- Watch as I try to trim TipToe's beak for the first time ON MY OWN! I'll be attempting some fun little techniques from the vet to make sure this big boy is looking handsome. Will my 175lb tortoise make this process smooth and easy, or will I have to call for backup?

What a star, I love the way he heads straight for the camera for his close up... it might be a daily process, so he gets used to the noise and the feeling of the file.

Do you take him to where he is with others like him where he gets playmates? Does he interact well with other tortoises?
Your such a great provider for Tiptoe and it's a given he loves you!
Cait you did a great job. You think about everything pertaining to his thoughts and movements and adjust your stratagies based on that. Because you know him very well 19 yrs well and you know what he will do to that drill and what it can do to him. Safety is always number one. You'll get it done maybe not all at once but you know it will happen and it's not in desperate need... Keeping Tiptoes smile extra happy... So funny Grace was like urmm Ma I can help I promise I can do zoomies and distract T while you get his mouth.... LOL

Just curious: in the wild, what would be happening? Would his beak be wearing down naturally due to grazing?
Second question: what would be the downside of not trimming TT’s beak? (Would it impede his ability to eat?)
That's a great question -- typically they are able to naturally shave their beaks down by eating from the ground. Tiptoe had a pretty nasty chip a few years ago that gave him two "fangs". I was getting worried that he would catch a fang on something and it would chip his beak again

Congratulations on a successful trim. It's definitely not easy and you gotta work on their time, with whatever room they give you. Your dad made out like a pro! I know Tip toe is thankful. He's gonna need an extra spa day. ⛱️🐢🌴

Tiptoe is no fool. Sure he wanted the flower, but he knew it was a trick to dremel his beak. So he waited until you turned it off and it was safe.

That reminds me of trying to clip my dogs toenails, my dog was such a drama queen! My dog had a toy which was just a solid rubber ring, maybe that'd work better than tape for the future? It's a struggle being a pet parent x

Caitlin , there is a white stone for birds that helps with their beaks and I have seen garden state tortoise use that with his turtles to keep their choppers good.

Forgot to mention, if you do the foam nail file method, Tiptoe does not have to open his mouth. Just place the nail file gentle under his top beak while holding his head and glide it gently with very minimum pressure as you would file your nails.

He’s getting so many “free” berries and flowers! Can tortoises do clicker training? He could get a click and a Berry every time the dremel touches his beak. You could also use flowers and strawberries to teach him to push his head into your hand, if you can do that with a tortoise. They are so very intelligent, but who knows what they’re capable of learning, and how they learn?

As a woodcarver and a Sulcata owner this is a good idea but the dremel and dog nail grinder get hot with friction I'm going to try it in short intervals.

I think standing over him is a better way as you have a little more control. Is this something that has to be done on a regular basis? I bet you guys didn't know what you were getting yourselves into when you got this pet from Santa all those years ago. But Kudos to you and your family for hanging in there with all those challenges that caring for this pet has entailed. Glad you have a vet you can take him to should an emergency arise or for that yearly checkup. I bet he has a lot of fans. He's quite personable for a tortoise which makes him fun to watch. He's 175 lbs and that's pretty heavy if he should step on your toe. We have a 170 lb Great Dane that is on a Weight Management food due to his weight gain and when he steps on my toe, I know it immediately. Thank you for sharing your videos. I love how you have added heat to his pool water. Thank you again for your lovely videos. The best to you and yours!
Standing over him was definitely the best way to do it. This is only our second time trimming his beak (he chipped it significantly 2 years ago trying to eat a rock) so this was just a little cleanup. Oh yeah I have a wicked mark on my foot from Tiptoe's continuous weight on it. A 170 lb Great Dane must be the best!! That's a big ole baby
@@caitlinandtiptoe Actually he is a baby in a way. He has this unique habit of balling up his blankets and sort of suck on them. And if it looks like you are going to put away his blankets, he runs over and grabs them one by one and carries them into the front parlor and lays across them so that you can't get them. We only let him have three at a time and this way he always has clean blankets. When you see he makes little holes in them, it's time to replace them with new blankets. Since he gained so much weight, we had to replace his cookies with rice cakes and he really likes them now. Our Vet said to try and keep his weight at 150, easier said than done, but he's getting better so hopefully by the summer he should be there. He's just three this year so he's got plenty of time to get his weight down and suck more blankets.
I wonder if her parents realized they were actually choosing their first grandson all those years ago,not buying a pet lol 😂

How long did this take? I’m sure it was lengthy process because you have to have a lot of patience in order to not stress him out too much.
I seen a show somewhere in England that had a free roaming turtle in the backyard. A woman came to visit them with red toe nail polish 💅 & as they were talking the turtle bit her toe 😂
Tiptoe loves to wiggle his bottom when his shell is scratched and he scratches himself on bushes and grass. Would love to see a video about all the ways Tiptoe does the 'shimmy'. We have seen clips of him dancing but it was never enough... :)

Definitely loving your little big friend. But for future file downs, I would suggest wearing safety glasses for your eye’s safety. 😊
Once your team learned to stabilize the instrument hand on the head of the tortise you had a much greater chance of success. Also obtain some high quality carbide burs. Definitely fine cut. Consult your dentist.

It is a start! It all begins with little steps. I did that when I first learn to trim my horses hooves and now he’s pretty good at that maybe I should try to electric drill?…

Pro-Tip here...smear lots of strawberry on the masking tape roll...he can taste the glue from the tape and spits the roll out
I didn't really get the whole jagged beak thing. Why is it a problem... does it make it difficult for him to close his mouth?

Sounds like the start of a torture session. Carrot and the stick..lol. Now ...how many times does this have to happen and why? Another question, can a tortoise be put to sleep for dental or beak work? Did you ever let him sit in your lap, looks like he was trying to be held. Awesome lil guy.
this is only our second time trimming it!! Luckily it isn't a regular occurrence, truly sounds horrific while we are doing it. He absolutely loves to sit in my lap - he doesn't quite know how big he is
