Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Ian Gillan, Jon Lord (Deep Purple) & Nicko McBrain In Studio

- On 7th December 1988, Armenia was struck by a devastating earthquake. In response to the tragedy, the biggest names in rock recorded an all-star cover of Deep Purple classic Smoke on The Water to raise funds for the stricken region. Twenty years after the Armenian earthquake, Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan and Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi visited Armenia again and were deeply affected by the passion of the young students of a music school in Gyumri that had never been properly restored since the earthquake shattered the city. To raise funds to build a new music school, Iommi and Gillan formed Who Cares and wrote and recorded a new song “Out of My Mind" for the kids of Armenia. They assembled an all-star lineup at the iconic SARM studios in 2010. Participating artists included Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain on drums, legendary Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord and iconic bassist Jason Newsted (who recorded remotely). This film captures moments from that day in the studio, one of the legendary Lord’s last ever filmed recording sessions. It also features Queen's Brian May reflecting on the significance of Smoke On The Water.

😊
yes.....jon and tony
Yes .! Amazing
Jon Lord was an amazing keyboardist nobody can match his talent and nobody rocks the organ like he did.
Have you ever heard of Keith Emerson NOBODY has ever come close to matching his genius talent and if you don’t believe that then you have not listened to ELP .
@@robertpatterson3406 what about Rick Wakeman? Or Jordan Rudess of dream theater
RoboWizard I do like Rick but he is no Keith Emerson and as forJordan I have really never heard him perform so I can’t speak about him .
@@robertpatterson3406 i like keith emerson, but I find that the stuff he writes is just trying to be difficult as possible, whereas he could write something more melodic and less difficult. Playing the hardest thing possible to me isn't being the best keyboard player
He was from another planet and came back there 😞
Anybody else get chills when Jon just started messing around on the Hammond? RIP Jon.
Almost got dizzy from the camera work during this scene. Annoying.
to me, it's when Ian met Jon that made me burst into tears bc we would never get to see them together again after Jon passed away
What an amazing gift he was. I am such a huge fan of his. His talent, his class. When he died I I wanted my hair just like Jon's. Today I have it. It's not all silver yet but I wear it as he does in this video. We miss you Jon!!
Yep! Epic
I most certainly did!

Watching Jon Lord playing gives me goosebumps and that fact tells me how much I miss this persona…
I was lucky to see all these guys in my lifetime, and I do remember seeing Lord litterely rock the keyboard back and forth while doing a solo. It was a sight to behold.
How refreshing to see four real legends with no egos simply doing great work. RIP Jon Lord gentleman rocker.
Ian Gillan "NO ego?" Laughable.....just ask Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale how Gillan treated (and talked about them behind their backs) at RRHOF ceremony. I really wish Blackmore would have showed up and put Gillan in his place....
Any video footage of these guy's from early up to now is TREASURE....
@@steveludwig4200Glenn Hughes IS a very talented musicien but suite crazy AT that time.coverdale more or less as well.anyway thèse guys are giants
No ego? Are you serious?
I’ve met Nicko many times in rehearsal studios, he’s a great bloke.
I was playing around my kit waiting for the rest of the band to arrive and he came in, he made me a cup of tea and said “how in earth are you doing that pattern with your feet”. At the end of the day we did a drum duet together - it was sooo cool!
I was lucky enough to spend over an hour chatting with Ian Gillan in the early 80's when I was security at the Glasgow Apollo, he was an utter Gent, we talked about everything!! we could have spent longer but we had to lock the place up !!! total respect for Ian will never forget that time I had with him.
Jon Lord was absolutely fantastic!
Seeing these four legends greet each other like they did....... such humility. RIP Jon Lord, You are sorely missed Sir 🙏
It was really nice to see
Jon was such a humble monster on the "Beast"
RIP
@Star Rider JON*
@Star Rider A few more English bands and it would be called an invasion of Armenia, lol
It was so warm and i got feeling, that they really are true friends.
Jon Lord mastered the Hammond, Best keyboard player I’ve seen in my life ❤️🙏Godspeed my friend...
What a great world, in which Jon Lord calmly enters the studio where Tony Iommi and other great musicians are already. And then - Ian Gillan. This is amazing world.
I've just realised how much Jon lords name suits everything he does like a guy with white hair and beard in a black suit who plays something as brilliant as that deserves the name of Jon lord
I've never met a more regal human. An absolute gentleman.
It was so great to see John Lord once again God bless him he is the greatest organ/keyboard player in rock history he is sorely missed I will never go see purple again without him or without Blackmore
Well a lot of people say Keith Emerson is the best keyboard player ever

Born Again is an amazing album that Tony Iommi and Ian Gillian with the rest of Black Sabbath did back in the early 80's. I love that they got Jon Lord, Nicko Mcbrain , and Jason Newsted to record a new song to help Armenian people from the devastating earthquake they had back in 1988. I am a huge fan of all these guys respective bands.
One of my biggest regrets is not buying a ticket for the born again tour . I was 11 & just starting to attend concerts . I failed in not going . Good to see toni & ian collaborating years later .. aswell with the other great musicians .
Got a vinal copy of that one of my favorite non Ozzy black Sabbath albums
dude, while visiting my Gma in Juarez, I bought this album (like $3 back in the day) when I was a teenager, and I was amazed by the album cover so I thought , fk it just buy it....
when my Gma asked me, "what did you buy my child?" I showed her the cover and she freaked out, she asked me, "why do you buy satanic stuff like this?" I just shrugged
I dont care what ANYBODY says Tony Iommi with Ian Gillan is a DANGEROUS combination.Iommi is incredible with anyone really but Ian is an unbelievably great singer too
Iommi is the KING of Heavy Riffs.
That is why Born Again is such a fine album.
@@joweerocks
And incredible grooves.
@@snakeknife7518 Agreed. Born Again is criminally underrated. Saw them live on that tour. Great show.
Yeah, listen to Zero the hero by Sabbath, that is a perfect fusion of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple's mk.2 with Gillan.
Jon Lord a true Trailblazer, made a few generations love his sound, imagine Deep Purple without him ... No Purple.
Just showed my wife in her early 30's She was a small child in New Hampshire when this happened. She's 3rd gen American and 100% Armenian. Her parents church did a lot of fundraising and helping the victims of the earthquake. Her parents took in two teenagers from the quake and stayed with them a few weeks. She was real happy to have learned about this project, being a somewhat recent Maiden fan.
Iommi is the king Midas of guitar, every single riff he writes is pure gold.
His brain is something unique. Which produces something different that we can think. I have seen many skilled guitarists. They just skilled and memories those techniques and modes Arpeggios etc and keep on playing fast unnecessary to show their skill. But at the end that doesn't make sense because every guitarist can do that. But what Toni produces is out of the box. It's beyond imagination.

"I want it to growl a bit more" and then we hear the distinct Hammond sounds of Deep Purple. Oh Jon you're an absolute legend and are truly missed
he cold bias the tubes to make it distort
Great team of chaps! Makes one proud to be British. No bull, no egos just total respect and enthusiasm...
Even with only the first few chords and the first few phrases there is no mistaking that Hammond,- a surge of emotion runs through you and you feel like you´ve come home.
Unbelievable player and musician he was.
Rest in peace Maestro,- you are surely and sorely missed.
Really no words to describe the musicianship here!
Jon Lord we miss you.
Rest in Peace, Mister Jon Lord...MAESTRO.
Tony Iommi is such a cool a classy and unselfish guy !! man I’d love to jam with him!!
Brian May has to be one of the nicest people on earth , absolutely brilliant guitar player with a tone to die for , Chris Squire another true gentleman I'm so glad I got to see him on his last tour with yes , they played the whole close to the edge and fragile album , and about five other great songs , I wish I would have seen him the year before 2 because they played the Yes album fragile and close to the edge all the way through , all those musicians are great, I'm fortunate to have seen every one of them that was mentioned live in concert . I saw Iron Maiden in 1982 , Nico was not yet on the drums but I saw him in the 90s with Iron Maiden , I saw Queen in 1982, Deep Purple I saw in 1984 , Metallica I saw with Guns and Roses in 1992 , I saw Yes in 1992 and I believe 2014 I would have to look at my ticket stub , the 2014 was far better than the 1992 Union tour there was just too many people on stage I thought,, and I can't forget about David Gilmour I saw Pink Floyd 1989 on the momentary lapse of Reason tour
Gentlemen, as an Armenian I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you've done of Armenia. As a fan, I thank you for your music. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden are my favorite bands since my teen years in 80s. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What a real heartfelt and genuine meeting of rock legends, and it is great to hear that nice gentle voice from Jon Lord.
ВЕЛИКИЕ!!!! И поступки такие же! СПАСИБО!!!!!!
Jon Lord, the best Hammond Organ player ever. He's what truly made Deep Purple unique. He was the one that created true Classic Rock. His classical elements in Rock music are unmatched to this day and probably will remain unmatched.
In case you didn't know, Jon had his Hammond organ modified, so he was able to play over a Marshall stack as well.
That's why the duel's between Ritchie and Jon sounded so epic.
@@markschattefor6997 wow big "modification" plugging in the output jack. i like lord but get real on "best hammond player"
crabtrap name one then
@@andybell9245 Emersion Lake and Palmer. Organist was much better.
@@crabtrap actually Lord first wired the preamp stage of the hammond directly into the Marshall, not an output jack. it was an innovation that had never been done before. Many of the sounds and chords on Peurple tracks that peiple think were from Blackmore are actually from Lord on the hammond. I liked Keith Emerson (Emersion? haha) but Lord had for more musicality in his playing, and a very strong jazz and blues background.
As an Armenian who happens to be a metalhead words can’t describe how grateful I am for your humanitarian efforts! Thank you! Armenians love you for your music but more importantly for the great people you are!

Wow, Ian Gillan still sounds great!, very cool vocals, love Iommi, Nicko, and Jason here as well.
My one regret as a fan was we didn't get a second Black Sabbath album and tour with Ian Gillan, that Born Again album and tour was criminally underrated.
Kevin Lake AGREED!!!
I saw the Born Again tour with Ian Gillan, in Phoenix, it was really good. Ian still sounds cool.
Very original music they made,
Probably the most evil sounding Sabbath album since the first one was Born Again. Think it just suffered from a bad mix originally. Remasters are a little bit better.
Sabbath are not sabbath without ozzy. Same goes for bill ward.
Siempre me encantó la personalidad de Tony Iommi,
Todos juntos reunidos son unos maestros un honor ser fan de Iron Maiden y tener a Nicko entre las alineaciones de este proyecto.

So Queen, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden... Incredible.
That’s absolutely sick to see those legends vibe up that way! A bit sad Jason couldn’t join. World would be a better place with such a spirit 💪
Mr. Tony Iommi, the riff master
No mate, that title belongs to Mr Ritchie Blackmore. No point arguing because I'm right.
@@CB-xr1eg no disrespect to Blackmore but Iommi has far better rhythm riffs. Both awesome for different reasons for sure. Blackmore has amazing leading skills, but I'm sorry dude. There is only one riff master and that ain't Ritchie... Tony Iommi. Just for sheer influence alone should be enough plus his ability to churn out memorable riffs for over 40 years, that incredible guitar sound, overcoming a severe physical handicap and still be an amazing guitarist...Iommi is really in a class by himself. Also, tone wise Tony's guitar tone is miles heavier... Symptom of the universe... Enough said...
I don't know why anybody argues this. Blackmore and Iommi both have years of great riffs. Neither takes away from the other. Page, either. They're all great. Nothing to argue.
@@ultimatemetalguitartones I agree with mostly everything you said, but you gotta admit that Iommi can play amazing solos as well
