On Somwhere in Time Adrian and Dave were on their prime
They definitely hit an all-time creative high on Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son. SIT is still my favourite album.

Daves wah-wah sound is second to none, he uses that effect with such taste and so fitting to his solos. Compare it to Kirk Hammet, who overuse wah 'a bit' ;) My favourite stuff from Dave with so much to choose from, would be his 2 solo sections in Powerslave, really shows both his feel for melodic slow solos as well as classic fast metal stuff.
I might be a bit late on this but my dad raised me on Iron Maiden. he’s been a maiden fan since he was a teen. Since I was born in 95’ no band has ever come close to them. Dave Murray and Adrian smith both compliment eachother so damn well having their own styles that create this amazing electric synergy. My all time favorite song and solo all together just has to be flight of icarus. My dad has videos of me at 5 years old playing the air guitar in the mirror to that song and it will forever be my absolute favorite all together

When I first seriously listened to Maiden (after discovering The Trooper and Run to the Hills on VH1) I was 8 or 9 years old and watched the Rock in Rio show. Dave just blew me away and made fall in love with the guitar. While Adrian and Janick played some badass licks (Janick adding some crazy gymnastics as well 😂), Dave was the one who, at least for me, seemed the most to pour his soul into each solo he played... Just like a blonde Jimi Hendrix haha!
Dave's playing is what got me into guitar in the first place. I will never forget listening to his solo of Rainmaker over and over again and feeling so amazed by it. Out of all the Maiden discography available to me at the time (almost 20 years ago!), for some reason this particular solo had an incredible impact on me. That's when I made the decision to pick up a guitar.

I totally understand your feeling about the Rainmaker solo. There is always that one solo or riff that hits us in a particular way...for me it was when I first heard the riff to Metal Health at 9 years old 🙂

Yes! The prophecy mentioned! Thats one of my favorite songs and probably has my favorite Bridge of any song. That one truly shows Dave’s brilliance and I’m a Janick maniac!

Dave Murray has been one of my favorite guitarists and a heavy influence. The fact that he has used Seymour Duncan Hot Rails and JB Jr pickups in his Strats for the last 20 years really exemplifies his tight sound and playing. Thanks for covering this icon!

I am a huge Maiden fan from 82 on, and I love Dave's guitar playing. He has always been my favorite guitarist. I love so many of Dave's solo's, but the two that stand out for me are the slower ones on Powerslave , and Phantom of the Opera. There are too many great solo's from Dave to name them all. What a great talent.

Dave is my favorite heavy metal guitarist ever and a huge influence. The Prophecy is also one of my very favorite Iron Maiden songs and it's pity they never play it live. Thanks once again for your awesome videos!

When I started listening to Iron Maiden and playing guitar, Dave was by far my favorite guitar player in the world. Today, though, I would say Adrian would be my number 1 choice in Iron Maiden, mostly because as I developed my playing style I started getting more and more interested in H's playing. With that said, Dave still is, as you perfectly pointed, the man who defines Maiden's sound on the six strings for me, and this video helped me feel a lot of that first pure love I had when I was 8 or 9. You are great!

Loving your channel! Not only do you nail the songs (both notes and feel), but you nail the tones also. In the description it looks like you are using Bias FX 2. Maybe you could do a video pointing out what frequencies and gain structures (along with effects) you dialed in and how similar or different Adrians and Dave’s sounds are (Janick in later albums). Some of my favorite Maiden sounds were on Somewhere In Time and 7th Son of A Seventh Son when they were using solid state Gallien Krueger amps. Those seemed to automatically give that upper midrange push and the solos seemed to jump out of the speakers.

Most of the time I am using one of two presets: either a slightly modified version of the stock Captain Mark preset or another which is similar but using a different amp. Both are available for download in the Bias tonecloud. Just lookup Licks of the Beast. 🙂
I don't really try to get exact tone matching of either guitarist because their sounds vary from album to album and it would be impossible with just a plugin and my limited knowledge anyway. And I love those late 80s GK tones they were getting too! They were so unique and SIT is still my all-time favourite album 🤘
I'm a big fan of his solo in Strange World. It's just beautiful! There's so many though isn't there? Powerslave springs to mind also and I personally really enjoy his solo for Benjamin Breeg in terms of "later" material. I love his spontaneity live too. Never quite know what you're going to get and he literally looks like he has nothing but sheer enjoyment from start to finish of every gig. I'm so disappointed he has no credits on Senjutsu, but, that's Davey for you. Sporadic, but, always so worth the wait between his songs. Awesome video as always man. Keep up the great content!

Out of all the members in Iron Maiden, Dave Murray is the one I take the most influence as a guitarist, which is funny since I use a Jackson SDX Adrian Smith as my main guitar next to an ESP Explorer copy.

Murray said that Sabbath, JP, and Deep Purple were the bands who inspired him the most. So most likely Ritchie Blackmore as it was for Janick Gers.

What pickups are you using?
To be honest I think that Iron Maiden lost the tone quality when Adrian left the band. It was such an improvement to hear him back on Brave New World.
Adrian leaving was a big loss for sure. I mean...I still remember the exact moment when I found out he'd left! I think the sound of No Prayer was more a question of them recording it quickly in a barn. I love that album but the sound could have been a little fatter and richer for sure. Fear of the Dark was an improvement but the two albums that followed definitely had weaker production and the guitar tone was kinda flat. Not sure how much of that was due to Adrian's absence and how much was due to the lack of the right producer because Adrian's return coincided with the arrival of Kevin Shirley at the helm. My guess is a bit of both 🙂
@@LicksOfTheBeast Agreed 100 percent. I think the majority of Maiden fans are quick to blame Janick for the sound of those records in question. A proper producer would have definitely made a big difference. I find the production on X Factor to be so bad it makes the record almost unlistenable. Anyways, I enjoy your channel.
@@toddgarber988 Yeah the sound on X Factor is a little too dull... I get that they were going for a dark vibe but it ended up sounding a bit flat in the end. It's unfortunate because there are some solid songs on there!

what is the color of your strat? vintage white-ish? i love that thing
It's called Honey Blonde. It really is a nice color and it's fairly easy to find used Fenders in that shade. ☺️
does dave use any alternate picking in his solos? I have been focusing on legato alot these past few months and I am finding it is easier than alternate picking I know both are important.
Rarely. He will do some tremolo picked runs with open strings like on Killers and Afraid To Shoot Strangers, but most of his soloing is legato. Adrian does some pretty cool picked bits and Janick does some pretty crazy picking sometimes!
What bridge de you have in that strat? Been wondering that for a while now 😂
It's a Mini Floyd Rose. They came stock with some Deluxe strats in the mid to late 90s. Too bad they didn't continue using them because I think it's an awesome bridge!
Dave Murray is way the best with his STRATO, apart from Yngwie Malmsteen and Jimmi Hendrix.
