park Avenue. Hit the playlist, this comes on. A grin hits your face as you accelerate into 4th gear. Everything will be ok😉
i think maybe this person was hearing 'they all want to be the cops, they all want to fuck the cops' that was what i thought it said anyway, which caused me to agree with the suggestion that it was relevant for these times
This song reminds me of the churches in America and the injustice and virtue signaling that goes along with it. I was abused in a first church of christ when I was a child and maybe I'm drawing incorrect conclusions from the lyrics but it hits home anyway
Religions that praise gods as creators and protectors make my blood boil literally anytime that soemthing good happens it’s god who did it but when it’s bad it your own fault
no the drummer is justin peroff hes canadian as well John mcEntire was the producer of their latest album Forgiveness rock record he was playing the secondary set on tour with them
Half of Canada plays hockey, the other half are in BSS
+Mike Reed
As a Canadian, I approve this message. :)
+Mike Reed I fucking love this comment so much!
+Mike Reed Was this simply a joke implying we have a small population / BSS has a lot of members? or i'm missing something?
They have a lot of members and we like hockey.
That's how I took it.
matthew johnson Thats it? figured there was something more subtle to it.
After listening to this song for nearly 20 years, I finally saw them play it live yesterday. Unreal.
What an underated song from an underated band.

Definitely underrated outside of Canada.

Not underrated at all dude
Reminds me of Dinosaur JR
Walked into my room a few years back and my brother was staring at my laptop with this on the screen. He asked - "Is this the new Slipknot?" dude's a lost cause
Can you blame him? The video doesn't match the music whatsoever
Actually thats the only reason I stopped flicking channels to watch it. Was a good decision
nah, i like both bands. there's hope :)
Don’t know why they need 8 people. I was in 3 pieces almost as potent.

I love this song so much. Broken Social Scene has so many gems, it's a shame so many people are unaware of them.
2000's college rock indie scene they were huge
Same, can you recommend any similar bands?
@@MrE5785 First time listening to this and it instantly reminded me of Dinosaur Jr. so there you go

This song came out the summer before I started college (summer 2004)
It was stirring then and always stuck with me; timeless track and band.
Check out their debut record "Feel Good Lost," more rock-ambient, a lil bit more lo-fi but still great.
I'm just now discovering them!

Doing the same thing today
somehow I forgot about this band for like 2 years lol. I just remembered how much I like them
Rusty Shackleford same same. Very good indeed. Heavy rotation for me, circa 08'ish
So true. When I hear people talk about how much they love the new mumford & sons I'm just like BSS is better. Lmao
YES YES YES
The whole song is one amazing hook and it works wonderfully.

I've been coming back to BSS lately as well. Glad to hear other people are still rocking out to them!
saw them live a few years ago at the pabst theater in Milwaukee. killer show.
great song. I didn't start following the band until I saw Half Nelson in theaters
Still holds true to one of my my top favorite songs- Dawn

great song. I especially love the bassline
There were two drummers playing this when they performed in Peg City 2006. Definitely a highlight among the many shows I've seen and heard.
Time traveling to 16 years old, 2006 at my desktop computer in parents basement editing skateboarding clips. What a time
Interpol, The Walkmen, The Strokes, Ben Folds, and BSS = My college soundtrack.
Don’t forget about the stars. I remember seeing Ben folds at radio city music in NYC when I was 17 years old. 2006 what a trip
