- I got invited to visit Istanbul Turkey to tour the Mercedes Benz Turk bus manufacturing plant. On top of that I got a first hand look at how the New Mercedes Tourrider is being built solely for North America!
I never knew Turkey was such a bus nut paradise!

Handled just like a world class champ, without any ounce of gushing-over with star-struck gibberish. You handed the pertinent, hard and important questions directly to the horse’s mouth. Thank you so much for “cutting to the chase” and keeping it real for us. A great take away for me personally over here in Minnesota is the fact a major modern motorcoach manufacture has opted to offer the tested, true and tried Detroit Diesel engine and Allison transmission combo. From the powertrain offerings alone, Mercedes has set up to compete dead-head on with the best North America already has got to offer.
It is so cool that they invited you to Istanbul and to take a tour of their factory! I'm excited for part 2!

Ability to produce 16 buses a day-16 takt in Mercedes.. I have recently visited the MAN factory in Ankara, responsible of producing majority of the MAN buses/coaches worldwide so much so that the guide funnily enough referred to MAN as Maschinenfabrik Ankara-Nürnberg. Comparing the production capacity, the MAN facility in Ankara also had the capacity to produce 16-17 buses a day of varying category with average delivery time of around 21 days.. The guide was telling us about how they were attempting to push it towards the 18-20 takt margin with multiple shifts. (He said that they had to lower production rates due to the 2020 epidemic) Overall I must say the layout was pretty similar to Mercedes!

Love from Jakarta, Indonesia !!! This is really cool !!! I like trucks and buses too, besides airplanes. Mercedes-Benz also has a plant in Bogor, Indonesia which produces cars, trucks and buses. In Indonesia, the manufacturer produces the rolling chassis, while third parties do the body, interior work and so on.

Hey. I'm not even sure if I qualify as an enthusiast or aficionado of the motorcoach world and won't even challenge anyone with my limited knowledge of the industry. But my love for these vehicles started with my dad when he was one of the few African American drivers at Greyhound in the middle to late 1960's and drove a manual transmission "double decker" ScenicCruiser.
Obviously it took a little convincing for me to understand that there was no double decker for that particular model and the fact that the passengers on the lower level probably required some windows and other infrastructure to make the miles go by but he was very patient and understanding with his 3 year old student and son and presented his wealth of information as if he wanted me to understand what he was talking about without getting too deep in the weeds of technical information or so fast that I couldn't keep up and lose interest all together.
That's a difficult task and there are more people in the role of teacher, instructor and writer without that very important ability and quality.

Never thought Mercedes only makes luxurious cars but trucks and buses for daily use ✨🔥🔥 super interesting
Their trucks and vans and daily use are their bread and butter for most of the world.
Mercedes, BMW and other companies from europe make every day cars, their basically the original ford and chevy of Europe. They entered the U.S market as a luxury maker for their higher end cars later on.

It's awesome that Detroit Diesel is being used for the Mercedes buses. Sucks that they weren't used by other bus manufacturers here in North America after 2020. I don't understand why the Detroit Diesel DD15 or DD 16 wasn't at least used for 2021 2022 or 2023 J4500's

Lol the breaks though at 1:04 😂 ur right if ur gonna test the bus then test it. It’s not called a drive slow and steady track it’s meant for actually driving conditions and what the bus might encounter on the open roads

Great video James. Do you do your own camera work or do you have a camera man? Beautiful clean factory running 3 shifts. WOW. I missed it but how many people do they employ? I loved the spot were you talked about Setra parts being expensive and you asked if MB parts were going to be expensive the gentleman was at a lose for words. Looking forward to Part 2

Those seat ornaments (9:08) are going to last a day before somebody tries to steal them, ripping the seat in the process. It's like why USPS got their Metris vans with an eagle instead of the star on the grille.

I'm surprised Daimler hasn't tried bringing the citaro to the US.
Unlike motorcoaches, which are usually privately owned, the majority of city buses are funded by taxpayers and that money always has buy-American provisions attached. That means building a whole US assembly line, making sure you can use their existing NA engines (Detroit Diesel), transmissions, etc. It's going to require a big order for that to happen.

Hi Steve. Good question. So the plant in Istanbul has been around for 30 years and they mainly produce buses for Europe. Recently they built an addition to their factory to build the Tourrider, The bus dedicated for the US market. Turkey has a abundance of work force as well as known for quality workforce. Most of the world have been buying heavy trucks and buses Built from this plant in Turkey for decades and their reputation has held up.
@@MotorcoachWorld Am 100% certain of the quality. I was thinking in terms of shipping costs. Even before the pandemic, it must have been crazy expensive to put one of those buses on a roll on roll off ship and send it to the US.
I don’t see MCI or Prevost worrying much about MB taking much of their market. Parts expense is a huge chunk of the costs of keeping a motorcoach running. MB parts will be a dealbreaker for many smaller charter businesses.
Tourrider will use the same service as Freightliner. No parts will be hard to get.
@@TellurideS13 That’s not true at all. Parts have been held up on long established brands like MCI and Prevost with huge distribution in the USA post Wuhan Croup lockdown. Mercedes has a long established reputation for exorbitant prices on their parts. Many times body panels and glass, ect can be purchased used for MCI and Prevost buses at a great savings over new parts. Small charter businesses won’t be able to do that with Mercedes buses here in the states. You’re going to either pay Mercedes price for parts or do without.
Side glass, bay doors, mirrors, are common parts that drivers tear up and fortunately can be found used for half what a new component would cost. These Tier IV emissions units break down enough without additional expenses for only being able to buy new parts from Mercedes. I’ve got enough experience with Mercedes’ cars to know how much they love to charge for their parts. No thanks on a motorcoach.
@@prevost8686 Mercedes-Benz doesn't build the Tourrider. Daimler Truck builds the Mercedes-Benz branded trucks and buses. Daimler and Mercedes-Benz are separate companies now. Many parts on the Tourrider you can get from a Freightliner dealer. The engine is a Detroit DD13. Getting parts for the engine and the emissions components won't be too expensive since the engine and it's emissions components are already used in Daimler Truck NA branded products.
