1981 Honda C90! My First Ever Ride!

  • Riding a Honda C90 seems like something that would be on the biker's bucket list. Thanks to Andy Sills in Southsea I got to ride his 1981 Honda C90 and tick that off my list today! It seems so silly that after 15yrs riding on the road and riding over 100 different bikes, it has taken this long to ride one! The C90 is a semi-auto bike and I have not ridden one of these before, it is defiantly a skill you need to learn. The clutch did need adjusting so maybe that would have helped but I was getting there in the end, what a laugh though!

When the penny drops that the shifter is actually the clutch too, things tend to get a lot smoother

When you get the Rev matching right it’s quite smooth. That’s a truly beautiful unmolested example and Andy’s a lucky boy and very generous to let us get a taste. Cheers Andy. ❤

Best bike ever built is the crunchie 90 practically unkillable and believe me I've tried. Its the beetle of the bike world simple and basic easily maintained can take the abuse and still keep going they can cross continents with ease, love them.

Great fun bikes. There is an art to clean changes. Throttle off, toe down to higher gear, toe up & then throttle on. When you down shift you need to heal/toe the down shifter, keep it down whilst blipping the throttle to Rev match then release down shifter. It’s an are but it becomes natural in time. The new ones the CT125 Cubs you can pull up in 4th and go straight to neutral. Great bikes.

I think I was about 12 or 13 when I first rode a Honda 50, off road on local waste ground. Ground contaminated with asbestos cement waste from a local factory as was later discovered. You now need to try and get the new Supercub off a Honda dealer if possible to do a comparison.

Cor, that brought back memories of sticky floors and sticky women... Emmas nightclub... long gone now I think, but a haunt for us matelots back in the day 😀
My mate Pez (AKA Big_Pezza on UA-cam) loves his C90's and other cubs.... I have to say, they are super fun to ride.
    This one sounds super healthy...
Back in around 1992-1993 IIRC, I worked at Dominos Pizza in Horsham.... I was the "vehicle manager" (a BS job title), but it meant I got to ride the C90, while the other delivery riders had C50's to ride on... So much fun... you'd go round roundabouts and the exhaust would ground out lifting the rear wheel off the ground.... mega sideways fun! 😀

Me personally the best way to shift smoothly is basically to just shift as fast as possible, for example put it into 1st feather it and when im about to shift i close the throttle and instantly put it in gear and real quick feather the throttle again. Now for downshifting you can rev match, so you put you toe on the back of the gear lever and while you are pressing it down at the same time quickly blip the throttle

You look like you had fun, yeah the gearbox is odd, you can use the gear lever like a clutch, you stamp down I to first then bring your foot up slowly like you are letting a clutch out and you have a smooth gear change then, they are the best fun, the handling is comical but they do like a million miles to a tank if fuel. I had a c70 badged up as a c50 when I was 16

There's a lot of interest in these bikes lately, in Ireland now one will set you back 2500 Euro's for a C90 in half decent condition considering you can buy a C125 for 4500 would anyone bother ?
Why the renewed interest ? fuel prices, the simplicity of no electrics or both ?
The new C125 is nice but a bit plastic ?
There's an updated C125 with a different speedo, looks a bit better but would have preferred a darker background than white.
I recently got my learner permit here in Ireland and passed the IBT or CBT as it's called in the UK back in August. but still haven't found a bike. Not sure whether to get an old rebel 250, a newer Cb125F. I'm going for the full license so can only pass the test on a 50 kw+ bike which would be pretty big but people have told me they have rode around on 125s and used the instructor bike for lessons, pre test and passed on the instructor bike.
I'm not into power and speed but want something that can take a heavy guy up steep hills so I'd say I'd want no less than 250-300 cc because I'm in the country and have some hills.

  • @Bavenbushcraft

I hate that semi auto box, I've only ridden the new C125 and if you're rolling at 0.00001mph and drop it into 1st gear, the back locks 😂
You can ease the lever back up once it's selected the gear and that's like slipping the clutch....
I guess you get used to it, but crikey 😂

I think the Indians have a lot to do with it being the most produced bike in the world. They were sold by their million every year over there as a cheap affordable transport. They packed the whole family on them.
I think the c90 also at one point held the Guinness world record for the best fuel economy. It was something crazy like an unmodified one managed to get over 200 mpg!

Back in I think 2013/14 I got myself a vintage C90 complete with bacon slicer numberplate after watching a few of your videos, inspired me to get my cbt and later take it green laning as well which it was pretty good at. The thin tyres would dig in quite well and if it was to much for it I could bodily drag it out. Such good fun killed the original engine so something bigger went in and I changed the sprockets and would be able to get it to 70 if I throttled it’s neck hard.
Lethal on those bottle top brakes and bicycle tyres but good fun overtaking people with my front shopping basket fitted death trap, wish I still had it the prices have gone silly.
And it had one of your silver Spicy110 stickers.

Electric push bikes are limited to 15.5 mph and even a C90 is vastly more practical in my opinion.
For the price of a good Bosch powered Ebike you're talking north of 3000 Pounds these days and as much as 7,000 +. Ridiculous especially considering the depreciate like a stone.
Those escooters are dangerous, at least a C90 can keep up with the flow of traffic.
