  • In the 90s Japanese motorcycle manufacturers were developing faster, more powerful and more sophisticated sports bikes every year. But in total Honda Fashion, they decided to build one of the oddest little bikes in motorcycle history: The cub EZ90

I can see immediately why it failed, its not street legal. If it had been, it would have been a runaway success like the later fat wheeled semi off road Piaggio Typhoon was in Europe in the late 90's. Off road only bikes is already a niche, so this is a Honda niche of a niche. So no shit it didn't sell. This was a failure of understanding the real demographics of who would buy this. A teenager who might occasionally taste dirt with it.

If they put lights on it I feel like it might have sold better, that's at least one of the reasons the older CT series worked so well. You could cruise around the roads and then hit up the trails. You could go just about anywhere legally, especially if you lived outside a city. I remember that was one of the problems I faced with my '77 XL75, the previous owner had taken the lights off it, so I couldn't go on main roads without the police giving me problems. But my friends with their CT70 and ST90 could just cruise wherever as long as they didn't drive like maniacs.

I later in life began to appreciate how well built Honda stuff is. Thanks for the nostalgia.

Excellent video! I never heard of this bike. It strikes me as an incredibly good idea. It would be perfect on the rugged terrain of my friends' Texas Hill Country ranch where I hunt. And the snow model kit makes it like a Swiss Army knife. How about putting some close-fitting turn signals on it and room for a box? It would be a great errand bike. I'm sorry I missed out on having one of these.

I must admit, I never knew of this bike and should have. When I saw the video, I said to myself "What the...."? I'm glad I watched the video because I learned a lot of something I never knew existed. Thanks for another informative video!

I just like Everything about it, it’s just a fun toy to have and is really capable of a lot of things a modern scooter isn’t. Also this thing is a Honda, easy to repair and care, you could drive around the world with this thing

Honda has always had unique bikes & ATV's as far as I can remember. They had that Cub and a dirt bike with ATV tires called the Fat Cat. They had the Odyssey which became the Pilot. And even now they have a cool scooter called the Ruckus.
If this Cub were street legal, it would have been a cool little thing to put around on.

I only remember this bike because Nadine rides a pink one in the 1994 TV version of Stephen Kings The Stand. It was probably a paid ad placement. I have never seen one in real life.

Japan in the 1970/80/90s was on fire.
    Peak Japan.
They did incredible big and small toys like these.
It's sad to see that they are starting to lose ground to the Chinese.
    Best wishes.

I had one, it was a HSC CUB and it was a beast! It stript my rear sprocket to a wave in less than 3 month, it took 4 liters of fuel in only 30minutes of having fun. But it was near impossible to lock as it had solid wheels. Mine was the blue white red version and I am sad I do not have it anymore😫 it was very heavy on the front but still had to be careful not to open the throttle to fast as it has more than once caused some damage to “ objects” in my way😎

I used to watch this show in the early 90s that had kids racing on these. I was born in 84 so it was right up my alley at that age. Sadly, as a poor city kid it was never a possibility for me to have one. I still love them just because of that. Anyone remember that show? It could have been a Disney or Nickelodeon show.

Sounds like they took the drive train of their ubiquitous (in Japan) 50 cc scooters, comprising a 2-stroke motor + centrifugal CV belt-drive transmission, typically mounted on the swing arm, and moved it to the frame of this cute little trail bike. It must have been pretty cheap to bring to market. Looks like a lot of fun.

It is very upsetting to know that so many people watch your videos but don't actually subscribe. I went looking for Royal Enfield videos about 6 to 8 months ago and came across your video about how Royal Enfield became the best-selling motorcycle and I was hooked. I love your passion for the classics and though I feel it to be a bit too romantic, I still love the way that you lay out the videos and present the information. You make me care about motorcycles that I had no intention of caring about just like this one. I have been subscribed with the bell rung for some time now and always wait to see your videos and what comes out. Always look forward to see the great content you have coming out.
