I'm a Tom Landry-era Dallas Cowboys fan, but like some other NFL fans, I had my favorites from some of the other teams in the league. And I have to say, Larry Wilson was definitely one of my favorite "enemy" players. In my estimation, Larry Wilson was what the NFL was all about. He was the epitome of the word tough. God bless my aging NFL heroes from a bygone era.🏈
Met Larry Wilson at an Arizona Cardinals event. He signed my hats and T-shirts and abbreviation HOF. Very nice and KooL person. Rest In Peace, Larry Wilson.
In the 1970's in the new york area they shown the St. Louis Cardinals and when I seen #8 Larry Wildcat Wilson play on TV I have to say man he could hit.
It's for players like Larry Wilson where the Hall Of Fame serves it's foremost purpose, the acknowledgement of individual greatness. Not every great in the NFL got to win a championship, or even play for one. Some never even were in a post-season game of any kind. They had the bad luck of the draw being drafted by poorly run or hard luck organizations. Trades were not a guarantee back in his time and free-agency non existent. He probably was the first player in the HOF who played his entire career with the Cardinals, followed later by Dierdorf (Fitz coming one day). And they are the oldest organization in the NFL.
How the hell did the Cardinals never win it all with this quiet monster on defense? Football truly is the ultimate team sport. You gotta have it all, and unfortunately there was only ONE Larry Wilson.
These guys tells you who the quarterbacks were throwing too. The most overrated position call Quarterback. What great passers, who Joe namath threw a lot of Interceptions too.
Here's a story I wrote about Larry that you might find interesting: www.revengeofthebirds.com/2013/10/11/4827146/the-greatest-cardinal-ever-larry-wildcat-wilson

Beautiful 8-man blitz in slow-motion at 3:14.
Best free safety I ever saw in my 50+ years. Made the Safety Blitz a real weapon.
