I skated in top of the line Bauers for years. I thought I would never switch brands. When the FT1 came out with the 1 piece design, I tried them on and really liked the fit. I decided to take a chance on them. I am now in AS1's. I could definitely notice the difference in a 1 piece boot. You feel more energy transfer and have a more connected feel. I feel like my blades are slightly sharper. The 1 piece design is definitely the way forward. Bauer needs to just do it already. I remember hearing there were patents that restricted them though.
Agree 100%. I love my FT4 Pro's, but only time I notice the once piece boot construction is when I wipe off the blade. My feet are just not that sensitive.

Finally, I've been wanting to know why for a long time lol but I do agree and have always said that the difference in energy transfer between the 2 is minimal, it's more the natural skating ability of a person and the physical shape and how much someone practices his skating skills, those 3 thkngs will improve someones skating.
The counter argument is you can take this reasoning at every stage. IE: this or that tweak has arguably small benefit in isolation. Take it from someone who grew up on skates in the 90s. Each step in evolution from then seemed minimal. Until you compare what you have today to the average skate on 1995. It is night and day. Quite simply, there were things that you simply couldn’t do on those old skates that average players can on today’s skates. You need absolute confidence in the material to pull off tight turns, for example. Anyhow, this is how innovation goes. Through arguably minimal iterations.
I think your both hitting it on the head - we’re really talking about an elite skate, not a pro level skate as the market wants to define that product range moving forward, and tech in an elite skate is going to be dramatically different, but only someone who has mastered skating will see a noticeable change in skating proficiency. Like I’ve been skating for 25+ years and play 4-5 times a week and play A mens league year round, and I’m just now considering an elite custom skate because I feel like I could benefit from a more direct energy transfer (not skating mechanics at all really) in a ultra stiff boot to save energy and be sharper with less energy as I get older. Best thing you can do boot-wise is spring for a custom pair in your desired stiffness when your confident enough to wear a stiff boot, get perfect fit, and skate.

Mike Gartner is still amongst the fastest skater record holders and that was in early-mid 90s. Those old leather boots certainly never stopped someone like Paul Coffey from being every bit as good of a skater as elite players in the NHL nowadays.
Sure there are stiffer and lighter skates these days but the difference is minimal. 95%+ of the skating is in the ability of the skater not the skate.
I play and ref competitive adult league hockey. Once there was a young and really talented skater that broke a holder on one of his skates early in the game. He went and grabbed a rental skate that was from 1996 (all blue with ski boot type straps) and he was still one of the best skaters on the ice. This is a league where most of the players grew up playing AA or AAA or at least high school hockey

Had a feeling it was more marketing than anything else for 99% of players. Absolutely agree that the "fit" of the skate is first and foremost when choosing a skate. Long journey to find a new pair of skates to replace my CCM Tacks from more than 15 years ago. Finally realized the Jetspeed fit my foot best, but had to go way down in stiffness level to the FT460 to find the right flex, as skates are soooo much more rigid nowadays compared to even top of line ones from yesteryear.
Anyway, thanks for all the vids...helped me in my long and winding road to get a new pair of skates that I can actually use!
It's worth mentioning the MLX skate being one of the first one-piece boots. One guy went on to make the Mako, and the other went onto what is now True. I highly recommend the new TF Pro custom.

I am 52 I can use. Ccm to Bauer to graf to Reebok to Nike. I wore all different skates all the time. I never looked deep into all the measurements to tounge to anything just strap em on and play. Back in the day the old time breaking in the skate. I used a spray bottle to soak up the skates and walk around in them. To me that was the best way it worked til they baked every skate.
I could Be wrong but I rocked a pair of Easton Synergy 1500c skates back in 2005/2006 and they had a carbon one piece design. the fit was great but the carbon had issues with cracking overtime. After trying the ultrasonic skates and having major problems with the fits and build quality I went with the as3 pros. although the as3 pros have flaws the fit is better than the Bauer line, just my experience
Given that a 2 piece is in a sense cheaper to make yet the prices are just as expensive as ccm top end one piece, I feel as a consumer I’d be getting ripped off if I purchased a Bauer top end skate that’s a 2 piece vs 1 piece, the difference might not be extreme for performance but the fact that there is a slight difference means a lot especially when you’re shelling out big bucks. Also with ccm runner lock has there been many reports of blades popping out? Bauer’s I hear pop out more. So once again slight difference can mean a lot.That’s just my 2 pucks worth.
With you. Bauer spends a lot of money on marketing, and seems to rush their “advancements” to market without thorough R&D. Your example of Edge holders popping steel, the sub-standard material selection on both the tendon guard on the NXG and the Stability Lacing System on the MX3 and Vapor 1X all come to mind.
I dont think bauer took the cheaper route with the hyperlites. I would guess that the 3 piece outsole constructiom mighy even cost more than the one piece construction. With the supremes bauer defo took the cheaper route but they also have tech that ccm doesnt have.
I have original MLX, Easton Mako 2 and True (original screw out blade). I don’t know why with the Eaton I skate better (am 68 now!) but the Mako feels like it transfer energy more effective than the True. I can’t explain it and I even have BladeTech on True which I really like as well. But there is something about the True boot that feels for lack of a better term “clunky” , but if you get a shot in the foot the True is by far much more protective. Maybe my imagination but the Mako 2 feels lighter than the True as well. Follow the old motto- if it works don’t fix it! So I suspect the Mako will break down faster but we shall see.
I couldn’t find better skates than Easton Mako. At this moment I have True custom and as you mentioned it feels clunky. I hope someday Bauer will use Makos technology.

I need help. I've spent my whole skating/hockey career in all leather. Bauer Black panthers. There's no padding inside except the tongue and the leather boot itself. Its very comfortable.
I'm not used to the feeling of skates right on my ankle bone as the CCM's do with that generous ankle padding.... I skate with my ankles a lot and enjoy having that ankle mobility while not lacing it up all the way.
I have felt the need for new skates though.. these old leathers take many lace ups to finally get tight.. and since they are soft, all leathers. I've become accustomed to skating with a boot that completely bends left and right. Im super confused what to do lol.

My son is in his 3 pair of True Skates (currently Marner Pro Stocks) and raves about them. Perfect fit, and new shift holder works well. Canadian made is a bonus. Well worth trying.
Chris all your videos are amazing. When you will make comparison hyperlite vs ft4 pro on ice? My previous skates were supreme 2s pro but now I have ft490 and I confirm boot response is different and better in ccm.

@@Nick-qt5sx main different is stiffness because ft4 pro skates have best materials (stifness index ft4 pro - 195, ft4 - 180 etc), runners (ft4 pro - step blacksteel, ft4 - step steel, only this two models are good for ice hockey, lower line is good for recreational skating), comfort (ft4 pro have more pad inside skates = more comfortable). Design is not important.

I would like it if you did more videos on equipment from True and Warrior as well. I'd love to see a video on the True Pro Custom skates (I'm considering getting a pair), as well as the Catalyst 9X skates (TBA), Catalyst 9X and PX stick, and also a video on Warrior's Alpha LX stick.
I'm running the True customs (I have a really high instep) and would recommend them. They do take a little getting used to and you need to decrease your hollow on your grind.

don’t get a true stick , durability is ass. gone through 3 9x’s in 3 months, they’re wonderifl but not worth it and same problems with project x.
@@sps3172 I found the holder to be really tall which gives you a lot more purchase on your edges. I dropped from a 1/2" to a 3/4" just to be able to stop without launching myself and it still feels too sharp.
@@Alex-pn5bk I go for the best fitting stick that I can find in the clearance section. If I find a durable model that I like I might buy half a dozen or more to get me through the next couple of years. Beer league doesn't require a $300 stick (I prefer $20, but end up paying between $40 and $75 average).
How about the fit? Does the heat molding process provide enough of a difference in fit to be worth noting (one-piece vs two-piece boot)? I've never owned a one-piece skate.
Purchased a one piece AS3 boot about a month ago. Unreal how well they wrap the foot after baking. So nice and snug. Can definitely feel the difference on the foot vs a 2 piece. Would be very difficult to go back.

When did the Makos come out? I had Synergy SE16s with a one piece boot in 2009, and SE10s with a one piece even before that.
I wanna say at least 8-9 years ago Easton first put out the mako line then followed the next year with mako II. the SE16 was what id call a pseudo one piece boot but it was pretty damn close for the time. I had mako II for 7 years in a Bauer cowling as goalie skates then went to trues because I couldn't get comfortable in any other skate. had my trues for 2 and half years now and ill never wear another skate again honestly. ill eventually go with the full one piece goal skate but not for a while until my current skates really start breaking down.
Mako's came out in 2013, then the following year they release the Mako ll. Still have my Mako ll for the last 8 years and still holds up in great shape.

From a quick google search, looks like Easton 1500C was the first one piece boot in 2004.
I still have my SE16s but only because I stopped playing for about 10 years and only skated probably 10 times in that time. They are falling apart though.
one thing I noticed that bauer is fits more feet and can be more comfortable so why change it. If you feel inside the one piece boot is the toe cap meets the boot, inside you can feel the bump that is very uncomfortable and really risky to punch it out as there is alot of stitching there. Dont know if that hold people back but I dont fit ccm because of the one pain point and have to use bauer. Is that a one piece boot restriction ?
It’s really all just personal preference at this point. I cant wear Bauer skates for that exact same reason. There’s a bump where the toe cap meets the rest of the boot and it kills my feet.

I can’t wear Bauer as they are the wrong shape for my feet. I even had expensive top wnd customs, and there was no lateral support round the ankles. Moving to True TF9 was a revelation, my skating ability shot up. Bauer skates have almost no thermal mouldability, hence they only fit Bauer shaped feet. Friends love them.
I’ve been saying this ever since ccm put out their one piece boots. That being said I currently use ccm AS1s, but prior i had a pair of mx3, 2s pros, and 1x pros that I went back and forth with for awhile while using my as1s and I could not give you a definitive difference in 1 piece vs 2 piece. To me it’s more gimmick vs actual function.
I replaced CCM FT 470's with FT 4 pro's, and the scales tell an interesting story. The FT 470's are lighter than the FT4 pros. Some of that weight is in the heavier step steel runner, but all the same, the FT4 pro is heavier than the FT 470.
Do you have same size old ft470 and ft4 pro. Is true that Tapered ft4pro is same like D ft470, and regular ft4 pro is same like EE ft470? Is it same fit? Is any different in toe cap between ft470 and ft4pro?

Correlation does not imply causation, so I don’t know if that has anything to do with one pice boot or not, but my feet don’t do well with Bauer. Something about the foot bed just doesn’t agree with me. As a result I got plantar fasciitis. CCM one piece boot skates, however, feel amazing. I feel like the curves on the footbed that transition from heel to plantar to toe too aggressive. The smoother, rounder transitions on CCM’s footbed just agree with my feet way more. That holds true with and without experimenting with different expensive insoles.
Dr Scholls foot inserts might help. Many different types
Skates become super stiff these days. Can you do a video about lacing skates. Top eyelet open or not, loose or tight, 4th eyelet skip, laces around the skates,…. You see so many differences, but what is the best for your performance and speed or is it just personal. You can do agility test and speed tests😀
Imho whenever i see someone being limited in front flex, the first thing i do is look if they have their laces around their boots and it is almost always true. I think it's not a good idea.

Interesting. My son had the same experience with the hyperlites and ultrasonics as you. He grew up in Vapors. But could not skate comfortably in the new Hyperlites, He said they forced him on to his toes too much and he couldn't put the power down mid blade like he prefers. I had him try a set of CCM AS3 Pros last week. They were not molded to his feet. But he said those skates put him on his heels too much. So your comments reinforce that what he telling me is for real. Since I can not tell what he is feeling, just have to take his word for it. So thank you.
His hyperlites likely had the power profile steel. The PP steel had a prosharp quad zero profile that moves the pivot point back 20mm amongst other things. It likely was not the skate but the profile that he didn't like.
@@wwjohnnymaydo Hyperlites do not come with steel. So he was using the steel from his old skates that he had been using. I had the same thought.
Can you tell me why my shin muscle hurts a lot in the first 5 to 10 minutes of skating? I never had that problem before, and I don't have any health issue. I used to skate for hours 9 years ago using rented skates, but I never suffered. Since I came back with a new beginner's bouer skates, I struggle to stay on the ice for 5 minutes. My shin muscle feel really tight. 20 minutes after stopping, and I'm okay.
Each brands skate is pitched at a different angle. Sounds like you’re leaning too far forward with the Bauers. Try CCM next and see what happens.
Might just be an random thought. I think the reason why Bauer doesn't do a one-piece boot regarding the durability and mounting on the holders and they might feel the rounder bottom of the bottom of the one-piece boot is less durable or less stable platform to mount compared to one with an outsole. Just a thought would like to hear your opinions on this.
We've had to repair a few Hyperlite holders/rivets/coppers already, same with the Ultrasonic, I haven't seen a single FT4Pro or 100KPro come in need anything repair regarding the holder or it's attachment to the boot. Start improvement considering the SB4.0 and EPro holders were absolute garbage products
Easton had S15 skates back in 2007 well before the Makos...
I’ve had similar inclinations but hearing it laid out so well it’s obvious that there is no reason for Bauer to introduce a one piece skate at this time. They are not losing market share. They will release a one piece boot when they feel it will leapfrog the competition. I suspect it will be quite impressive
Why do they not make a bigger size of skate for people with bigger feet?
Ive had the ft4s for a season and i loved them, however they were destroyed after this short amount of time. The bottom of the skates were squishy, so i had to switch to bauers mach. One piece skates are great but they lose durability.
I went from CCM FT470s and Bauer 3S Pros to FT490 and although I cannot say for sure if it is the one piece construction or the stiffness, I absolutely noticed a difference and will likely stick with CCM’s one piece from now on.
what I dont get is if ccm wants a really comfortable skate, which is the most important factor is to a skate is to make the toe cap as part of the one piece. This way you dont have that annoying and uncomfortable toe cap and boot connection point which ccm fails at making that part comfortable.
its not as simple as that. there is a reason why skates are made like that today. Maybe in the future.
CCM needs some new tech. Every year it’s always the one piece boot that’s their selling point, with minor upgrades. Bauer have always been better in my opinion. Probably because they actually make changes every time they release a skate. That being said, I have tried all top end Bauer and CCM skates and nothing has compared to the TRUE customs. Having no negative space in the boot and supreme comfort is the best advantage. Great Video Chris.

Back in the early 80's I had Bauer Turbos. They were one piece but I don't think any Turbos ever played in a NHL game but I was the coolest kid in the neighborhood till they broke, lol
Personally for my fit and the way i skate bauer vapor are my favourites...i've been using 2x pro for over 2 years and i love them.
I figured this would be the reason. It’s just not noticeable enough. Especially for us beer league bums. Comfort first, what we dream as “performance” next and feel.

Manufacturer's marketing teams seem to like to describe stiffness as a performance advantage but any good race car has different suspension set ups based on the track and speeds. Softer suspension gives you better grip but decreased stability at high speed. Stiff suspension gives you good top speed stability but looses traction easier in the corners and bumps.
Skates are not cars, but you’re right, it’d be nice to know what difference boot stiffness makes. I have very stiff True skates, fantastic, but I’m a good skater.

I wear FT4’s and I can definitely tell a difference in a one piece boot. The small loss of energy in a 2pc skate is weird now when I wear my old ribcores.
I agree I have as3 pro and older ribcore titanium and I can definitely feel the difference in those high speed turns which are more stable and I feel the ice better its comparable to using a condom vs not
How do you know it is specifically because of the one piece boot and not anything else in the skates construction that is making the difference?
@@hawk12983 it’s the only thing that makes sense. 100% of your push goes into the ice Vs small amounts of energy slipping out the seams. It’s something you’d have to feel to describe but I’m not even mad they were a grand and I’m pretty cheap lol 👍🏼

Adding my comment a little late here. I really wish Bauer would bring back the Easton Mako skates. I own the Mako 2’s. I tried Bauer and CCM - their top of the line skates. I Always go back to the Mako skate. The Mako’s are like wearing comfy runners. The Mako skates energy transfer in the stride is unreal. The performance of Mako is unbeatable, Bauer, are kind of a bunch of jerks for buying Easton and discontinuing the Easton Mako line. Even years later. The Easton Mako skates are far more inferior then both Bauer and CCM skates. Bauer kind of screwed consumers when the company purchased Easton and discontinued the skates line. I really hope Bauer will bring back the Mako one day. It’s not going to hurt the Bauer line by bringing back the Makos. If anything. It will increase their profits. I see guys and ladies at the rink skating in their Mako’s they all say the same thing, “need to bring back the skate!”Easton was ahead of their time and Bauer bullied their way in and bought Easton. I still purchase Bauer products for myself and my son. I’m not bullying Bauer in anyway here, If I can start a campaign to bring back the Easton Mako. I will be the first person to buy the next generation of Makos! Hey Bauer! Bring back the Easton Makos, please!

I’ve always felt having a two piece skate gave you more options for modifications , or blades , more options , but if you have the money do whatever you want haha
I love my super light Easton's
Having recently moved from Bauer Custom to True TF9 (off the shelf), I’m not going back to Bauer. The TF9 offers almost as good a fit, at a lower price, and my edge control is much better. They also have more grip, I’ve gone from 5/8” to 1”. The only plus of the Bauer Custom is durability. After over five years of use they look a mess, but the shell and outsole are intact. I doubt the TF9 is that tough. I see more and more people in True, it wouldn’t surprise me if they made serious inroads in the market.
Please watch the video we just dropped. HZRDUS is a major upgrade from TF skates. All issues resolved and comfort/fit and performance upgraded… I sound like a TRUE rep 😂 just excited as the upgrades are major

I don’t like the colour scheme of the HZRDUS, yuck, but they might be my next skates. I paid £340 for the TF9, brand new, that’s a steal IMO. They are incredible skates, my edge control is much better, which is weird. I sound like a TRUE rep 😂.

You made a point and then countered your own point. Bauer is trying new things (other than one piece boots) like Nexus line; however, Bauer killed the Nexus line.
It would be funny if Bauer launches a one piece boot next year with a huge marketing campaign about 'their most advanced skate ever'. :-)

I went from two-piece to one-piece and the difference to me was night and day. Definitely noticed less weight and a more direct feel on the ice. To be fair, the two-piece was a nexus and those are like skating in tugboats, so maybe it depends

One piece boot construction will provide more energy transfer for exceptional skaters. See all speed skating boots - they are never going back to two piece construction. For the average player it will not amount to any significant gain.

That probably just says that Bauer has been paying more for endorsements/marketing. Thats probably a big part of how theyve got the larger market share and sales in general.
In my area (in the US) probably 3/4 of people are in Bauer although I think CCM has made an improvement there in recent years. Most of the people in CCM get theirs online and are getting them partly because cheaper. The local shop only has a token selection of CCM in stock. Thats partly because its not what sells (but also tough to sell what you dont have/cant try on), but its mostly marketing. These people arent buying bauer because its better or fits them better or like it better on the ice (they likely have never even worn CCMs. They are simply buying it because its what they think is best because of marketing and previous market share.
The new design. That holder will have more sticks stuck in games.

When it comes to the Mako skates, I don't think Bauer has the rights as Easton made them in partnership with Scott Van Horn of VH Skates and Bauer terminated that partnership when they paid for Easton. Van Horn then took his tech to True which is why True skates look so much like Makos
Easton Mako was mainly David Cruickshank. MLX skate was Scott Van Horn and David Cruickshank which lead onto the VH Skate (now True)
@@HockeyTutorialOfficial David Cruikshank owned MLX and uses the designs that Scott developed when he partnered with them in the Mako skate. The look is too similar to be anything else. Regardless Bauer may not own the patent. It all depends on whose name(s) is on the patents

This is sort of the reasoning i see, but to be fair they have made the hyperlite pretty light without using it. Then when they do go one piece boot they will be able to market it as an improvement.
If you want to buy 2 new skates per season get CCM, if u want to buy new skates every 3rd year, go Bauer.
All this discussion of one-piece vs two-piece is asinine when you never acknowledge at any point that the single most important thing in any skate is it's shape and how it fits your foot; nothing else matters before that, not 'pitch' (easily adjustable through blade profiling), not height, stiffness, etc etc, it all comes second to fit, without a proper fit the boot isn't able to perform as intended - it's why trying on every skate on the same skater isn't unbiased, it doesn't make sense. FT4Pro's fit me perfectly in the tapered volume for example, I can skate properly, effectively and safely in them; my heel and arch are locked, my foot doesn't move, there's ample tightness/pressure without discomfort, my toes feather the end of the toe box. Anything in the Vapor family in the performance fit system on the other hand either causes me extreme lace bite or considerable heel slip/midfoot movement, so I couldn't properly judge it's performance if I tried, so why do you think you can?

I don’t think a piece skate will give you any great advantage over a two piece skate. I came from a Vapor 3X to the True TF 9’s. I did notice a bit of improvement over my Vapor’s as far as performance, probably because they are a stiffer skate and are also contoured into a more forward lean. Honestly though I don’t think they will give you a measurable advantage over a player wearing a two piece skate in my honest opinion. It all comes down to how well your skate fits you and the individuals level of skating ability. I agree whole hardily with Chris. Buy the skate that fits you the best and disregard the brand name or the one your favourite player wears. If your comfortable in that skate your skating will naturally improve later on.

I don't see noticible features from bauer past 5 years or more if we are talking about a blind test. Ccm and true are already better than bauer.
And yet the majority of NHL players still wear Bauer skates, just because your not recognizing there innovations doesnt mean there not making strides in the industry, when your already at the top and I believe the longest running skate manufacture theress naturally going to be less room for improvements.
Not every idea is going to be a homerun, innovations and gimmicks come and go year in and year out but every now and then something actually sticks around and becomes a staple within the industry
Everyone can recall the hyperflex lace system bauer attempted to introduce to the market that was a clear failure but then that same year you have innovations that can seem small and almost insignificant like asymmetrical toe caps but in reality they are a huge improvement when it comes to reducing excess volume inside a skates toe area, reduction of bulk and weight, as well as aiding in performance aspects of ones skate stride... and it looks that much more appealing to the eyes as well.
Bauers quick change holders are still the best going and the preferred blade holder style by most all equipment managers.
There curv composite material arugably remains the industry standard.
And no im not just a bauer fanboy CCM has long made the best protective equipment imo, I only wear CCM prostock gloves, they're absolutely the best.
Its been great to see a resurgence of the brand in recent years, the one piece boot was a major innovation that undoubtably took the industry by storm but as the dust has settled and the initial wow factor has went away it seems its maybe not as big of a game changer as most expected it to become or initially considered it to be.
Its worth noting how the fact that after 5 years bauer hasnt released there own 1 piece boot, hasnt hurt bauer as much as its got people questioning the true innovative significance of CCMs 1 piece boot construction.
it really goes to show just how much power and sway bauer still commands in the industry... since bauer hasnt given 1 piece boots the co-signing that everyone expected would eventually happen, people have kinda stopped questiong why no 1 piece boot from bauer and shifted to questioning the technology from CCM itself... the fact that bauer didnt jump onboard the 1 piece boot train happens to be the biggest diss and invalidation of the technologoy all in one, especially when you realise that Bauer and Easton had both tried one piece boots in the past long before CCM did it...
Bauers essentially just kicking back and watching there little bother gain a little popularity from copying there style from a decade earlier.

I dont buy it. Tried a one piece True Skate. They dont feel any more responsive than my Grafs or Bauer Supremes.
The better question is why Bauer made skates with a tapered top that rises at the top and added a eyelet.... making sure you fuck up your brand new skates with your shin pads. Awesome stuff Bauer... won't be buying from you again.. ccm for the win.

I feel the biggest advantage of a two piece boot is you get tighter deeper heel lock. I may be one of the few who still prefer a two piece boot.

Here's the truth. Bauer could build a one piece boot. But right now probably doesn't see the need from a market share perspective. Why change your manufacturing methods and products if people keep buying them.

This video is BS, Bauer can't make a one piece skate because Scott Van Horne owns the patent on one piece skates. CCM skates are also not one piece, the toe cap and midsole are separate pieces. TheTrue(formerly VH) hockey skate and the Aura figure skate by True are the only skates that can be one piece and will be for the next 20 years. Bauer didn't choose to not make a one piece skate they simply can't. CCM doesn't make a one piece skate as they can't either, not sure how they get away with marketing their skates as one piece, probably because the skate isn't one piece and most people will believe anything. True is only licensing the patent on top of all this, even though they acquired VH. Don't lie to your audience, it's a bad look.

I agree, it has more to do with patents than questioning whether or not Bauer is innovating. They have their own lane they have to work in.
CCM uses the term “One Piece Boot” which I think lets them slide since they don’t call it a “one piece skate”. I’m sure their legal team had a field day making sure they were in the clear 😂😂
