The most beautiful version I have ever heard. Anne-Marie makes it look so easy with a tremendous voice that beats all the tenors. The original lyrics make it even more reverent and compelling.

One has to pay attention to the text and to be aware of the context in which the work was made public.
The text of "Minuit, chrétiens" was written around 1843 by Placide Cappeau, who was a
- republican,
- socialist,
- freemason,
- freethinker,
- anti-clerical,
Yet, the song was first interpreted only in 1847
The last stanza reads as follows :

The web magazine "Contrepoints" explains :
“[In 1848], a few months after the creation [of the song, the Second Republic was proclaimed in France].
[The song] thus resonated with the quarante-huitard* spirit , which mixed utopian socialism and social Christianity [...] An ephemeral alliance brought together the Catholic Church [...] and the young Republic, anxious to avoid the errors of the French Revolution. The priests blessed the trees of freedom."
quarante-huitard* : adjective describing all things related to the Revolution of 1848 in France.
Knowing this, I doubt that it's relevant to point out that the lyricist was this or that (the same remark applies to the composer).

My Grand-mère always called this "Cantique de Noël," although only her son, my uncle, had the voice to sing it---in English. I've never heard the whole song before, so merci beaucoup et Joyeux Noël et bonne année!

This is far from an easy Christmas carol to sing. An opera level singer like Ann-Marie MacFarlane can do it, and without a microphone. Ordinary revelers, not so much.
