For a few games during the 1971 season, the Oakland Raiders had an all-HOF offensive line (Ron Mix, Bob Brown, Gene Upshaw, Jim Otto, AND Art Shell!) on the field-together-DAMN, let's run the ball!
This was in my mom and uncles era man were they spoiled looking at legendary players and raiders royalty I would have loved to see them play in person I know all the old players instead of bed time story I got raiders foot ball story's ... so I feel you on that statement !!
Philly B I know exactly how you feel! My dad will STILL reminisce about the old days. He would talk about the soul patrol-that friggin awesome secondary- and how fucking mean our defense and o-line was.
It's crazy to say that despite the Steeler's being "the team of the 70's", Oakland had the highest winning percentage, And seeing that 3 players from that O-line made the list for Alltimers its easy as to see why.
A lot of Raiders made the list, Otto, Shell, Upshaw, Hendricks, old man Willie, Mike Haynes, Marcus Allen, Rod Woodson even though he was only there for a season or so.
@@mylittlepitbull3143Even if they had beaten the undefeated dolphins ,and proceeded to beat the Vikings in the SB ,it still would have been just two sb wins compared to the steelers 4 . Objectively stating ,Steelers still would be team of decade . Raiders weren't beating that 72 dolphins machine .
@@eliduttman315 Ah, the famous Green Bay Packers' sweep. You're right; they should never be forgotten. Also, I know that this is a video for Gene Upshaw (R.I.P) but I want to say Rest In Peace to Packer legend Jim Taylor, the legendary fullback who ran a lot of those sweeps. He passed away yesterday morning at the age of 83.
People talk that Upshaw was to light for today’s game and I beg to differ; with his frame, he could of put on 50 pounds and been a all-time great in any era. Upshaw was pure class off the field and a monster on it; one of the greatest players ever! This coming from a 49ers fan.
It’s also important to factor in he played his best seasons before the 78 rules changes. What big offensive linemen can do now would’ve been called holding back in the day.
I met Phil Villipiano in Boston in the North End. He had been in town for Phil Esposito's number being retired. Also something not do with they both belonged to some Italian club. We talked for 2 hours about the Raiders. I'm a big Raiders fan he complimented me about my knowledge of Silver and Black history. He said it was like talking to a former teammate. He was pure class. I wore the same number in high school #41.
He was also a union representative who advocated on behalf of players by throwing a few viscous blocks on the NFL owners and league management. He was far more than a great offensive lineman.
@@mja91352 , but the game was different back then, the wide receivers didn't play the same role as they do now. It was more about the Team. With the advent of social media, things changed.
Art Shell and Gene Upshaw should've had one numerical position for both!!! These two as a tandem made the Raiders a BEAST, not to mention NOBODY (before or since) has had the kind of TIME to pass behind his line than Kenny Stabler!!!
He was an intimidating figure - huge, with that big neck roll... represented that team well. And, he had great speed. He could kick it out on an outside run and kick a DB right out of the play. Opponents would literally only have 10 defenders.
I'm so glad have been a raider fan since 1968 and sold malts and sodas at the coliseum, while living five blocks away and having true earlier years signed memorabilia.... I saw a lot of these games personally year after year.... Generation Blanda, Lamonica, Stabler and Plunket alumni... John Madden, speaks for himself.. Carr...Hmmmm!
My favorite team in the 70's. God football was great then. This showboating stuff today is so immature and unprofessional. Rule changes have ruined the game.
i feel like todays Nfl players are better skilled but the game isn't nearly as fun to bad for me i was born WAY to late hey Nfl films you should hook me up with some Dvds
todays players are better skilled.... look up the old games from yester year,, back in the 60s,70s,,, they have full games on You Tube,,, then look at todays games,,, heres a hint real Turf vs AstroTurf
What’s wild is that GU played most of his career when rules were stricter for offensive linemen You had to keep your hands inside your elbows or else it would be called holding
What they didn't mention was that he is the only player in nfl history to go to 3 Superbowls in different decades but with the same team, Jerry although he did go to Superbowls in the 80s 90s and 00s, he did so with different teams, hope that makes sense
I just found out today that Gene Upshaw is a distant relative of mine. I asked my Uncle Ray and he told me that his sister's great grandson is Gene Upshaw thus meaning he's like my 3rd cousin or something. My Uncle Ray's sister is my Aunt Ruby. Gene Upshaw was also a brother of the same fraternity my father used to be a brother of. The name of the fraternity was Alpha Phi Alpha.
Upshaw was a great player no questions about it ( I always thought Art Shell was better myself) but I'll always remember him selling out his own retired veterans as well as players in general as the head of the NFL players association. To me that's more of his legacy than that of his playing days.
I love the way how Phil villapiano tells stories
I'd love to meet him and Matt Millen one day
arrepiante
Watch him in the America's Game documentary for the 1976 Raiders.
Brad Morgan he’s the best storyteller I heard on these top 100 episodes
He's / Phil is an ALL Time Raider IMO - hopefully he makes the Raiders HOF one day
Gene Upshaw, art shall, jim otto greatest left side offensive line ever
Don’t forget bob brown
Green Downshaw

King Bee L1C4
Run the ball ? Hell they did whatever they wanted when they wanted.
That's when other teams feared walking on the field against the Raiders because they knew it was going too be a long afternoon
I remember these bad dudes. Seems like yesterday.
Just imagine the fear the opponent felt on each play. My god.
Highway 63: Starting Raider Left Guard game from 1967 thru 1980. Didn’t miss an offensive snap in 14 seasons. Can’t touch that.
Gene was fucking savage!!!! He was the real definition of, "You aint touching no one!" RIP Gene.
R.I.P. "Uptown Gene"
Now he's in heaven
I'm glad this series is uploaded because I love finding out about players like this
This was during my dad's time! I wish i was around to see Gene, Otto, Ol' Man Willie, Freddie B, the Assassin, and Snake!

Shell&Upshaw were the best O-line tandem in NFL lore!!!!
& Otto at center, best three too.
Dwight Love you forgot about John Hanna
Walter Jones and Steve Hutchison is up there as well.
Never, ever, neglect Skoronski, Gregg, Thurston, and Kramer.

What a great tribute to an offensive lineman-Upshaw was a beast...vid was way too short...I love how Phil tells the story...
He was also a union representative who advocated on behalf of players by throwing a few viscous blocks on the NFL owners and league management. He was far more than a great offensive lineman.
He was a TOUGH, imagine him dealing with an Antonio Brown character?
Antonio would be crying, or be shutting up. League back then wouldn't hesitate snacking him down.
That would be the only reason to make me feel any sympathy for Antonio Brown

Navdan87 John Hannah

The steel curtain vs the iron line was a legendary war
I just wish my raiders won a few more of the battles
Legend.

Lmao
They had Jim Otto at Center, Gene Upshaw at Left Guard, and Art Shell at Left Tackle...That was insane
Otto, Upshaw, and Shell holding down one side of the OL. Incredible.
I wanna be a 70's NFL offensive lineman
50 years late buster
Me too. I would rock some facial hair like Bob Brown.
The neck roll just fits him better than any player I’ve ever seen. He could definitely rock that today
Probably the smartest O-lineman to ever play the game.
Real man right there
Gene Upshaw LEGEND!!!
Hwy 63 Classic Raider style. Great man 🩶🖤 ✌️
Crazy to see this guy came from my home town! "First you must believe"
John Villa , George Buehler, Dave Dalby, Gene Upshaw and Art Shell best offensive of all time
I met him in dc when he was nflpa, what a fabulous human being!
Cool i'm loving the these O Line guys. Gene seems like the guy who makes everyone on the team laugh also.
Gene, Gene the smackdown machine
As a Colts fan, this is what I hope Quenton Nelson will become for us. He's well on his way.
260-270 at guard, goes to show just how much bigger people in the NFL are now. Every starting guard is above 300 pounds.
cliff branch,billeitoff,Hubbard, Villapano,Warren Wells etc.
back when Football was Football
I can listen to Phil villiapano talk football all day
Upshaw was the actual leader of the team...
I dont think people understand how insane it is that Gene was a lineman. In today's nfl he could easily be an outside lb/defensive end.
I'm so glad have been a raider fan since 1968 and sold malts and sodas at the coliseum, while living five blocks away and having true earlier years signed memorabilia....

What you don't have today is heart. The will to obliterate the opposition. The guts. Plus today's rules makes football soft in comparisson.
At one time the Raiders had Otto, Mix, Boomer Brown, Shell and Upshaw on the same line. That's just sick.
Wish the game was still played like this
A thumb that was permanently broken just on Sundays
LOL
🤓
My dad was a fan Upshaw.
Buc bucanon is a awesome football name
Now TB12 is the only player to win the SB in three different decades
Most of the todays defence line players will shit their pants if they will have to play against Gene!!!!
Mal Vader they would go on injured reserve lol
Mal Vader gene be perfect to beat up on suh
Actually no he would be too small to start. Marshall Yanda is more than 50 pounds heavier.
The first thing I said when I saw the first few clips was, "You can't do THAT anymore."
What’s wild is that GU played most of his career when rules were stricter for offensive linemen

he could have been top 20 and no surprise here. He brought it every play and smart.

Tyron Smith & Lael Collins have the potential to be a great LT/LG tandem
Highway 63 will forever be a raider that number should never be worn again!
Im realted to dis man😂😭

1 of the best offensive guards of all time. my top 5 is Bruce Mathews Gene Upshaw Larry Allen Billy Shaw & Joe Deleamelaire.
john hannah isn't in your top 5? tsk tsk
+Mike Greensmith I agree. no John Hannah?
Isn’t John Hannah regarded as the best offensive lineman of all time? How can he not be on a list of best guards?
Only thing is you're forgetting arguably the greatest OL man of all time John Hannah
Joe Jacoby
Nearly the perfect Guard, size, strength & fast when pulling.had a little mean streak too.hog Hannah was #1,but take your pick.

Chiefs had Buck Buchanan Willie Lanier Curley Culp etc
I use like watching his Nephew Courtney Upshaw for the Ravens
Larry Munoz Upshaw top 3 lineman

Slightly better then Art Shell.
That football looked like a little Nerf football in his hands.
Come on Raiders let's keep this winning streak alive!
