- Just some footage of some fine gold in mercury i have. I normally do not use mercury but have a little i wish to do a test with. I accidently used the wrong snuffer bottle to snuff up some gold and it got trapped in the mercury. Once i get or build a retort i will retort it down to re-capture the mercury and clean the gold.

Separating the gold and mercury.
Get a large potato, cut in half, scoop out a cavity in the middle of the potato and place the amalgam in cavity. Join together and tie with wire.
Bake in fire until potato is soft, (about 1/2 an hour), then retrieve little button of gold.
The mercury has vaporized into the flesh of the potato.
Mash the potato and wash the flesh in a bucket to collect the mercury. It is like dissolving mud.
Make sure you are wearing PPE when handling mercury.

PPE is personal protective equipment. Should always be carful handling mercury. Iam planning on doing a video on retorting mercury, may try and do a potato retort as well if I get a chance.

When a gold amalgum is formed it will be silver like the mercury. If you have enough an can get all the excess mercury off, you will have a semi-solid or pliable amalgum ball. But i find it safer to keep it under water the whole time and just suck excess mercury off with suction tweezers before i retort.
Remember mercury is toxic and can be dangerous if mistreated.
The old spud works all right.I had 2oz off amalgam to deal with down in Tasmania when i was dredging there,it was all legal we were on a gold lease. I don't know how the guys from Gold Rush Alaska would handle the fine gold from the Ford. Happy digging

interesting video, I've been evaporating (in a well vent area) mercury I find in the streams to retrieve the gold. Id be interested to see a way of recovering the mercury for future processing
Recovering the mercury and gold would involve a retort or acid/chemicals.
I use a non-vented retort, which boils the mercury off the gold in a metal chamber then carries the mercury vapor into a pipe which is cooled by water, where the mercury cools and turns back into liquid form. It then drips into a pan below the pipe leaving clean gold in the top chamber. Any contaminants will burn in the chamber and can block the pipe, which is what happened to me last time when i tried to record.

There is fine gold in with the mercury, though i believe the mercury has a gold tint in the video because of the lighting. Even with the gold amalgamated in the mercury, it still has a silver look to it.

The only gold visible when mixed with the mercury, is the gold sticking to the outside of the mercury.
The golden colour of the mercury is an optical illusion from the camera,water and light.

All i have used in the video is elemental mercury, alluvial gold dust and some water with rinse aid (dishwasher soap) in it. The gold/mercury amalgam is still silver in color, but in the video had a gold shine due to lighting and the blue pan more than anything else.
Never ever in my life I will hurt, even a blade of grass to extract gold. I will never ever put the one that feeds me to such thing!

I think a lot of people miss the point with music, i did not choose the song because i like it, but because i thought it was quirky and suited the video.

You can recover the gold by retorting it or by chemical means like acid.

And now you know where the term 'Amalgamated' comes from. It means to combine metals with mercury. In business, it means to mix one type of business with another, neither being pure in of itself. A 'Jack of All Trades' is an amalgamated individual, not mastering in anything but dabbling into a little bit of everything. It does not mean the individual cannot master into a single subject matter, they simply choose not to. A professional student is a prime example...

+Damon Jackson (Gaming & Science) I believe Iwablack64 is correct. The tem amalgam only applies to metals mixed with mercury. Where as gallium is used as an agent to make alloys with aluminium.
