E10 to reduce CO2 ? Have they factored in the diesel used to farm all of the maize used to make the bioethanol, not to mention the land wasted that could have been used to grow food crops -- thanks greenies !

Hi MrAvant - as far as I can tell from the research, yes. The whole production process was included in the calculations. As to biodiversity and the space not used for other purposes, that wasn’t part of my research. I was concerned mostly about the effect of the new fuel on gardening tools. But you make a valid point 👍. Thanks for posting. Nick.

You do realise that giant container ships and tankers use the most polluting heavy grade fuel, they produce as much pollution as all the cars output, add to that air flight and all the aviation fuel, after 9/11 and the flights were grounded, they had a few pictures showing various sites around the world normally covered in haze or smog, all crystal clear, no flights no pollution, there were reports of pollution levels dropping, then strangely most of them disappeared, and they made big issues about other pollutants in the air.
Recycling my cardboard and plastics is not going to solve anything, most of it is dumped in Turkey or Pakistan as uncovered by investigators, stopping or making air travel cleaner and cleaning up the toxic output from shipping would solve a lot of issues. Sadly, the media likes to be the government mouthpiece and continue with Net zero.

CO2 is a vital plant food. Pollution is an entirely different matter. We are living in a lunatic asylum with the public believing any nonsense that the powers at be can invent.
Climate change is normal but only governments instigate weather control and setting fire to forests.

Coming from a garden machinery dealer point of view we see the vast majority of mowers using E10 and two stroke machinery come in for starting issues using E10 fuel with the basic red colour two stroke oil which is sold everywhere from DIY stores to manufacturers such as Stihl. Our dealership decided to stop selling the red two stroke oil and only sell the two stroke oils with the fuel stabilisers in them which for example with Stihl are green in colour(some other manufacturers like Husqvarna may have a blue colour), these oils also give better starting, create less smoke and provide better lubrication. We also recommend using the Alkalyte non ethanol fuels in two stroke machinery or machinery like pedestrian lawnmowers, tillers generators or wheeled leaf vacuums that you don't used for long periods. We also recommend E5 and fuel stabilisers in ride on mowers as these aren't immune to fuel issues either.
We see less customers return machines with starting issues using fuel additives, Alkalyte fuel and the two stroke oils with fuel stabiliser additives.

    Thanks for the vid.
Remember, E5 doesn't mean it has 5% ethanol, it means that's the maximum it may contain (same with E10). This can vary depending on fuel supplier and location. For example, Esso E5 in the midlands and the south of England contains 0% ethanol however they are legally required to label it as E5 despite it having no ethanol.
I use E5 for all my garden machinery

My little used 2018 bought two stroke standby generator was fuelled up in November 2021.
A power cut in March 2022 started the generator and it ran for around 15 minutes then cut out.
When I went to restart it it did not sound right so I tried the manual pull cord and noticed immediately that there was very little compression resistance.
A stripdown revealed a scored cylinder bore that was beyond repair and at the time I thought that I had added too little oil to the fuel.
I have since learned about this and I am really angry that the oil companies or government failed to get the message out that this fuel is poison to some engines.
I never knew about the problems with E10 petrol as I was never informed about it but it has cost me a £189 generator.
I used to believe and try to be "green" but now they can shove it where the sun does not shine thanks to this policy of blindly introducing a fuel that wrecks small engines and many old cars.

I only found this video after my petrol lawnmower had completely seized up. I had tracked the oil and all was ok until the first cut after the winter. I used fuel purchased last October that had been in a jerrycan and had no idea that E10 would cause issues. I have made the decision to move to electric, as an excellent offer on Greenworks for a lawnmower with 2 x 4Ah batteries, trimmer and hedge cutter for under £270 was available. I only have 4 small to medium lawn areas and believe battery power should cope with all of it. Sadly I think E10 fuel is just not viable for garden equipment and the experience makes me wonder about all those car engines that must not be as healthy.

If they have not been removed from youtube there were videos on here showing you how to remove ethanol from pump bought petrol by simply using water and food dye. Removal of the ethanol content did reduce the octane rating but this can be addressed by adding octane booster.

I transferred to Super-unleaded some time ago for the cars as I found that I was getting around 10% better fuel economy for a 7-8% price premium, that naturally translated into my horticultural machines as it made sense to only have one source of petrol. Soon after that I found out the damage that the ethanol was supposed to cause to older classic engines (I have 4 classic cars) and the horticultural machines. Since the advent of E5 I have used a fuel stabiliser to help store the fuel as I can't guarantee how much I will have at the end of the season and flushing the surplus is not recommended. When E10 was introduced Shell and BP confirmed that their super unleaded in parts of the country did not contain ethanol despite stating it on the pump and I believe that I live in one of those areas. As a sort of confirmation of the state of play I recently saw a test of the amount of ethanol in super unleaded petrol, where most of the top brands only had 2 1/2% ethanol although the location where the fuel was sourced was not stated.
I really don't fancy the idea of battery powered machines because of the inconvenience - they require batteries to be charged over significant periods and I have various tools that are battery powered that have failed prematurely, notwithstanding that batteries are often model specific and individually are expensive. Most of my gardening kit is high powered professional quality to maximise production as I simply can't afford the time required to use low power units. I look after my tools which are often decades old but still function in top form e.g. my Honda HR19/4 36 years old mower and my 33 years old Yardman 30" lawn tractor. I will be seriously upset if they are destroyed by the fuel.

    • @NickBarban
      @NickBarban  Рік тому

Hi Clive. I can understand that. Very little of my gardening work is light. I’ve tried a Bosch battery mower. It was pathetic. No power, no torque and no run time. With the volume of stuff I do and the amount of power I need to get it done, I can’t see me moving over to battery tools any time soon, unless it’s just do my own garden. But the cost for just that purpose is prohibitive. As it is, I need to buy a Euro 6 rated van, to avoid the ULEZ charge coming in August - that cost would be over £300 per month with my current van! Anyway, just have to see how the technology evolves over the next few years. Thanks for posting. Nick.

Most mowing and wood cutting now using battery tools and sometimes using petrol kit for certain jobs.

Years ago, 1961 my friend was running a James motorcycle with a Villiers 225cc 2 stroke engines d to make it smell like a racing motor cycle he added around a tablespoon of Castrol ‘R’ oil to his 2 stroke fuel mixture. Now for those who don’t know Castrol’R’ is a vegetable based oil. When burned, like cooking oil it leaves a sticky gum residue in the combustion chamber and piston rings.
The fuel mix we are putting into our cars and lawnmowers is just that vegetable oil. The only way I was able to clean my friends engine was to strip it down to all it basic piece s, with the exception of the crankshaft which needed special tools which I didn’t have access to .
To glen all the parts (not many) on a 2. Stroke engine was to use brake fluid and a 1 inch paint brush and soak all that I could get at. I started at 8 o’clock Saturday morning and finished it off by Sunday evening at around 6pm. Washed out the fuel tank with cellulose thinners an put in some petrol/oil mixture and a shot of Red X .
I know what it does to petrol engines but we also have to put this rubbish into diesel engines. Is this causing problems with exhaust systems as my BMW 420d has had 2 recalls for the particulate filter catching fire and this vegetable additive is just the thing to cause as drivin at less than 3000rpm doesn’t get the system hot enough and 3000 rpm would break the speed limit ☹️

E10 95 octane fuel with the Ethanol removed could have an octane value as low as 88 - some places suggest even lower. That could be terminal for any 4 stroke.

I use a dual 18v e.g. 36v Makita multi-tool strimmer pole saw. Strimming on level 2 (out of 3) gives me about 15 minutes. level 3 is the highest speed for about 10 minutes.
With 4 batteries, I manage the edges of my garden. But I have a 32-acre property and to clear the fence lines for the electric fence I still need my Stihl professional 2 stroke brush cutters. Very heavy brush, Rushes (Swamp grass as some in the USA call it) and brambles. A typical session is 4 hours, and 3 refills of fuel and 2 beers..
On the other hand, the 36volt Makita Chainsaw works relatively better because there is less energy loss in the idling that goes with this stop start type of job. And I have no complaint about the power of any of these tools! But for Brush cutting/Strimming it is only good for home maintenance. This may change in a few years though, The 40v platform for Makita seems an improvement but it is completely new, so no incentive for me to go there. May as well go for any other brand.

A panic was created to buy up the reserve's of E5 and replace it with E10 , first time ever we were told full had a use by date and people believed it.
If that was the case garages would need to let the consumer know the use by date of the fuel, and it would change every single time the forecourts had their bunkers filled.

Have gone thru approx 17 leaf Blowers in 25 years until I stopped buying 95 Ron Supermarket Fuel and using the Red Sthil Oil.
Domestic Garden use only and for cleaning driveway etc.
Now purchase 99 Ron Non Supermarket Fuel, and either the Green M/Cycle Oil or the Husky Blue
and Leaf Blower is 4 years old and still going strong.
On the last Sthil BG Blower I had it examined after it went and their Conclusion was that
the Ethanol was causing premature cylinder wear and causing water contamination in the
    tank and carb.
You only have to see the damage that has been caused to Audi Alloy engines which is stated to
be Ethanol damaging the coating to the cylinder block walls leading to loss of Oil control
    by the rings etc.
Friend had a Classic Merc 190 which was not used much, went in the garage one day after smelling
fuel to see that a 'rubber hose'' to the tank had been almost 'eaten alive' and the tank
had emptied onto the Garage floor.
Diagnosis was ''Ethanol Contamination'' of the fuel hose lining.

I am trying to find replacement fuel hose for a small strimmer whose pipes and primer bulb have all rotted. Most of the suppliers of the standard clear plastic type pipe say don’t use theirs with E10. E5 only. And I suspect that the suppliers that done say are just dodging the issue. No one claims E10 compatibility. Seems that E10 softens the pipe. So has anyone found that E10 rots their pipes? Using a petrol additive seems unlikely to stop this problem, as there is still 10% ethanol there.
Only pipes I can find that are E10 compatible are the thicker rubber covered ones and there isn’t any way to use these thicker ones in my strimmer. So I need to use super unleaded only it seems.

Similar story of you run carburettor equipped vintage motorcycles....

If alkylate fuel is so good, why don't we have it for vehicles.

    • @NickBarban
      @NickBarban  Рік тому

Hi John. Modern engines closely match emission levels that’s alkylates produce in smaller engines for tools. But, alkylates are produced from gaseous hydrocarbons from fossil fuels. Essentially, they are a byproduct of the oil refining processes. Thanks for posting. Nick

Because this would put money back in the pocket of the common man. They can't allow that to happen. It's all about extracting as much profit from the common man as possible. Ethanol in fuel is just one of the million ways they achieve this. Think of it as a hidden tax.

what is the long term effect of using plant based source f0or making fuel? Deplete soil of its nutrients and minerals, diminishing soil based life, and that can cause a different type of eco problem similar to global warming, so Governments have not looked into long term effect of using sugar canes and corn and other plants to make fuel, we would certainly run out of food essential for life. And of course that would also mean there would be far fewer animals if plants and grass becomes scarce. So what would you eat E10 fuel?????? No matter what we do, or how we do, there will be an effect , its a simple thing to understand behind every cause there is an effect, that is how things evolve, one of the major problem we now face is our explosion in population, it is wrongly assumed God will provide infinite amount of resources, but if you convert matter into energy, heat is given off, so matter may not recycle back into earth to continue to support biological life. Heat produced can escape into universe.

Hi. I think this might be a whole other video to go into this. Until we have governments that sing off the same hymn sheet, we might just go round in circles. Hybrid, EV, ethanol, Hydrogen, Alkylates, Solar and whatever new cockamamy idea comes up, I just wonder if I’m retired before we know what the future power supply for the 1.4 billion vehicles will be. Thanks for posting. Nick.

best solution is to buy a $35 ebay LPG and Petrol or dual fuel carb , fit it . gas LPG is safer than petrol .LPG bottles only explode when the bottles are not serviced or stupid people remove the safety , also it never goes bad, after 20 years LPG has not deteriorated at all , as good as when bought . also half the emissions of petrol . mostly water and co2

Switch off fuel and let engine run out

  • @brianeggar
    @brianeggar Рік тому

There is a simple answer to everything.
If wood chips from the US to feed the Drax power station is regarded as carbon neutral then there is nothing to stop plant oil being used.
For that the new rotary engines from Mazda and Liquid Piston can be easily adjusted to run on that.
So instead of going to a petrol station you go to your local farm to get filled up.
As for the evil ethanol that will just go into the dustbin of history.
Actually, you could probably suggest the best plants to grow to obtain oil.
