Making Astro Smurf a new Space Helmet - Toy Polloi
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- I picked up this vintage Schleich Astro Smurf at a recent toy fair as I had stupidly sold of my childhood one. He was missing the Space Helmet as they all seem to be, but I have an idea on what I can use to make a replacement. Let's see if it works!

Astro Smurf was my first ever Smurf. Loved him.
I think he looks great and I'm sure there are many astro smurfs out there who could benefit from your video 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I'd personally prefer the larger "helmet".
to insmurfitey and beyond, good job Dave
1.25'' clear plastic ornament/ball/sphere returns a lot of results, that would be 30mm. We don't say bauble often in the states so that may be limiting your searches!
I'd go for 1.5" it's about 3.5cm
Brilliant as always.
I was thinking of doing something simular to that vintage Star Wars "car" who has this kind of dome roof.
Next project, making a helmet for Crulos/Krulos form Dino Riders 😉😄
A circle template for technical drawing has holes in a variety of sizes, and is handy for marking holes on curved surfaces too!
Awesome I need to repair mine..
On a side note I still have a National garage Smurf sticker for my car,its been in every car I've ever owned as its vinyl with no sticky glue on it.
That looks almost perfect to the original look!
Dave you need to make a Custom Helmet with a white back half and a gold tined front, Now that would be out of this world. Cheer's John
I remember my brother's friend Mike having a ton of these Smurfs. He'd keep them in these custom shelves that were just big enough to hold them and would never ever let me hold them or look at them up close. To this day I'm heart broken that I didn't get to see them and never knew where to buy them. I guess it's just one of those things you just can't have in life 😔
I love the mini Smurf figures I even played some of the 'Smurfs! DAS Modelling clay set' from the early 1980s as I mold many Smurfs and shape them in any pose and color:)
Lol! I actually had this guy as a kid. I broke it whilst trying to take the helmet off and it shattered. Somehow this video has given me closure. Lol!
That's most likely what happened to mine as a kid. The helmet didn't last long at all.
That’s pretty Smurfy👌🏼
Love your work, keep up the good Smurfing.
Thanks! 😁
Another great video as always, I really loved these smurf models as a kid, many, many years ago I remember going to Thorpe Park on a school trip and they had loads on sale in the gift shop, I ended up buying a soldier smurf. Lol
Smurfy!
My favourite Smurf figure. With his helmet on, he'd float in water.
It might help you in future, if you can get a set of digital Vernier callipers - I got a set cheap on ebay some time ago, and I use them all the time, to measure external and internal diameters. A great repair, yet again. Nice one.
Dave, your Astro Smurf looks amazing with either sized space helmet.
Great job and a fun video as well.
Thanks!
I am not a Smurf collector, but I go to comic and toy shows with my kids, and that looks like the best Astrosmurf I have ever seen. Any originals with the bubble helmet are always discolored and scratched. Even the best condition you could find is not going to look as sharp and clear as that brand new bauble!
I had a few Smurfs and watched the show, like all 80s kids, but I wasn't hot or cold on them. As an adult, and as an artist I love them. They're beautifully designed and drawn. I might start collecting and repairing some if I see them around the toy shows.
Great work!
When I was little I often used to find Smurfs in the streets, I believe back in the day you got them when you got petrol?
Your new intro....1980 Tom Baker title sequence inspired?
I would say it's Peter Davidson era, but I may be remembering wrong. I loved the music from that version.
@@toypolloi ua-cam.com/video/DKFueZz5Cy4/v-deo.html For his last season as the Doctor.
Ah right. It was this version for me with the Peter Howell music. ua-cam.com/video/WqT_eYDhfRg/v-deo.html
Another great toy fix!
I like such little projects very much. And the small, cute smurf looks awesome with his new helmet.
Thanks. It's been a figure I have wanted to get for ages. Simple fixes are the most fun.
@@toypolloi my sister and myself had a large collection of smurfs. But I don’t know where they are now.
This came out great!
Awesome toys collection
In space no one can hear you smurf
Ooooh, nice electric rotating display.....
Thanks. I bought it a while back and keep forgetting to use it. You should be seeing it more often.
great job Dave.
I measured the original helmet now, the sphere is 31.8 mm and the joint is 33.5 mm in outer diameter, so you are very close indeed with the 30 mm bauble ball. Great little fix!
(Edit, there seems to variants dependant on production year/place with various sizes)
Thanks for the details. That's great to know that what I made is very close. Cheers
Amazing job! Where to find this bubble? I have 2 Astro smurfs with no helmet
Thanks. All the details are in the video. Cheers
great job Dave. you are very close with the 3cm. I messured mine and it comes in at 1.25in or about 3.25cm not the 3.5 you guessed.
I did take a pick if you want to see it.
That was a good guess then. Hard to tell from photos so thanks for confirming. Cheers
I was really hoping for a new Toy Polloi video today, and this one didn't disappoint! I really love these videos where you find cool objects as brilliant replacements. And your commentary on clear plastics was spot on, when I work with canopy sections on my model kits I'm always careful as the clear can shatter quite quickly as you mentioned.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Simple project, but still fun to get this figure looking nice.
Nice job
Thanks!
Dreamy . 👨🚀 🖖
Cool video; great work. This was the one Smurf I ever bought (being at that teenage phase where I was self conscious being seen buying "little kids' toys"). Both sizes look good, but the second is best to my eyes; the hat looks like its folding over because of the helmet, giving the impression that that's the helmet made for it (and vice virsa). As always, enjoyed your video.
Good idea Davy
That's an amazing job. I marvel at how you find these things.
This really worked out perfectly, Dave. The three centimeter version fit like a glove and I honestly would know the difference if I saw it on display. It was quite a simply and effective repair. Cheers!
I really like your way and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise
Hey Dave
I would be happy as well.
Take care
Very cool and as always a fun watch. Thank you!
That brings back memories !
He re-helmeted the Smurf! I love it!
Cut a few more holes for air...he's turning blue. *laughs in dad joke*
Boom 😂
Very simple fix to add a great looking helmet . Incredible as always I look forward to the next one .
Glad you like it!
Great job again! Love the smurfs. Used to have dozens of them as a kid. Including this one 😍
Thank you! Cheers!
it's Smurftacular
Hey there. I enjoyed this as I do most of your videos. There are fishing floats available which are very similar to the "baubles" you've used here and in the Landspeeder video, although the two halves are likely welded or glued together so as to be waterproof. I have not researched the available diameters of said fishing floats but I just thought you might find that information useful. I apologise if you have already researched those and this comment is thus pointless.
Thanks for the info!
Great video and as always great commentary.
Glad you enjoyed it
Dude!!! Perfect!! This is my favorite Smurf!!
Mine to!
@@toypolloi Another of the many reasons why your are Epic and cool. Legend!!
Smurfs - the action-less action figures. Yet I had so many.
I'm not a big fan of smurfs. I only have a couple. I think this one turned out great. Nice fix. I didn't even know it had a helmet. By the way. I always called it Space Smurf or astronaut Smurf. Figurs it has a different name. Lol
This seems like the perfect project for 3d printing. That is something that can be easily modeled and resin printed in clear. Just a thought as I know you don't generally go to 3d printing as a solution but in this case one could easily model it to be the perfect size.
You could easily 3D print a ball of the correct size....but getting it crystal clear wouldn't be easy....clear resins have a nasty habit of going cloudy/ yellow when cured.
Personally I like the two balls Dave modified, they are both charming in different ways
Just so you know, AceMilo, 3D printing in clear hasn't been perfected yet. The clear resins don't translate too clear when printed. They always come out smokey and somewhat opaque.
@@morlockmeat not true. I print clear resin pretty darn clear. Fdm clear has too much air mixed in and isn't clear. Resin though prints great clear.
@@acemilo Thanks! That's good to know!! Glad it's gotten better!
You could buy him with and without a helmet
I didn't know that. I just remember mine having and loosing his helmet very quickly.
