  • Ever heard of hyperthyroidism or graves disease? In this video we review the 7 signs of thyroid eye disease! To learn more about other common eye diseases and treatments, check out our playlist here: • Large Eye Floaters Exp...
Thyroid problems can often result in complications involving the eye muscles. Whether you have hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism or euthyroid (normal thyroid levels), it is possible to develop thyroid eye disease. Most commonly, thyroid eye disease is seen with hyperthyroidism (frequently caused by an autoimmune condition referred to as Graves Disease).
Thyroid eye disease signs and signs of graves disease are very much one in the same; these include upper eyelid retraction, proptosis (exophthalmos), diplopia (double vision), eye pain, dry eye, edema and even optic neuropathy and vision loss.
Thyroid eye disease treatment options usually include prescription medications and glasses prisms to help alleviate diplopia. Orbital decompression surgery is often reserved as an endstage treatment option when needed. Thankfully a new medication has been FDA approved in the US called Tepezza to help with proptosis from Thyroid Eye Disease.

Yes - hyperthyroidism due to Graves Disease. The first thing I did after diagnosis was went to my eye doctor. Luckily it has not impacted my eyes at this point. Not opting for treatment since it's not bothersome, because I don't want to get fat!

I was misdiagnosed with Graves disease and was at the point of thyroid removal and a lifetime of maintenance medication. Found an article by 2 MDs at the Texas Heart Institute entitled Misdiagnosis of Graves Disease Due to Aspartame Poisoning. I started reading labels and removed aspartame from my diet (it's in everything "diet") and symptoms completely disappeared within 60 days.

Thank you for this timely video Dr. Alan. I was diagnosed with Grave's disease 1.5 month ago after a thyroid storm and my eyes have been changing so rapidly with just about all the symptoms you listed! They're no longer so swollen and red after my total thyroidectomy last week, but I still have lid retraction, lid lag, and dry eyes. Getting consultation for Tepezza soon!

Thank you for this video! TED is not talked about often enough. I struggled with TED for about 10 years because no one would take me seriously about my eye pain and rapid vision changes. I have Hashimotos, Graves and TED. Unfortunately my Positive graves results were over look and not added to my records only Hashimotos was. I struggled for years with my graves and Hashimotos battling each other. I was denied thyroid removal due to only having Hashimotos on my records. I found my own missed graves results as I became very hyperthyroid again and my eyes got worse again. One week after finding my lost results my thyroid was removed as a priority surgery. 1 year post surgery my eyes went back into place. For 10 years the were bulging at 19 in the left 20 in the right. Both are now at 18 I do have permanent vision changes from lack of treatment but I could not be happier that my eyes now look even 😊

Autoimmune diseases in general have similar complementary holistic treatment protocols. Reduce the inflammation through reducing exposure to the inflammatory trigger. Reduce stess and increase deep relaxation. Meier Schneider (the school for self healing ) palming helps with relaxing the eye muscles and optic nerve.) Donna Gates (body ecology diet book and website) and Isabella Wentz (thyroid books and website) use an elimination diet and cleansing to help with reducing inflammation.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease that was treated with radioactive iodine therapy and now I have acquired hypothyroidism. My vision issues have become really bad over the past year with reoccurring Uveitis, Blepharitis, and chronic dry eye. Hi Dr. Eye Health-- FIRST, thanks for your clear videos, and good diction. So many people, even broadcast 'professionals', are so LAZY in their vocal delivery. Just like with vision, voice-delivered content should be clear and immediately comprehensible. ♥
I'm 73 and was diagnosed in my early teens as having hypothyroidism. I took synthroid for a few years. Then re-diagnosed again at 40, have been on low dose synthroid since. Under the care of a great eye specialist for checkups 3x yearly since I had a macular wrinkle that resolved itself. No treatment needed. Now due for cataract surgeries.
***I asked the Dr about something puzzling me since my teen years--one eye sees ( turf grass for instance) with a green tint, one sees with a more blue tint. He'd never encountered this. any comments?

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 роки тому

Oh that is interesting! And thank you for your kind words!
With color discrepancies I think of medical conditions such as cataracts which can act like a yellow filter and maybe make things look different if the two eyes are not symmetric. In addition, any optic nerve damage can cause color perception changes (such as optic neuritis). But if the eyes are healthy, perhaps the way the retina formed as a child??? hard to know.

I’m going to see an ophtalmologist as soon as I get an appointment. Ive also been referred to an endocrinologist.
I have hyperthyroidism confirmed by blood work. Going to check for thyroid antibodies on my next blood draw.
I had a bunch of weird symptoms. High HR 90-140! (My previous resting was 60bpm!) Scary!
    So hot allll the time.
Tremors. Sometimes visible shaking but almost always feels like I’m vibrating. Scary.
    Eye symptoms: 👁️
Left eye sclera showing all around iris
Pain feels like pressure and sometimes dry sometimes very teary.
Looking down is better than straight ahead or up. Driving feels like a strain with more pain.

Aw, my twin! A whole year after experiencing the tremors, palpitations, brain fog and hot flushes, my left eye started to have scleral show. I thought it was ptosis in the right eye and went to the optician twice. I was referred to an ophthalmologist on the second visit in a very blasé manner as optician still thought it was nothing (thank God he did though!).
The ophthalmologists at the hospital also seemed to think nothing was wrong but just as they were about to send me home, one of the senior staff asked to look at my eye quickly before I left. He then said the right eyelid wasn’t droopy but that the left eyelid was higher. Cue more eye tests, blood tests and now an endocrinologist appointment scheduled for February - I’m so scared for the future I wish it was something that could be managed with lifestyle changes rather than meds or surgery 😪
I know I’m jumping the gun here - I should wait for the endocrinologist appointment before I start making predictions…
Wishing you the very best on your thyroid journey ❤❤

I have Graves Disease. I was diagnosed over a decade ago when I had a thyroid storm and ended up hospitalized until they could bring my heart rate down. I have always had really dry red eyes. I had eye pain and I was really sensitive to light at the time. The worst of it got better once my thyroid level came down and I had my thyroid removed, but I still had double vision. I agree that doctors don’t know enough about the eye issues with Graves’ disease, but my family doctor and even my endocrinologist were both pretty clueless about how much I was affected by Graves’ disease. When I tried to tell my family doctor I was having trouble reading and wasn’t all better after surgery, she prescribed me anti-depressants. Seriously. I went to my optometrist after that and she referred me to an ophthalmologist. I wish I had seen him from the beginning because he knew more about Graves’ disease than any other doctor I saw. I was given a lot of eye drops and had prisms made for my glasses to help with the double vision. 5 years later, I developed idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and I was referred back to the same ophthalmologist by my neurologist. I am so grateful to him, and to the neuro-ophthalmologist who eventually treated me.

I was diagnosed with graves disease about ten years ago. The doctor did surgery to remove my thyroid in 2012. Since then my left eye has been bulging and it has bothered me since it started. I have been to several doctors to try to get it fixed but they all tell me it's not severe enough. But when I meet people on a daily basis they seem to think it's plenty severe. For 10 years I wake up with this on my mind and go to bed with it on my mind and I'm tried of it. My feelings stay hurt from people staring and laughing at me. I don't know what to do anymore. I don't want to go out in public anymore and it has effects my job. I decided to get my CDL license think I would be alone to help me but it made things worse. I went to try and get the tempezza medicine and they would not help me. No one understands me or believe me when I tell them what I'm going through. I really need help with this and no one wants to help me. I don't want to go the rest of my life scared to go outside. But I guess I don't have a choice.

Hi Dr. Allen, I was diagnosed with Graves in 2016 while I was in my 1st thyroid storm put on medication for 2 yrs and finally was somewhat in "normal" range but my eye site was all over the place. in November of 2018 I ended up in another thyroid storm and nodules my 3rd endocrinologist (saving grace) tried to get my levels "normal" again with no luck and at the end of March of 2019 I had my thyroid removed. My levels where up and down and in 2020 I was then diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My eye site was all over the place I was in and out with my eye Dr. And several others for 2nd opinions and I have allergies to solutions. In 2021, and to today my a1c and thyroid levels are now normal and I feel great, however my eyesite has still been allover. My endo says it's rare but I could still get TED, the other eye Dr's I've seen say no, since July of 2022 I have had horrible dry eyes. I've been tested twice for sojourns, Noth time negative, it also started after getting covid, and didn't have any luck with restasis. I've tried so many drops, masks, humidifiers, and taping my eyes shut at night as well as new eye Dr's with no luck. I just paid out of pocket to go back to my old eye Dr since he known my health history for the last 20+ years. Sorry for the long rant.
So my question for you is have you seen anyone with out their thyroid still have TED?
I was given some samples of the other drops so I'm hoping for better results that restasis.
Do you have a recommendation on hydration sleep masks?
I love your channel and all the stuff you post! (my subscription might of been on my old phone other acct)
    Lastly thanks 😊

dirt in not 1 but both eyes! Immediately I said it could be dry eyes. And I did think thyroid.
I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto about a month ago. But to find out I could go blind! That’s insane at my age. I might as well be dead! Who is going to take care of me? I’ve always taken care of me and everyone else.
Have you ever heard of anyone getting better after they have all these ailments with their eyes ? I’m doing everything nutrition wise to heal this. I know stress is a biggie, but it’s as though you wake up stressed, it’s anxiety you never knew you had or rather you were not bothered by much and you handled it. I was so strong and healthy and now I’m watching something completely different with my body and mind.

I have also now been told I have wet macular degeneration which I believe there is no treatment. My mum had it and lost her central vision in her 80's.
