  • What is a Pinguecula vs Pterygium? Learn what causes these conditions and how they are treated!
Ever looked in the mirror and wondered “what is the yellow spot on my eye”? If you have noticed a yellow spot on your eye, there is a chance it could be a pinguecula. A pinguecula is a small, yellow or sometimes pink growth on the white part of the eye. Pinguecula symptoms include irritation and dryness feelings on the eye but are mostly asymptomatic unless aggravated. Sometimes a pinguecula can become inflamed and is termed a pingueculitis. When Pingueucula treatment is required, doctors will often prescribe topical steroid eye drops to help with inflammation, otherwise prevention or conservative treatment with UV light protecting sunglasses and lubrication eye drops are recommended.
A pterygium is similar in that it is also a growth on the eye but often grows over the cornea. A Ptergyium is often called a surfer’s eye because they often develop on the eyes of beachgoers and people who spend time on the ocean. A pterygium is often progressive and may require surgical treatment because Pterygiums often induce irregular astigmatism. Symptoms of a pterygium include irritation, eye redness, and blurred vision. Pterygium treatment is often conservative to prevent progression but often requires surgery to remove it. Prevention of pterygium often also includes using UV light protection sunglasses and artificial tears.
If you think you have a pinguecula or a pterygium, I hope you find this video helpful and informative. Thank you for watching!

High Eye Pressure. Mine went from 26 to 30 last year and was 30 last week, it's been over 22 for 40yrs. My cornea thickness is only slightly thicker than normal I'm told. I'm being monitored for Glaucoma and have just been upgraded to a Glaucoma Suspect, which I believe means I haven't got Glaucoma but have the right conditions for it. UK. (I have a ptyrigium as well).

By chance I discovered my Pinguecula is getting smaller and the redness is going away when I use organic castor oil eyelash serum. I’ve been putting it on my eyelids at night and any time I’m not leaving my home. Many people claim that castor oil is a anti-inflammatory and reduces lumps and cysts in the body, others claim there is no proof. 🤷‍♀️ I will continue to use this since I am seeing great results. It also helps with lubrication in the eye area.

My left eye has been aggravated and inflamed due to my pinguecula and when I thought my eyedrops were actually helping they were actually irritating and causing more issues like redness, soon developed pingueculitus lucky for Systane balance restoring eyedrops to lubricate my eye is what tone down and made my eye appear much better very quickly. I’m so glad for this kind of informative and helpful videos. My eye is improving fairly quickly.

Same, I am 5 years with the pain of irritation that I want to keep my eyes closed. By my own I have found some stuff, gel lubricantd without conservants, washing my eyelids, and lately taking omega 3, that I read it helped to the brain, ans later on to the eye lubrication, my irritation pain is less frenquently, but the redness is there always, sometimes even more red. The oft. here, which is the only one, said that i cannot get surgery and gave me a lubricant with hialuronasa?, but i felt my eyes kept asking for more each 30 min, the gel one, sometimes make me feel dry after hours :)

I have scar tissue from it though and have ghost vessels that sometimes get irritated. Also told I have holes or lattice appearance of my retina and am at risk for a detached retina. My dad has perfect vision, never in his life has he needed glasses, and have never had eye complaints or issues, like 2 or 3 months ago, he started seeing a shadow in his right eye, and it happened for like a week, until he realized it wasn't going aways, well, his retina was detached, he had to get urgent surgery, 2 more days and I guess he could've lost all his eye, idk how it works, that's what they said, and also on his checks up like 2 weeks after, his left eye retina was going to detach as well, and they caught that one on time, it didn't cause any damage like in his other eye, now, he just sees like a water drop that the ophthalmologist told him it was normal from something they put in there, but he still doesn't need glasses, the ophthalmologist also explain that the retina detachment can happen to anyone, bc as we get older there is like a type of gel like in our eyes but it starts to dry out as we age

I recently had to start wearing an RGP contact lens in my left eye to try to correct stromal scarring following an ulcer. I was wearing it every day for about six weeks and one morning I fitted the lens and had a severely painful sensation in the eye which meant I had to remove it straight away. I attended my eye care provider and was told to stop using the RGP contact lens and they would make an appointment to see the contact lens clinic (hospital dept) for a review of the use of the lens. I did notice a pinguecula on the nasal side of the eye and I suspect that it's this that caused the pain, I had never noticed the pinguecula previously. the hospital suggested using eye drops (Hylo forte) regularly, which I have been doing for about 4 weeks. I am waiting for an appointment but would was wondering if the hospital are likely to now move me onto a scleral lens. Any thoughts?? Thank you so much

I spend my working day on an aircraft. So many of my colleagues, especially those who have been flying for many years have pingueculas. I wonder if that’s due to the extremely dry environment and tendency toward dehydration?

I bring you my case: I have pinguecula in one eye, and in the other, I had pterygium, for which I underwent surgery on February 15, 2024, with removal and placement of a part of the conjunctiva in the same spot. As of today, I still have eyes that are not as white as before but with many red veins. What can I do about this? thank you very much in advance.

I was taught that it's main treatment is surgery and then follow-up adjunct therapy. The Adjunct therapy includes Beta radiation therapy, and antimitotic agents (to stop cell division) like Hydromacin C and fluoroUracil drops.
But the best bet is to ask your doctor what cam be done about it.

I sunburned my eyes very badly on a weekend spring skiing trip when I was a teen. As an adult now I have large pingueculas on both sides of both eyes. I have allergies and they frequently irritate my eye, plus my eyes always look bloodshot. I want to ask what you think about Interferon alpha-2b eye drops to get rid of them. I've read many positive things about it.

Well to my knowledge there is no procedure for these conditions using lasers at this time. Perhaps once a pterygium is removed, lasik or another form of refractive surgery could be used.

    Question & I need advice:
Is a Conjunctival Cysts the same as Pinguecula and/or does is fall under this term? I have one of these bumps on my left eye--although it's clear, not yellow in color. I've had it for a few years now and it's made wearing my contacts uncomfortable to the point where I've stopped trying over the course of the pandemic. I work from home anyway, so I usually only wear my lenses outside of the house if there's somewhere I need to be but don't want to fiddle with having to keep my glasses clean. My other problem with this bump is that I can't get my eye doctor(s)--been to multiple offices trying to find one who'd help me--to believe me when I visit for my appointments. It's most prominent and raised when my allergies are bad, and I know it's there because I can definitely feel it when I blink. Especially when it's irritated. I've even had the dumb luck of coming to my annual eye exam with it raised and clearly visible only for my doctor to turn around and say "Sorry hun, I don't see anything." So Dr. Allen, what can I do?

@@MannuKumar-lv2fm no it is not. I have gone to a few different eye doctors. The last one I’ve gone to says that if she removes the cyst, the scar tissue left behind will probably be more irritating to me. I saw her a few weeks ago and she said she seems to think it’s gotten smaller. I use an allergy eyedrop in the morning and then throughout the day I use moisturizing eyedrop’s. I’m going to see her again in October. She said if he gets bigger to go back and see her and then we would talk about possible surgery.but I still have it. Sometimes I feel it and it’s very irritating, and sometimes I don’t feel it at all. It’s very weird and frustrating.
