🎥 In this video, I want to examine the real, proper Dutch accent. What is REAL Dutch? And do I speak real Dutch? Am I even Dutch...???!!! ;-) So, I am going to make a zoom call with a professor (who's a linguist) who can finally enlighten me on what real Dutch actually is.
In deze video wil ik graag onderzoeken wat nou het echte Nederlands en wat het echte Nederlandse accent is. En spreek ik wel écht Nederlands? Ben ik wel Nederlands...!?!!? ;-)

Kim , A more relevant point to make for the beginners or even early intermediate Dutc students is that instead of an authentic Dutch person they are better of being taught by an Anglophone whose second language is Dutch. Newcomers to any language are far better off speaking to those who are also newcomers. Their level of familairity with the language matches well and they are best suited for each other. In dealing with the authentic language speakers of any language the newcomers face a huge gulf of fluency. Additionally it matters most if the person is great teacher which Kim you really are given your enthusiasm, talents and qualifications. So I would not hold the point of you not being British person with Dutch language skills. You are suberb and given that I watch videos in some 20 langauges I can bestow the honor of the best youtube videos on a language upon you. Congratulations!

The problem is that you speak Dutch with a sort of English accent. Most people (in de randstad) speak Dutch in a more flat way (platter).
People should be just grateful for the work you are doing...for free!

Who dares to say that your Dutch is not real... OMG.. I'm living in Belgium but I understand more Dutch from the Netherlands, than this Dutch from Belgium...
And I think your pronunciation and your accent is so perfect and understandable, I think you are the best teacher and I like your expressions... that is a good motivations to learn Dutch.

The question of whether Kim' Dutch is authentic would first require defining what is real Dutch and that would not be a simple undertaking any way . When we dont even have metric how can be make firm conclusions? All that matters is Kim is superb at what she generates, She is execptionally multi talented woman a borderline genius. I don't know why this video got recommended, but here's my interpretation.
Dutch people hear there is *something* different in the way you speak. Being very direct, they ask you what it is they are hearing. There definitely is *something*, but it's not a bad thing. I'd think it's that you enunciate with more deliberation than most people ever would, which usually only occurs when you've spend a lot of time speaking a different language and have to continuously overcome this. However, this is the very thing you'd want in a foreign language teacher. Your way of speaking really allows learners to distinguish every individual word. The only other people I've ever met who spoke remotely similar were also teachers: One was a vocal coach, one taught literature and the other taught a specific area of the law.

I really like how you handled this. Sometimes it’s easy to get really hung up on accents when learning or speaking languages. I speak Dutch with a Surinamese accent and French with a more rural one, and I believe we shouldn’t question the validity of different accents. For some people, their accent is their history or their culture. Differences don’t make a dialect or accent less “real”(whatever that means). We all speak differently to some extent and that is perfectly fine

Just a suggestion ... with youtube you can change the playback speed. I usually play her videos a bit faster x 1.25. But if you need them a bit slower you can change to x 0.75 . Probably for most people the standard speed is just right. That works on all youtube videos. ... Like Goldilocks you can find which one is just right for you. I personally like her videos!

@@tmaldri I honestly can’t stand slowed down speech (I however do see how it can benefit people, I’m just not into it), so I watched this at 1.75x speed. Surprisingly I can understand 98% at this speed.

Mooi Nederlands hoor, maar wel met wat een Gooise R wordt genoemd die op de Engelse R lijkt. Dat hoor je veel in de Randstad en is geen stabdaard Nederlands. Beter om de rollende R te gebruiken of de keel-R.

Really appreciate this video! Ik ben Nederlands maar in Engeland opgegroeit, en ben een paar keer verteld dat mijn nederlands "heel goed is voor een engelser" of dat ik niet eigenlijk nederlands ben omdat ik geen sterk accent heb... maar met een texelse opa, een zeeuwse oma, een schotse vader, en engelse vrienden, verbaasd het me niet dat ik geen sterk accent heb (of dat mijn nederlands niet perfekt is) !

Luisteren naar een gesprek is vaak niet luisteren naar alle woorden. Wanneer je een taal goed beheerst of wanneer het je moedertaal is, heb je vaak niet alle woorden nodig om het gesprek te volgen. De rest kan je wel raden. Beheers je een taal minder, dan moet je meer woorden uit een gesprek begrijpen om het gesprek te kunnen volgen.
That's basically my daily struggle of learning Dutch, especially the listening part. I can understand the content from the TV news pretty well, because they speak quite clear and most importantly very standard Dutch. But when it comes to daily life, I immediately got lost from people who speaks super fast and has an "unique" accent. And most of the time, they don't think they have an accent. LOL

Ik leer Nederlands met Duolingo en ik gebruik een harde "g" maar Duolingo een zacht "g" geburikt. U video gemaakt mij voel beter op mijn accent! Dank u!
Dear Kim, my paternal grandfather was from Leiden and spoke with a similar "American" accent like you do. Actually the oldschool "Leidse R" is, like the American "R" also used at the beginning of a word and in that sense different from the "Gooische R". In the early 80's, the comedy band Rubberen Robbie sang in Leiden dialect.

Ik en alle mensen met een minimum aan begrip weten dat je Nederlands bent, je spreekt langzaam zodat we u kunnen verstaan , en we weten dat je veel tijd besteedt aan het maken van een video voor ons, dus alsjeblieft kijk niet naar de gekke commentaar.
We komen hier allemaal binnen om Nederlands te leren, er is geen taalexpert onder ons om het recht te hebben om zijn mening te geven, want de taalexpert komt hier niet om video's te kijken, hij heeft een andere baan, iedereen die naar je video's kijkt zijn mensen die het nodig hebben om de taal te leren.

Leuke video! Jammer dat ik je kanaal niet eerder ontdekt heb. Ik zal je video's zeker gaan delen met mijn eigen NT2-studenten in België die altijd in paniek schieten als ze Nederlands uit Nederland horen. Ik denk dat jouw video's een goede 'tussenstap' voor hen zullen zijn om eraan te wennen. Je hebt trouwens inderdaad een niet te plaatsen accent. Invloed van Amerikaanse (r) of Arabische accenten(aa) van je cursisten misschien? Omdat ik zelf veel met Franstaligen werk is mijn oorspronkelijke accent inmiddels ook sterk vervormd. Het klinkt nergens meer naar! Maar dat hoort bij het vak denk ik ;) Bedankt! Ga vooral zo door!

Between German Flemish Frisian Dutch etc there is such a fluid gradient of accents and language transition that distinction of what is being spoken is bound to get blurred. That would tend to drive the newcomers to these languages pretty crazy.

Loved this video. The thing that most impressed me is how you can say "g" like a Belgian! I eventually learned to say a hard "g". But then the first time I watched a Belgian TV show, I was like "what is this?" Now I enjoy the differences in accents.

To be honest you sound like me, I am bilingual, I speak English and Dutch fluently. To me my dutch doesn't sound like other Dutch peoples. There is always a hint of English running through my Dutch just like yours does.

This is how it's sounds to me. Dutch with an English touch. Maybe it is normal for a specific region in The Netherlands. I don't know.
@@Dutch-Guy460 the Randstad where there are lots of English speaking people and international schools means that contact with English is greater than elsewhere, also now with International Netflix etc even more consumption of English language pieces of spoken word.

Ik heb door Vlaams Nederlands geleerd op UA-cam omdat ik Vlaamse sprekers vind makkelijker om te verstaan.
Maar leer ik nu door u kanaal omdat u spreekt heel langzaam en soms verduidelijkt u in het Engels en dus ik vind het ook makkelijker om to verstaan.

Hallo Kim, In het begin, dacht ik, eerlijk gezegd wel, dat is vast een docente die hier (bijvoorbeeld, vanuit de VS) in Nederland terecht is gekomen en zich inmiddels heel goed heeft bekwaamd in het Nederlands. Door al haar kennis wil ze kennelijk nu anderstaligen op een leuke en originele manier (verder) wegwijs maken in het Nederlands en onze gebruiken. Hoe leuk is dat! (Zo realiseren Nederlanders, zichzelf niet dat we in de spreektaal vaak van die verkorte
vormen van bepaalde woorden gebruiken en wat het betekent als we bepaalde gebaren gebruiken in bepaalde situaties, bijvoorbeeld als we 'duimen' om voorspoed af te dwingen).
Nu realiseer ik me dat hoe of je in je video’s spreekt mogelijk soms iets anders klinkt, omdat je dan een langzamer spreektempo aanhoudt, hetgeen me logisch lijkt. Heel leuk allemaal om zo - via jouw video's- een en ander verder mee te krijgen want je gaat zelf met andere ogen naar je (eigen) taal en land kijken en dan kun je ook hierop reflecteren .
Ik ben zelf Nederlands en leer bijvoorbeeld al enige jaren (Europees) Portugees omdat mijn man en ik een kleine ruïne hebben gekocht om op te knappen hebben in het Noorden van Portugal. Onze online docente in de Portugese taal ondertitelt haar video's om ons, als haar studenten, toch bloot te stellen aan het normale spreektempo. Echter, het blijft een lastige balans omdat je, als docent, denk ik, ook wilt dat je studenten begrijpen wat of je zegt.
Dus ga vooral op zo'n leuke, orginele en enthousiaste manier (en met zoveel zelfspot) door, en het zogenaamde 'echte Nederlands' bestaat inderdaad niet, denk ik! (En als je soms ziet hoe we zelf Nederlands spreken dan kunnen we, volgens mij, nog wat leren van je gemotiveerde studenten en jou!).
Dank je wel! Wat een leuk en lief bericht! En het is inderdaad soms een moeilijke kwestie qua spreektempo. Normaliter, als ik studenten heb die al wat gevorderder zijn, spreek ik een stuk sneller. Maar omdat hier op UA-cam alle niveaus uiteen lopen, heb ik ervoor gekozen altijd toch wat langzamer en duidelijker te praten zodat ook studenten die beginnen me makkelijker kunnen volgen ☺️

Nederlanders zouden moeten begrijpen dat je juist langzaam en duidelijk articuleert, zodat mensen die Nederlands leren te spreken je begrijpen. Maar het inlevingsvermogen van sommige Nederlanders is ver te zoeken :)
Ook heel goed dat je aangeeft dat het Standaardnederlands een keuze is geweest van mensen en dat er eigenlijk geen rangorde bestaat van dialecten/accenten. Ikzelf vind het geweldig dat er op zo'n klein oppervlak een keur aan accenten is. Amsterdams, Rotterdams en Haags: elk heeft zijn eigen charme! Ik moet ook eerlijk zeggen dat ik wel blij ben als er ondertiteling is bij Limburgs of Drenths, omdat ik het dan echt niet kan verstaan. Maar dat vind ik juist mooi, dat ik het niet kan verstaan :)

What I wanna know is when it comes to cartoons dubbed in Dutch, most of the time it’s gonna Dutch Dutch but only if it’s something like a Disney animated movie only THEN do ya get Flemish Dutch! What’s the crack with that?! 😝😝😝😂😂😂 I can easily explain why Thomas and Friends just HAS to have an American English dub as well as a British English dub! ;) Because those Americans don’t full understand and appreciate how we English talk! 😝 I.E “Trucks” being “Cars”! Oh, oh! In Kirby’s Epic Yarn for the Wii, there’s a British English narrator and an American English narrator depending where you come from! XD For Spanish cartoons and games, you almost always have to have European Spanish and South American Spanish! XD
I'm Canadian and need English closed captioning on to understand Coronation Street when I watch it 😆 Can't understand a thing they are saying without it!!

Großes Sorry, Ich bin zwar irgendwas mit Deutsch. Ich fand Deinen Beitrag richtig geil! Für mich, ich kann die Sprache nur sehr bedingt sprechen. Aber meinen Akzent würde man immer hören :) Wobei mir vor Ort schon aufgefallen war, das nicht nur ein Dialekt in den Niederlanden gegeben ist. Am schlimmsten war es, als ich auf einer Baustelle in Rotterdam war. Da kamen alle anderen von überall her. - Wir haben uns aber trotz allem gut verstanden.
Je hebt goed penalties gegeven voor die mensen 😭😭
En ik vind de video leuk ,omdat het over geschiedenis van dialecten gaat.
