    I’m so frustrated. It seem that you can’t use image review on time lapse or easily pause the time lapse in the middle. Why? This is so useful for checking my exposure during a long time lapse and I could do it on my d850. Nikon is so strange with adding features and taking them away from their camera that I think it’s best to just pick one camera and stick with that for as long as you can. Why upgrade when you might not have the same basic features you had on a previous camera?

    • @LondonViewpoints
      @LondonViewpoints  Рік тому

      What about trying an external intervalometer and reviewing in between the shots, I know it’s not ideal but may work for you

  • @4CardsMan
    @4CardsMan 2 роки тому +1

    I use a Z6 for time lapse HAND HELD using from a moving boat using an AIS manual lens, recording TIFF's, which the Z6II cannot do. The problem is that you have to go through the menu to start the time lapse. I have submitted a feature request to Nikon to allow starting the time lapse with a remapped function button. Also, you cannot see an interval shorter than 3 sec on the monitor screen, which is a problem. This is a really awkward situation. My old Panasonic G6 allows both. My work-around is to install a bubble level on the flash bracket and try to keep it level during the time lapse. Combining in-camera VR and the NLE's stabilization yields a fair result.

    • @LondonViewpoints
      @LondonViewpoints  2 роки тому

      Why shoot tiff ? Best to shoot raw and export after adjustments to tiffs to then make them into prores4444 files, that’s what I do, and if you do need to see screen at faster intervals then just get an external intervalometer where even at 1s you can still see the screen flash at least 👍🏻

    • @4CardsMan
      @4CardsMan 2 роки тому

      @@LondonViewpoints I shoot TIFF because it has wider dynamic range than JPEG, without the inconvenience of handling RAW files. I can import TIFF's directly into FCPX and quickly create the time lapse. I try to get the maximum quality with the minimum time spent in post. My time lapses are about 20 minutes shooting time, producing around 1000 images. Now that November has finally arrived on the Gulf coast, I will be back out there for another six weeks or so, until it gets a little too chilly to try to keep still on a moving boat with a stiff north wind. What would be ideal would be to start in video mode while the captain steers the boat from the landing towards its destination, then switch to photo and start the time lapse once the course has been set. I take your point about the external intervalometer. I'll look into that.

    Thank you, very thorough and informative. Question please, the aperture flickering you mention, is this only on Z lenses? What about non-Z lenses attached via the FTZ (I think you might have partly answered this in another comment)?
    A lot of Z6 II reviews say it's not enough of an improvement on the Z6 but I agree with you, the SD card and being able to power it externally alone are great upgrades. The lack of SD support on the Z6 ruled it out for me (I went for a Z50 in the end).
    The time lapses you had in the intro were amazing, I was especially mesmerised by the trains, would love to see more of the hustle and bustle of London life.

    yes, I get what you say about SD / xqd card speeds, also an issue with phase one XF 150 MP IQ4 medium format camera, that is why in a video about connectivity/ tethering of the camera, they specifically recommend the Ethernet connection, due to its speed. ( as opposed to WiFi style of communication)- like app connection to a phone, in fact they demonstrate that the CABLE transfer of the files is quicker overall, USB-c first, then the Ethernet ( due to the unlimited length of cable you can use).

    Hi Michael, thanks for this great video! I loved looking it! There are two questions I have :
    1) You did mention that you don't like the software-restrictions in the "time-lapse movie" in terms of video lenght....while doing the review did you see you can activate "time-lapse movie" within the "Interval time shooting" Setting Options ? I am not sure, but I think this could be a work arround as you can set much bigger time windows within "Interval time shooting" !!? or am I missing something ?
    2) With all the options a z6ii offers in "Time-lapse movie" and "Interval timer shooting"....I can't find to justify the buying of the external LRTimelaps PRO Timer....do you see a reason for still buying one ?

    • @LondonViewpoints
      @LondonViewpoints  3 роки тому

      Hey, thanks, glad you found it helpful. 1) Great point, that’s definitely a good workaround, didn’t think of that, so when you’re done you just delete the raw images, that could work, but haven’t tested it to know if the video can be longer than 3min45s, but 9999 images is about 6min and 40s so maybe it’ll still make that into one file. 2) I don’t have one, and not planning on buying one, ramping interval would be the only reason why I would be interested in it, but I would ramp so rarely that I can’t justify the price . Hope this helps

    • @LondonViewpoints
      @LondonViewpoints  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks, I can’t remember actually was it the case on D850 but on Z cameras with F lenses via FTZ up to f5.6 they don’t flicker, above they do, but maybe that’s why you’ve not noticed it if you shot at wider open than f5.6 on DLSR . Yes LRT can remove it, but it’s an extra processing step that quite frankly if you shoot multiple manual short term timelapses you don’t want to add to your post processing time, but you have to occasionally

My laptop has an SD card slot but I often forget to travel with the XQD reader... I would add that it was the XQD card, rather than a lack of dual cards slots that annoyed me most about the Mk1 coming previously from a camera that used SD. I will say however that the XQD has been bombproof, but as a feature it kinda backfired.

    • @LondonViewpoints

      Indeed it’s the SD cards for me too why one of my Z6 is going on eBay, on the note of XQDs, yes they were bombproof and I really loved how fast they offload to an ssd , but that’s it, I’d cope with slowed transfer speeds for the price and capacity benefits of sd 😉

In general I noticed that in most Z6 photography situations the focus results are better when vibration control is ON, even when using external flash light.

    Thank you for your really helpful video. I also like your other videos very much. Maybe you can help me with one issue: I also updated from Z6 to the Z6ii recently and I discovered a strange behavior during timelapse photography. Maybe you can confirm the same behavior. If I set the exposure time to 15s and the external intervalometer to 15.7s (0.7s gap between the shots) the camera doesn’t take every second picture. I’m using the LRTimelape Time Pro. The problem occurs only with an exposure of 15s. All other exposure times are working just fine with a 0.7s gap between the shots (e.g. 4.0s and 4.7s -> 10s and 10.7s -> 13.0s and 13.7s -> 20s and 20.7s) Do you have the same behavior at 15s? Am I doing something wrong? I’m quite sure that 15s with a 15.7s interval worked fine with my old Nikon Z6. Or maybe other users can double check this behavior. Thanks from Germany, Nico

      Hey Nico, thanks a lot for your kind words, yes it’s best to check these things, I still haven’t upgraded to the Z6II, waiting for lockdown to be lifted and the first gig to pay for it so I’m still in my two Z6’s. Also I don’t have the LRT PT so can’t confirm how it affects the gap time. However it also all depends on all the setting you can have on or off like AF, IBIS, lens corrections (diffraction and vignette ) photo size and quality + jpegs it not, card speed etc, I always had no skipped frames with only a 0.4” gap, but once on a Z6II on a 30s exposure and 31” interval it did skip and only took every second photo, which I didn’t fully analyse why, and just assumed I didn’t switch one of the above setting off, but maybe in a long shutter like 15 or more seconds it needs a slightly longer gap🤷🏼‍♂️

      @nicoheise_de 3 роки тому +3

      @@LondonViewpoints now I understand the problem with the exposure time. I wrote to Gunter Wegner (you might know him -> LRTimelapse) and he said that an exposure time of 15s is actually 16s. All camera manufactures are using the wrong exposure time "names" due to historical reasons. The "real" exposure times 2 to the power of x. So 15 sesonds is actually 2 to the power of 4 seconds = 16s. And 30s = 2 to the power of 5 = 32 seoconds. I double checked this behavior by using a stop watch and Gunter was totally right. That might also explain your problem, that at 30s exposure and an interval of 31s every second photo skipped. I have learned something today and this information might also be helpful for you and others as well. And by the way: 20s = 20s :)

    As far as the Panasonic S5 goes, I believe the camera shoots at the intervals that you specify, and then it recognizes that specific range of RAW photos as a collection, and from there you can output it at any of the cameras compatible resolutions and frame rates, forward or reverse. With both the Nikon Z and Panasonic S range of cameras there are a lot of complex options and I think they both have some caveats. I believe they are both very comparable in this regard, but I would really like to see someone compare those two cameras specifically for time lapses.

      @@LondonViewpoints Normally I would agree, and I was totally torn on picking up a Z6 used or just biting the bullet on a Z6ii, but I ended up with the Z5 for $996 new around Christmas. I actually bid on a few used Z6's on eBay and got outbid at $200-$300 over what I ended up getting the Z5 for. Nikon launched that camera at the wrong price. At $1000 or less, it's the best full frame camera for the money, and definitely the best time lapse machine that I can think of. This is my first Nikon and my first full frame mirrorless, and I imagine it will end up being my gateway to the Z6ii or perhaps Z6iii.

      @@peterhamilton7218 most likely and you will see the difference unlike when I upgraded from Z6 to Z6II where it was all about the features but no change in quality, but I was happy with that, it was the extra features I was after

    Another great video 👍 the z5 also has some of these features: simultaneous raw and Timelapse movie, usb power & dual card slots (both sd). For timelapse main differences I can see is no useful top lcd and sensor not being bsi. Do you think the non bsi sensor still makes the z5 an option especially for iso3200-6400 Astro timelapses?

      Thanks, mainly it’s the fact you can easily get a used Z6 cheaper than a Z5 and I’d do that any day for the superior sensor, especially for astro

    for example, my Sony 6400 has a constant aperture, that is, it does not open and close for each shot, shows the image on the screen while shooting a timelapse, is powered by a simple and cheap power Bank, for example, xiaomi 10000 mah shooting time is almost 10 hours, takes a frame every 1 second without skipping frames. While the picture is being taken, the previous one is being recorded on the card. At the same time, my Nikon D850 does not know how to do this, and it's so sad

    • @LondonViewpoints
      @LondonViewpoints  3 роки тому

      Indeed I had some issues when it came to timelapse when I had d850 on loan, the image quality was beautiful but too many things jsut didn’t work for me too. On your A6400, first off it’s a crop body hence it’s out of the option for me as I need to use full frame for all my shift architectural lenses, but it’s interesting how you say it shows the preview constantly but up to what length of shutter can it definitely not skip frames? Have you tested 0.8” or a full 1” ?

    • @soleg19741
      @soleg19741 3 роки тому +1

      @@LondonViewpoints Of course, it's a crop. Yes, I tested 1 "shutter speed with 1" interval. This goes without skipping frames every second. In any p,A,m mode. I didn't test the S mode, because I don't use it in real shooting. The camera display shows the captured frame in the remaining interval before the start of the next frame. The less time left, the shorter the impression. When the exposure is equal to an interval, such as 1" and 1", the display shows a very short time, about 0.1-0.2 seconds. It is difficult to evaluate a frame and all the information in one impression, but it is possible for 5-7 impressions, although it is inconvenient. Nikon always shows a black screen. Sony also has three methods for smoothing exposure differences, which will reduce flicker. In the same shooting, Nikon's flicker is stronger.

      @@LondonViewpoints I love Nikon, and I've been in the system for about 12 years. My first camera was D80, then D700, D800, d850. Now I own a Sony 6400 for a year, I bought it out of interest to see another system and not spend a lot of money. I took about 200-300 timelaps. And this cheap crop is much more convenient than the expensive d850. I didn't own z. But it's not much different from the d850, I can see from the menu. The best thing about Nikon is full frame, dynamic range. And that's all. If you compare it with a crop, and if you compare it with a full frame of Sony? Why am I so cruel to Nikon? Because they can be better and it's not hard to improve, but they don't do it for us.

    • @LondonViewpoints
      @LondonViewpoints  3 роки тому +1

      @@soleg19741 that’s good to know a6400 can do 1” over 1” without skipped frames👍🏻if you shoot external intervalometer on Z6 and shoot 0.6” over 1” you still see a frame for a fraction of a second, like 0.1” but yeah on longer gaps to see a preview you do have to shoot external intervalometer
