  • This is part 2 of "Why Toyota 4Runner is the best built vehicle in the world" video series. If you haven't watched Part 1 yet, please watch that first here: • PART 1: ENGINEER EXPLA...
The Toyota 4Runner is still built in Japan - at the legendary Tahara factory in Aichi. It has a reputation for the best quality in the world, but how did Toyota achieve that with the 4Runner? Automotive Engineer David Chao - who has visited the Tahara factory 8 times - provides even more details on how the 4Runner is actually built there and why it has a world-class quality inside and out. The Lexus GX, along with most of other Lexus models, are also built at the Tahara factory.
Automotive Press is owned and managed by David Koichi Chao, a global expert in the field of automotive evaluation, consulting, and strategy. David is known around the world as an authentic specialist of Lean Thinking or Toyota Production System. Born and raised in Japan, David has an engineering degree from University of British Columbia and post-graduate education from MIT and Harvard Business School in Boston.

I really wasn't looking for a 4Runner last week when I traded my Escalade. I had my Escalade for 14 years and was looking to trade for a Honda or Toyota so that I could have another long term vehicle. Your videos have been so enlightening for me. I had no idea that I was trading for a vehicle that is almost guaranteed to last for the rest of my life. I am 61.
I traded for an SR5 Premium, and even though it doesn't have all the convenience features my old Escalade had, it certainly has plenty enough for me.
If you have any influence with Toyota, please, keep building the 4Runner in Japan. It's a matter of pride for those workers, as it should be. Beautiful craftsmanship and attention to detail. 👍 Truly a work of art.

fantastic choice. I owned 2 4runner generations. It's awesome. Just do a visual inspection under the vehicle annually and use POR15 to touch up rust spots. take a steel brush sandpaper first to the rust. also if you live in snow regions, always wash off the underside in the spring to get rid of the salt.

Took my RAV4 to the dealer this morning for an oil change. They had a new 4Runner on the showroom floor, and I gave it a close look. Every component was really heavy duty, inside and out, and I could see why 4Runners are so reliable and last forever. Seriously impressive.

Also it’s insane how auto makers that are making more money than ever which isn’t the problem, nor is the fact that they’re finding efficiencies in their production, but it’s a problem if they’re getting rid of human quality checks in the manufacturing/production of their vehicles. That’s a whole level of cheapness that really just hurts the customer and is driven by greed.

And l like working on cars. My son has a 2002 4runner with 310,000 miles, and it runs like a top, you can tell those also were made with superior components that were made to last. And I have a 23 TRD off road premium coming in just a few weeks for myself! I very much subscribe to your theory of getting a 5th gen while you can. I’ll be undercoating with woolwax this summer and every few years, as rust is one of the few things that might keep one of these bullet proof SUVs from getting to 1M miles.

Back in 1997 when my wife and I bought our four wheel drive extended cab Tacoma, we never realized how good the build quality is on Toyota products. I have always been really big on proper maintenance including engine oil and filter changes. We drove that truck for 24 years, and replaced it with our 2015 crew cab 4x4 Tacoma TRD Sport with 6 speed manual, which we still own. Then the wife wanted something bigger and roomier, so we bought a new 2018 Land Cruiser, and REALLY experienced what the meaning of overbuilt truly is. Now sometime this week we are taking delivery of a new 2023 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium. We simply love our Toyota vehicles because we value dependability, reliability, quality and value over anything else. No other manufacturer comes close in our opinion. I have really enjoyed both videos on the 4Runner, and after owning Toyota trucks since `97, it`s good to hear a professionals opinion and comments. Please keep the videos coming, they`re fun as well as educational.

@David - I just bought the 40th edition 4runner 2023 midnight black and I LOVE IT. I am requesting you do a video on that particular model, please. I want to see your expertise and comments on that particular car. I traded in my 2021 4x2 and bought this one and I plan on keeping this masterpiece for a very very long time, this is a special edition and will not be manufactured again. Besides, Toyota only made 4040 of them and I am so lucky I got mine. Again, I love watching your videos and learning from you and only on 4runners. I am requesting you to make this special edition video sooner rather than later, thanks - VK 😊🙏 Arigato Gozaimas.

Awesome 2 part series Sir! I love my 2017 4R TRD PRO! Btw, can you do video/videos like this on 2022 Taco TRD PRO or 2023 when you get your hand on one!? And have you been to Toyota Mexico plant? I pretty sure the vehicles from there won't be as nice as Toyota with J VIN but I would like to hear your opinion on how the quality of Mexico Toyota, especially the Taco, compare to the 4R from Tahara since I recently got back into Taco and have a 2022 TRD PRO with 6MT.

Seeing you talk about the weld spacing, use of steel stamping body parts and the fit/finish on interior reminded me so much of days past.
Large transition for our plant at this time. Many new workers coming in to replace retiring team members. A lot of knowledge is lost in this transition. Your videos of what makes Toyota different would be so useful.
Use of aluminum stamping for hood outers, fenders has been most interesting. My RAV4 is solid, but the hood fluttering at hwy speeds is ???? My ‘07 TACOMA w all steel panels is fav. Hopefully acquire a 4RUNNER before major model change.
I do like the new TNGA platform a lot compared to old Our ‘18 CAMRY XSE is like a slot car compared to earlier models we’ve owned. It is much more solid and driver oriented. It’s not a sports car, but a nice improvement!
Your knowledge and experience in the auto industry is highly respected by myself and others I work with who follow you. Those of us who are “old timers” miss the direct influence of the Japanese trainers from days past.
Looking forward to more videos on the 4RUNNER and perhaps LEXUS IS. Sad to see AVALON leave and ES transitioning back to Japan. I really believe my fellow team members could benefit from seeing your videos about TOYOTA production and what the true expectations are of our work and vehicles to have happy, satisfied customers.

@@AutomotivePress Thank you David for kind words. I’m going to see if there is any way your UA-cam videos could be aired via our Intraplant communications tv.
I believe all team members at our plant in Georgetown as well as other assembly plants here in North America would greatly benefit. With a change in workforce as senior team members retire, newly hired staff would see how important their attention to quality process work is. The manner in which you look at fit and finish, paint quality, interior fit and quality and body quality that shows up in ride and handling.
I like the series of videos on the 4RUNNER and what you have done with the TUNDRA . I’m guessing the next TACOMA would make a good series. Also, any insights into what the 2024 CAMRY is going to be like?

Awesome attention to detail (In your review and at Tahara). I always knew the manufacturing process for the 4R was unique and shared the Lexus pedigree of quality, only found at Tahara, but I didn’t know exactly how or where those extra special appointments were implemented. I appreciate my 2016 4Runner Limited even more now! I’ve owned it for over 6 years and never had a rattle or problem with anything at all. However, I do have one small issue which came up about 2 years ago….I noticed that my power moonroof has slowed down considerably. and sometimes does not close on “auto” click. I have to hold the switch forward or back a few seconds before it will engage the “one touch auto” click sequence. Even with a new battery, there’s still that delay which is followed by a very slow crawl speed when opening or closing. It’s pretty much negligible, but if I had to find something that went bad, that’s all I can come up with!

I agree with everything you say about the 4R except the ‘thicker paint’. I have a ‘17 ORP (Nautical blue metallic) and the paint isn’t the best. I’ve heard even worse things about any 4R painted white. I highly recommend doing a clear protective (3M, etc) over, at minimum, the leading edges of the truck. As for everything else: 85k mi and only one issue (left front driveshaft needle-bearing replaced with ECGS bushing) so all good! Thanks for the details. Stay safe.

Hi David. Thank you for these videos. You mentioned the increased amount of spot welds in the 4Runner done to make sure it doesn’t fail in any crash testing. However, It receives poor score in the small front overlap test for safety cage drivers side in the IIHS test. And only 3/5 stars for the passenger in the NHTSA test. Could you comment on this and share any thoughts as an automotive engineer. Why hasn’t toyota tried to correct this after so many years of poor crash test scores? This has deterred me from buying one even though I love this truck.
    Thank you !

    • @matthewputnam7486
      @matthewputnam7486 Рік тому +1

The small front overlap test was not being used at the time of the 5th Gen design. The 4Runner still does well on the roof crush tests and the telephone pole tests despite its older design. The 4Runner is heavier than the average vehicle so in a vehicle on vehicle crash, the 4Runner will outperform a lighter vehicle. Manufacturers build their vehicles to pass these tests, and it begins at the early architecture stage, so the 6th Gen will probably pass all of the tests easily but at the end of its life cycle, there will be new tests it struggles to pass.
This does not mean the 5th Gen is an unsafe vehicle. I'd bet that on average it has less injuries to the occupants than a better scored vehicle in a vehicle on vehicle crash due to the advantage it has with the laws of physics.
