The Sulcata are trying to ESCAPE!

  • The sulcata tortoise herd have dug an extremely deep tunnel under the fence! Are they trying to escape? No! Actually it is normal tortoise behavior, digging a deep burrow for both protection and to have a cool place to hang out. The only problem is a deep hole like this presents a dangerous situation here in Florida. Our sandy soil could easily collapse or cave in on them and possibly kill one of these amazing animals. Time to fix the situation. Subscribe to Kamp Kenan► goo.gl/BecCMM Join our Membership to get YT perks: / @kampkenan

Kenan only just sticking out of the ground trying to talk to us seriously about Sulcata burrows is the funniest thing I've seen all week 😂 Also doesn't that go into your neighbours yard? Sulcata's do not care about boundaries.

Tortoise Whisperer has mainly Sulcatas. His Sulcattas dig 30 foot tunnels. The way he draws them back out is to spray some water and they come out as fast as possible just to see if hes got some cactus. Next to your channel and Garden State Tortoise. I like his dedication to the Sulcattas and his famous line for all his Tortoises..."Hey Buddy" And his main attraction Ike which breeds like a rabbit in all his vids.

I kid you not Kenan. I had a nice Male Sulcata back in the USA that lived in a smallish fenced area near enough to the back door so he could come inside at night. He normally would just come to the back patio doors and either scratch on them or open them if they were not locked. One evening, I realized that Spud had not come inside and it was well past 9:00 PM. So, I got a flashlight, and went searching. He had gone to the far corner of the concrete patio, turned around towards it, and dug nearly straight down and sideways to the center of the patio in less than 8 hours. (Soft Soil, no rocks) It was a dry and warm night with no rain in the forecast, so I left him there until the morning. Put a head of romaine about 10 feet from the hole, and waited about 5 minutes, and he boiled out of his new, one night only burrow. It is amazing how fast they can go without rocks and hard pack to deal with. Here, my new 40 pound female can dig all day and not go down at all in the limestone and rocks. Good Video. Thanks!!

Not under but over! When I was a kid I had a pair of adult North American Wood Turtles. The male was able to climb.a 6 foot chain-link cyclone fence to get into the neighbor’s vegetable garden. Luckily they found it “cute.” Chelonians are amazing escape artists. The female wasn’t as brave but the male was one big, athletic “woody!”

@@KampKenan Kenan Harkin if you remember from episode 2: of your series 6-7 years ago you went to Arizona where a guy had 30 Sulcata Tortoise "MONSTROUS SIZES TOO* Digging under the city roads 20-30 feet long and 10 feet wide: as OG fan of the channel I remember how scared you might have been to be under a road where Sulcatas have basically made a "mini underground railroad" I mean small bears could fit into there 😮!!
this is no surprise that Big Mama did this willingly and she's looking to lay alot of eggs: Brutus sadly isn't with us anymore (RipBrutus) he would be right behind Big Mama making double the size of a funnel 😂🎉😂🎉 "Party at Brutus and Big Mamas house!!" ..

A good friend of mine found out there is a danger even in AZ to letting your sulcatas dig. Someone's small dog got went in a burrow and then got blocked in by the tortoise. My friend, who works for the fire department, had to figure out how to get the dog out of a burrow with a stubborn tortoise. Thankfully she left the burrow to see what all the noise was when they started to dig it out from the top!

You could create faux burrows and make a concrete form that won't collapse, cover it with dirt, and still allow them to have that sense of cool security aside from the luxury condo. I would build it as a raised structure to avoid the flooding you mention and think of a way to be able to access it easily like we do storm cellars here in the South.

I don't know if living in the Mojave desert has anything to do with it but I found that running water down into the burrow makes my sulcata come out in a hurry. I guess he thinks he is being flooded and instinctively gets out quick. It is so dry here that the water isn't going to linger very long in his burrow and the little extra moisture makes for a better environment down there.

bwahahahah. Been there done that so many times. It's been a challenge to prevent mine from burrowing. When I lived in AZ it wasn't a crisis so long as you could make sure water didn't flow into the opening. The earth where i was didn't readily absorb massive rain storms, and prolonged rains were super rare anyway. This has not been the case AT ALL in Texas. I made their big house i built for them in a way that would remain humid and dark. I would still like to build a synthetic burrow though, but it's a lot of work. The goal would be for them to have soil, but not be able to dig out of it and it would need to be fully accessible for me while also being flood proof. If people don't want these problems, definitely don't get a sulcata. ha ha. Aldabras aren't cheap, but they don't cause this sort of drama. This is a good video that all prospective sulcata owners should see ha ha.
