Thanks for the update. Tamron is really doing amazing things. So many glass options and not enough money to play with them all. :) It will be interesting to check out the performance of the recently announced Sigma 60-600
Im pretty much exclusively a Tamron user now. You can’t beat the price/performance/coverage that you get with their fast zooms. This one is next on the wish list.

Should I get Tamron 50-400mm 1155g with A7RV 723g or Tamron 18-300mm (27-450mm) 620g with XT5/A6700 557g/493g mainly for photo and if I pair it with iPhone 15 13-52mm 171g for pocketable pic/vid stuffs and Panasonic HC-X1500 25-600mm 1200g camcorder with Zoom M3 mic 135g mainly for video? How about G9 II 658g with 50-200mm (100-400mm) 655g? Full frame Lumix, Nikon and Canon doesn't provide such focal lengths lens, right?
Tamron 50-400mm I can crop a lot more, 2X or even 3X, but is it sharp enough to do so? Tamron 18-300mm I can have a 27mm everyday focal length and have native 50mm more tele but can't crop a lot more and quality control doesn't seem consistent base on reviews? They all have 1:2 macro, can I add extension tube to all of them to reach beyond 1:1 macro? Should I add ultra zoom lens but need to change lenses or the iPhone is enough you think?
A7RV has the unique 4 was screen but not all video type get full sensor readout, XT5 has silver body color and dedicated tactile dials but will I use them much and I want realistic image color mainly, A6700 seem good grip but smaller EVF yet unpocketable, G9 II screen only go side way but it has 300 fps and has my favorite Yellow color as the menu theme!

Yesss! So excited about this! Glad you posted the video so I know to update mine. I’m so excited about the higher hit rate especially for panning shots of birds. I had a lot of misses earlier this week trying to get ducks in flight.

@@aspiziri I think so! It's been a while since I updated it. I have a few primes but I find myself using the 50-400 for most shots. I really love it.

This makes this lens even more compelling. Iam looking to add some focal length on the long end. Currently, my set-up ends at 105. The Sony 100-400 is no option, budget wise. For primarily landscape usage and only occasional wildlife: what would you guys recommend when comparing sigma 100-400 vs. this on, tamron 50-400. I mostly care about sharpness.

@@Princeton_James the update provided a big improvement to focusing speed and tracking efficiency that is most noticeable when the 50-400 is used on the professional bodies. As good as Sony's AF is, it is of course at its best on their best bodies. The A7iii user won't benefit like the A9 user will... The mid level autofocus systems still hide small issues and/or limitations deep within their specifications. This was easier to spot with DSLR (and manufacturers were far more open about it) than it is with mirrorless but it remains true all the same.
Stefan, great quick update about improved AF. I saw your last update about lagging AF , so I wasn’t so sure . But I see the AF has improved drastically, So I am rethinking this now. Besides, I just got an “used” 70-200 F4 for portrait / travel / landscape. I have time to return it . What would be your recommendation? Should I get the Tamron to replace 70-200 F4 . Also I know you own 100-400 GM. How will this Tamron stack up against 100-400 in terms of AF, for wild life ?

I use the a9 and a7iv, the wide af will always outperform the small tracking box mode, as long as there's no obvious distractions. Soon as it pick the eye it should be quite sticky but test it. I never really use the tracking mode unless wide af can't be used for some reason. Maybe on later cameras like the A1 the tracking mode performs alot better, not sure
Some of those bird photos looked like they were taken out at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. Am I correct about that? My brother in law, who’s a big birder, took me out there a couple of months ago to find a rare bird. Can’t remember what it was, but he found it and it was apparently a big deal.

Thanks for your review and I was wondering do you recommend this over the Sony 100-400mm? I do sports photography and want a 100-400mm range good autofocus + a sharp lens... the extra low end range I really like and the cost savings is great.
Depends on your needs. Shooting speed, sharpness, TC compatibility and AF performance goes to the GM but this one is great for travel and if you're on a budget.
Man, a little tougher choice. I have the Sigma 100-400 for youth baseball and it just doesn’t hit focus like my 200-600. Was thinking about selling it for the Sony 100-400 until the Tamron came out. Still leaning toward Sony. But if the Tamron could keep up with AF, it should be plenty sharp and I would sacrifice the 15 FPS and 1/3 stop for flexibility of the 50mm for team or close shots. Still probably leaning toward the Sony with having to carry around a wide lens with me but this makes it a little tougher.
Sony is the better lens of course and you'll pay for it. The IS is going to be noticeably better and AF is amazing. If you can, try our the Tamron and see if it meets your needs.
You didn’t mention at the end, but would you change your recommendation at all? Definite buy?

Hi Stefan , I have just bought this lens after watching your previous video and this one and upon receipt and first use I hear a very quiet electronic noise (my guess) when I turn it on. I have done a factory reset and re updated but still there. Do you know if it's just a feature? I use the Sony a7iv. Cheers

I have just gotten the tamron 150 500 but it has this constant whirring noise thats bugging me and thinking to return it( i snatched the lens for only 896 euro which is a great deal thats why am torn) did u have such issue? you obviously wont hear it outdoors but inside its like a maniac.
does the 50 400 have such issue ( its available here in Germany for 1300 euro ) ? will appreciate your input .
Totally silent in my experience. Can you compare your lens to another copy. Could be the IS but I dont remember any noise issues.

Contacted Tamron and they said the lens does operate Abit loudly but shouldn't be too loud etc. So i am going to return it to the store and try a replacement or just save a bit for the 50 400. Which one among these too is your favorite tho?
@@kevinmccarty157 I have updated the lens with v3 but nothing changed. Also shooting manual or trying VC off didn't help at all. It's a pity bc for the price i got it for it would have been a steal.

Enough, but too late for me. I went with the 100-400GM over this due to it's focus issues. Maybe I'll try on the future, but super happy with the GM for now.

Its a bit bigger and heavier and 10X the lens.
Thanks for the update! I wonder how the 50-400 compares to the Tamron 28-200 on overlapping focal range? I'm super happy with that lens but sometimes I find it too short for landscapes and my 200-600 is a beast to bring along every time I'm out.
I have the same lenses and I have the same thoughts about them, thinking about the 50-400 as a light weight alternative when walking longer distances.
@@racy1977 I love my 28-200 and 200-600. But I can see this 50-400 replacing them both in many occasions. But only if it's at least as sharp as my beloved 28-200. I'll never sell that lens. The only comparisons I've seen on the 50-400 is other 100-400 lenses. But since it's a 8x zoom lens I think it would make a lot of sense comparing it with the 28-200 and 70-200/300 also.
Good news on the update, pretty upset that the price has dropped since release of $500 in my currency. Whereas 35-150 has held firm. Weird

Between the sony 70-350mm and the Tamron 50-400mm which do you prefer? Are they about the same in performance and functionality?
i have tamron 28-200 and autofocus just does not keep up in action. I think my only solution is 100-400 gm ? i dont thing tamron can never get it to work like sony native lens. Otherwise that would be a great lens.

50-400 would be my pick and should keep up just fine. Much more versatile as well.

I just got this lens. I've only used it once so far and wasn't really trying to track anything. How do you know what update it is? Does it have a number.
Version 2 in the firmware. Need to update via PC. And then can use mobile or pc.
I am having difficulty updating. Downloaded the Tamron software on my PC. Connect to laptop directly with USB-cable to the lens (using my Sony a7 iii). Switch on camera. I get error "For firrmware update, you must connect lens directly with the lens.". I am using a USB-A to USB-C cable. Do I need a special "TAMRON Connection Cable"? and where do I get it?
Plug the lens via its usb c port while using the tamron lens utility on the pc.
Yes make sure you're connecting connecting to the lens and not the camera. Swap cords if issue continues.

After the last update, my lens is very, very soft and unclear on the long reach. All the photos taken with 400 mm or in crop mode with my A7iii are bad after the update. Also, the stability is is weaker and the focusing is worst and with a lot of hunting especially when the contrast is not so strong. Before update was perfect. On the photos attached after the update i had to press the shutter 5-10 times per each photo because the camera couldn't focus. What could go wrong? Is not normal that after an update the lens became way worst than before. Anybody in the same situation? Before update i was happy with this lens but now i'm totally unsatisfied.
I read that the downgrade is not possible. i have the lens for only one months... What should i do? Thank you.
That doesn't sound good. Have you been able to solve the issue yourself or will you send the lens for repair?
Sorry to hear!. Sometimes keywords get tagged in comments and they will not appear. Sounds like you might need to send it in for repair. That's definitely not typical of Tamron lenses.

Canon doesn't like third party lenses competing with their unfortunately.. Might be their downfall.
