As I go through cancer treatment just before reaching 40 years old, this video really hits home. Enjoy the journey indeed, most people get anxious, angry or give importance to things that in the end don't really matter. On that note, I am going to buy myself a hockey ball (a soft one, thanks for reminding me how much the hard ones hurt Shannon), get my old Nike graphite stick from my mom's garage and just have fun shooting it against the wall of the school next to my home, people may judge me, but in that moment, wearing one my jerseys (probably Caufield even though I am 6'2''), I'll be scoring a winning OT goal in my head once again, just like when I was 12 and I'll be happy, people may look at me and thin I'm weird, their problem, not mine. I'm just happy my prognosis is good enough that I get to enjoy another year (and probably many, many more) of hockey surrounded by my loved ones, my hockey jerseys, my cat and my teddies. Now, I need to get back to my garden and flowers, they need some love and that matters more than drama fans have over whatever is happening in the NHL.

I've been meaning to do the same thing: just grab a stick and shoot. I even went out to the old oudoor regulation rink hoping it was still in shape. I think all of us kinda got lost in life and forgot the things that made life worth living in our youth. Nobody's been out for 10 or more years and the rink is just gone, really. Time to find a little piece of what was and enjoy what we can, before it fades completely. I hope your treaments go smoothly, and since we're the same age(alias aside) maybe we can take some shots together and laugh at each other for being a couple of old farts.

@@abrahamlincoln9758 people who are 60 say we are still young, but when you I look back, I feel I'm old. Maybe it's just as Shannon says, it really is about how we feel . Maybe we can be greedy and get the best of both worlds, enjoy the magic of the moments when our imagination ran wild and we could see ourselves scoring the ot winner in a game 7 of the SCF while taking a good shot in the alley and, at the same time not feeling that anxious to perform. As for shooting balls or pucks together I'd love too but I fear we may not be close to each other, I'm in Quebec :) Last but not least, ty for wishing my treatments go well, my doctors say it is and I will meet my grandkids, i still don't have kids of my own but I'm working on it, so I have many more years shooting balls and pucks ahead of me, and you too, hopefully.

Hello from Montreal, thanks for sharing what I did as a kid. Being outdoors playing road hockey in all weather on the south shore of Montreal. There was a rink at the top of my street and we wore that ice out. All the kids came out we made two teams, we made our own nets, kids made their own goalie equipment. There is no doubt that playing makes you a better player. Like you, soccer was played in the summer. I did end up playing competitive hockey and soccer until the body wore out. As kids that what we did, being outdoors playing some kind of sport. Great memories as you say being part of the Canadian culture.
FYI we used a tennis ball and some time a sponge puck was used but the tennis ball would roll over the snowy ice and was safer. I wish I could go back to 1975 as a ten year old.
I see in the comments that some people have been recovering from cancer, l wish them a speedy recovery. All the best

It seems like no matter how old you are, any of us could live our last day and not know it, so we might as well do the most we can each day to make an impact. I especially loved hearing your story about teaching the players younger than you something about the game, even if it was just for fun.

Right there with you about being a short guy (5'6") who couldn't play sports that well. I also have spina bifida (but can walk), and there were no hockey teams for people like me in the early 90s when my fandom really got going. I got to play a little street hockey, though. I had a pretty good shot, but nothing more. I used to do play by play when everyone else would play street hockey.
So I got into competitive swimming, but disabled swimming was more geared for people with cerebral palsy, so when they classified me, I always ended up competing against people who could somewhat kick, and I never could. It got so frustrating and after I set a few provincial records and went to Paralympic Trials, I was seeing a girl at the time and gave it up to spend more time with her. She left about a year after that. I haven't had a steady relationship since.
I don't judge people who aren't fantastic and just do activities for the pure enjoyment of it. I get it. But when you talk about your struggles with depression in the past, I completely identify. I also had an abusive parent who destroyed my life and made so many bad choices on my behalf that when he finally passed away 3 years ago, there was nothing left for me. This channel has helped me get through some really difficult times. So for that, thank you.

I grew up in LA during the Gretzky era and never played but always loved the game. I played baseball but followed the Kings during that magical ‘93 run. I don’t understand why people would look down on street hockey - whether you play full bore like my son or just watch and couldn’t skate a lick like me - does it really matter? My career took me to Boston so of all the spots and sports my son could have played I’m super happy he wanted to play hockey - so many good friends and people in the sport. Really like videos like this where you just talk about things not related to whats going on in Hockey. You can make paint dry interesting my man.

Mock? I sat in envious astonishment at them. I wish I could move like that. I'm only a wee bit older than you and I couldn't run 5 steps. I *feel* like I could, I used to cycle 30km per day at least, but I now find it a struggle to push the bike out of the shed. You're right to be proud of remaining active, because the moment you stop, getting back is almost impossible

Great great post. You hit it out of the park. 35 years ago I started a ball hockey game twice a week 3 on 3 old school pick teams. Almost no one played organized ice hockey. Best two days of the week. You have a standing invitation to join the ‘gym of dreams’. North Van.

Some of my fondest memories of street hockey are from when the street was icy. Didn’t matter how good or average you were, it levelled the playing field as everybody was just slipping around, spinning their wheels and wiping out all over the place, laughing their ass off.

Here in Switzerland we often play street hockey with a orange ball nicknamed 'Canadian ball', was wondering if it was really a thing in Canada...
