You can rust just about anything! Even if it isn't suppose to! These make great embellishments for mini albums, junk journals, travelers notebooks, planners, etc. I just love the look of rusted metal but I don't have the patience to wait weeks, months, years for the magic to happen!!! This is just one way, may not even be the right way, but its the way I have been doing it.
Disclaimer- I have not done any research about this process. Rust at your own risk!

I have never thought to intentionally rust metals, but results have me speechless. 😮🤓 Now my mind is thinking of all the ways I can put this idea into practice.
Thank you once again for educating and stretching my perceptions. 🤩😊
awesome experiment thanks Jennifer
I am doing that tomorrow thanks for showing us the experiment. They look cool and I like both for different things. You are awesome.
love this, great job, I will defiantly try this. Judy
I've only done safety pins & paper clips. I soaked mine overnight in hydrogen peroxide & then added white vinegar & salt & they rusted really quickly...except for the newer items. *I purchased paper clips at an estate sale & had some of my grandma"s safety pins & added some of my new paper clips & safety pins. The newer items didn't achieve the fantastic results of the older items.
My standard poodle, Iris was totally answering back to your dog Sophie. :)
Wow, I thought it would be 24 hours or 2 days at least. Thank you for sharing this.
❤️ Shirley
This is a s great thank you!! Giving it a try!
I was a bit dubious about 'rusting' charms to start when but when I saw the results I was hooked! I shall be trying this technique for myself very soon. Thank you for sharing this lovely method of making new metal pieces look old.
I really love the effect on the paper towel. The old solution left lots of powdery goodness behind
Love this video! I am going to do this and also recycle the liquid used to rust and paint on paper to get an older look than tea dyed paper. I will also dip some seam binding in this used solution. Thanks Jen for all these great ideas.
I am glad I decided to read comments before adding my own. I was going to ask about painting on paper to get an old look. I didn't think about seam binding. Please post your results.
That’s a great idea
Living in Florida everything rusts on its own LOL. Definitely giving this a try. Thanks for the great video instruction.
The lil carriage did turn.
Thanks for the idea.
Can't wait to give this a try. Thank you for sharing.
Hugs... Linda
I tried today, and wow what results I got! Love it!
Thanks Jenofeve! Love how different they all are! Hugs and blessings.
I love when you show techniques & experiments! That was a fun video. I’ll be trying it soon...
Thank you! I thought it was so much fun. Enjoy!
Great video Jen thank you and great Idea Deborah Mitchell about using the solution on paper and seam binding. This is going to be fun.
A stunning video, I 'm going to try it . Thanks for sharing.
I have seen another video on this but your style is so enjoyable to watch. You are a wonderful teacher.
1 minute in and I’ve subscribed for your voice alone! 😀 absolutely delightful
Wow this is awesome Jen. I love how they each turned out. Thanks for sharing
Very cool. Love your approach. Just go for it
Jennifer...I used your method for rusting metal, paper clips & safety pins...worked great...I made a lot, so that should hold me for a good while. your method and directions were great. Love your work. Hugs...
Love this!!!! Thank you for sharing!!
This is very easy to try, thanks!
Thank you for this awesome video. I can’t wait to try this.
It’s better to give it more time. I do it overnight . I love your works, very classy🌷
Thank you!
Our printer does that too...hubby says it's like a self maintenance with our laser printer.
Thanks for the rust tutorial...will be doing this!
I wonder if it would help to soak them in acetone before the rust solution. It may help remove the protective coating that is used to prevent rusting ?
Love the video...I've never tried rusting anything before..I'm fascinated...off to buy silver "stuff". Thanks Jenn
Thanks for sharing your way of "rusting" with us! It looks like fun and I like the look, too! xo
Awesome video...thanks for sharing :)
Loved the tutorial will definitely try it thank you
Love it! Tfs!
Awesome! I leave mine for an hour. they turn out great!
Great idea! It just shows too though, that our 'metal' items are made out of some newer types of materials... and just don't rust like the older stuff!.... lol... modern times!!!
I'll do mine in a mason jar with a lid so I can save it. I enjoyed the video, but I enjoy all your videos. Thank you!
I absolutely love this Jennifer thank you so much I have been wanting a technique for making things rusty for a very long time and it so happens I have everything in my cupboards I’m going to do this tomorrow thanks again
so cool
By the way.....
Love your enthousiasm and your projects!
I love the look of the rusted things! Back in the day when I tolepainted I would add rusted stars, etc. to my painted pieces and am thinking I used bleach and peroxide (can't remember for sure but worked outside never indoors). With that said, a word of advice, do not dump the leftover liquid down house drains - this stuff can eat holes in older pipes!
That's the same way I did it years ago when painting & yes I did mine out in garage because of fumes.
Bleach will pit and or dissolve some metals and can be dangerous when mixed with other chemicals.
I’m going to do this!
Thanks for sharing, love the effects! And so easy to make :) Def going to give this technique a try!
Fascinating! I felt like l was back teaching science 😊
Thanks!!
haha, I've got some going now !!! Yours turned out great !!! Such a cute idea for just making stuff different, what a wonderful idea !!!! TFS
its like magic! ahhhhhhhhhhh the little numbers 😍 excellent project, my friend 🤗
Hi Jen love that book at the beginning! OMGosh
Jen, have you ever used liver of sulfur? Used to be able to get it at radio shack. Might have it at craft stores, not sure. It doesn't really rust the metal as much as it blackens it. Just wondering if you've ever tried it.
Another thought....could the excess solution be used to dye paper? Hmmmm...
Use your leftover oxidizing liquid to 'stain' wood lovely shades of weathered grey. (always test your wood first as different wood react differently, ie. lighter grey to nearly black). Dip or brush once, it will darken as it dries. Then dip or brush a second time if you want a darker grey shade.
Apple Cider Vinegar works great too. Fun video!
Bleach does a good job of rusting too! I like the old solution results mostly best
I enjoyed it, and yes! defiantly a new look. what do "WE' say: out with the NEW in with the OLD.
Made me nervous with your phone being right there. Lol.
Love the look!
That's amazing! From brand new to vintage. I'm definitely going to be using this technique
Nice
I wonder if you lightly sanded some of the keys and things that didn’t change much if that would help the solution get into them a little more
Love when I get notification of new video from you!
Those turned out awesome! Just an FYI, light kills hydrogen peroxide, that's why its sold in a solid color bottle. That is also part of why there is a big difference in looks. Experimenting is always fun!
I am into the 2nd 10 minutes of this video and wanted to say I think it's the salt that activated the rusting
I wasn't going to watch this video but I'm glad I did!! Such neat stuff!!! Hugs
Only steel / iron will technically rust.... guess the other "base metal or white metal" just stains. Cool either way... need to try it. 🙏🏻☮️
Nice video but what do you seal these with-- spray sealer or hairspray?
I would suggest leaving out the water. I think it dilutes the solution down, and slows down the process...just a thought.
Kool, but I think overnite. Will give this a try, I do like the dark bronze color over the silver, but I don't like the smell of metal on my hands.
Usually when something starts to rust it does not stop. Do you suppose that rust will eventually bleed or stain your pretty papers? Perhaps faux rust paint would work better over the long haul?
Cool!
I think your printer may be going through a cleaning cycle. Ours (HP laser printer, and an Okidata laser printer) do that.
I tried this a week ago. Not from your video but mine did hardly nothing just dulled it’s. I did safety pins n paper clips. , guess I’ll try again
Jennifer, Make sure your manual focus is turned on. Gotta a rust some clips now.
Yes!!! Learning to rust! Off to watch now ♥♥ Thanks Jen ♥♥
Very good information, thanks for the video. I really like the outcome. Please write the first ingredient you used, I'm not an English speaker and I did not understand, thank you. thanks for being there
Adriana, she used hydrogen peroxide, salt and vinegar.
I tried rusting paper clips , left them for a week. They have a coating and won’t rust. Where do I get paper clips that aren’t coated?
It seems to me that when I did this, years ago, it went faster if covered it. It also suggested that you seal them after you finish.
Great video Jen!!! Loved it!!!
Hi Jen, another fun thing to do is mix water and miracle grow. The blue powder kind. It gives a verdigree look to certain metals. Where did you get your chicken wire roll. I need one. I'm going to try your technique. New subbie here. Love your videos.
Some of those items that did not rust very much can be helped along it you sand them lightly. They have a light coat of sealer on them or they would rust before you could use them. I used rusty tin for several years. I would be careful dying paper with it, too much stinks. Thanks for your video
AGREED! Why use acid free paper then add acidic items on top of it? It will deteriorate the paper and/or discolor it over time.
very cool, i am going to have to try this, using the rusted things does it color the paper at all? usually rusty things will color what they touch?
Do you seal everything so that the rust does not ruin your pictures and paper? I like how it looks but worry about the damage the rust might cause. Just like when people tea and coffee dye paper. I heard putting baking soda in the solutions takes away the acid. Have you ever done that?
Baking soda will take away the acid, but the acid is what is rusting the metal so I'm thinking it's not such a good idea. You could experiment with the acids used, such as using lemon juice in place of the vinegar. The peroxide will work as a substance that will oxidize, so maybe increase that amount?
TFS! I’m using food grade cider vinegar and it’s going crazy! I’ll post on FB page :)
I like both of them and maybe the old solution a little more. Did it rub off like the new solution?
New subbie. Glad you popped up on my feed. Hugs! 🌼🐝🌼
pam bradshaw Thank you for watching!
I wonder if you can use Apple cider vinegar since it lends itself to that beautiful amber color all ready hmmm :)
love your videos. where did u buy the chicken wire?
Getting Rusted, Is Character!😎
You may be able to use clear nail polish so the rust won't rub off
The old batch looks like the best creamy latte ever, just the way my mum makes it.
I think the best way to do this is to paint rust colour on these. Every time you touch these I want to scream "NO DON"T DO THAT." Rust is a dangerous substanceand, touching it isn't a good idea.
I love that, let’s rust some stuff. Hehehe. Such cool effects, do you happen to know of any alternative ways to do this without vinegar I have an allergy love ur vid 💕
You could try lemon juice as an alternate acid, but not sure how much as opposed to vinegar.
❤️❤️
it rusts a little better if you sand things a bit
I call it "oxidize", sounds lovelier right?
I hope you take off your pretty ring and other jewelry before oxidizing them too
I WISH my printer would start!
the fast high voice is making me laugh!
This is so cool...Thank You for doing this, but next time take your beautiful rings off..lol..I was sitting here hollering at you and hoping it didn't do anything to them...LOL..Thanks Again...
Might be fun to Now swap the things in each of the jars for maybe....15-29 minutes?????
All the videos I have seen on this, they do not add any water to mixture.
great video I just got done doing my. the big paper clip from dollar tree did not rust.
My Grandma used to say "Oh rust buckets!" I never heard her swear lol. The reason the "older" solution didn't work so well this time is because the hydrogen peroxide lost its strength from sitting.
Hi sweetie I've been watching you for a really long time and I totally love everything that you do I actually tried the fabri-tac that you referred and I had a serious allergic reaction I'm wondering if possibly you might be too because it presented in the same way my other allergies did course I'm not a doctor and I am not telling you what to do just thought I'd mention that love you
The reason the keys aren’t rusting is because they have a coating on them. Also, don’t dilute solution with water.
Maybe the water diluted the solution?
+jen of eve designs Hi Jen, I'm sure some of those Momenta products are faux metal. I might be wrong about the ones You have but I been super panicking in case They dissolve on You or something. Been trying to check online for You but can't be sure which ones You have. Are They the stickers? Don't They only have some metal in them or are made to look & feel like metal but aren't? I'm getting different info from different places here. I'm UK so You might have different stuff over there, like more of a range.
ouy can rust thing with poor winegaer , over night, rinse dem i vater lev den to dry, men the rusr begins after
Oh wow! The Momenta aren't real metal. They're faux metal unless Yours are a different kind to the line I'm thinking of. Hoping it goes okay with those. I'd have let You know sooner if it was live. Sorry. Just wondering in case it dissolves em or something.
Did you know your teaching people how to make paracetic acid and your handling it without gloves or any safety equipment. Just saying. Though I’ve played with it and it’s a blast. Just be safe. 😉
Just throw it in the fire, works fine,
