    hi peter, just wanted to let you know that the unpopped kernels cast super well in resin, when u cast it in clear resin and sand it down it leaves a super interesting gemstone type look. the red kernels are transparent inside but provide good definition, while the blue and yellow ones are the only ones with some actual color. I've seen it done on knife scales, but it'd make for an interesting bowl

    • @Laria28
      @Laria28 4 роки тому +12

      It results in a different product. If one is basically making a mold and then filling it, the objects you put in the mold stay whole. In a turned bowl, bits of the object are turned away, leaving cross sections of objects visible in the final product. Both objects are beautiful, they’re just different. The popcorn, small as it is, could make a bowl using molds quite simple. Other objects like pine cones require turning. It’s just up to the artist.

      To be honest, I'm a fibreglass fabric kinda guy; I'd start with weaving the kelp, then kiln-drying it over an up-turned bowl, then painting it with resin until rigid, then building the bowl with alternate layers of resin inside and out. Very little lathe time at all.

    Looked great! The solution for floating could be to over fill each layer with popcorn, above the resin line by an inch or two. Then put a plate or piece of ply of approx the right diameter for each layer on top and put something heavy on it. When removing from the pressure pot tip out the loose popcorn and repeat. Or actually better still pour resin on the loose excess and overfill again. Might work?!
