- Today I'd like to take a comprehensive look at how the brilliant Nikon Z6ii handles astro timelapse. This camera is an astro timelapse beast. I've been amazed at the built in features of this camera relating to shooting timelapse, and in particular how the auto features enable very smooth day to night sequences.
I'll be continuing this theme in a later video where I'll be looking at how I couple the camera with an assortment of motion timelapse gear.
I'm always keen to read your comments below.

Richard, this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on the Z6ii, so easy to follow, sequencing was super and you nailed each and every function. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much for your great comments Paul. It is mainly centred around the timelapse features but the camera itself is amazing.
+1
Wow Richard, the generosity with which you share information is a credit to you and has massively contributed to shortening the learning curve of astrophotographers such as myself. This video is certainly no exception. In summary, as a Z6 owner would you agree the only features I'm missing compared to the Mk II are 1) 4k video mode, 2) ability to plug in external power supply. Many thanks.
Thanks so much for your support Greg. Well the original Z6 does have the ability to record a 4k timelapse video but not at the same time as shooting RAWS. In the Z6 they made it possible to do both at once. Yes the ability to plug in usb power is the other one that relates to timelapse. Other than that: Two card slots and extended shutter speeds beyond 30 seconds are the others I can think of.
love this tutorial....very detailed,very impressive
Thanks so much for watching.
Wow! Your timelapse videos are beautiful! I have a Z6II and have been struggling with the day to night shots. I think you're the only person using the full capability of this camera. I'm going to use your methods. Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching Dan.
Thanks Richard for you great Instruktion! I tried it with my D780, nobody talks about, but it worked! Could capture a Day to Night Timelaps without any Flicker ...
Greetings to Down Under!
I'm really pleased you had great success with the D780 Werner. That's fantastic.
Wow, this is one video I will have to watch over and over until I fully understand it - thanks for explaining the ‘Interval’ timer though, that was something that confused me before! Thanks for the in-depth explanation of everything.
You're very welcome Andy, thanks heaps for watching.
Great informative Video, Richard! Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos! And of course, beautiful Timelapses!
Thanks so much for watching Diego
Excellent explanation of time lapse with the Amazing Z6II. Been watching you for a couple of years. You just keep getting better and better! Well done and Thank You!
You're very welcome, thanks so much for watching.
Thank you for the great info not only for the Z6 but also for the timelapses, Richard. And i love your timelapses!
Thanks heaps for your kind words, much appreciated.
Dear friend I had several of the problems you highlighted in your video. I was very scared of the possibility of recording a video separately from the images captured in Time Lapse RAW.
I had no idea this was possible. I always thought that there was a setting to get the Raw Time Lapse files and if I wanted to record a video I would have to use the other setting present in the Menu. This was incredible. Thank you for your help and for sharing this information.
Thank you so much for watching my friend, I really appreciate it.
I follow your videos quite some time and let me tell you, this one is superb in all ways.. inspiring, full detailed and I enjoy to watch it. Cheers from Portugal
I very much appreciate your great support Antonio.
You've done an excellent job on this video. Absolutely stunning. Many thanks, Richard.
You're very welcome my friend.
Outstanding. Brilliant. Amazing tutorial👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much for watching.
Sensacional walkthrough!! Awesome videos, love your content!! Keep on shooting!!
Thanks so much for watching.
Fantastic tutorial Richard! I'm always learning from you Sir! Thank you!
Thanks so much for tuning in Peter, I really appreciate it.
Great video Richard, so well explained. Can't wait to try it out 🌠
Thanks for watching as always Gurdeep.
Absolutely lovely work - inspirational in fact.
Thanks so much Mike.
You turn this type of photography into an art form Richard 👌 stunning time lapses 👍🌌
Thank you so much as always Garry.
Wow such beautiful work. You have some incredible dark skies and I love your inclusion of near objects for perspective in some of the shots. 👍🤗
Thanks so much for watching Keith.
Thanks Richard very informative And just beautiful time lapses
You're very welcome Jeff, appreciate your comments.
Thanks Richard, a really good dive into the world of timelapse. You have made me try a few things on my Sony I hadn't thought of. I love experiments!!!
Nothing wrong with that Levin. There is always something new to discover isn't there.
Another great video Richard. I did some reading up on the Z6 II capabilities for timelapse last year and found the camera to be an amazing and well equipped tool. I'm so glad I bought this camera.
Thanks for watching Jack. Yes it's a beauty for sure.
Excellent! 👍🏻👍🏻 Greatly appreciate this.
And I really appreciate you watching my friend.
I do love a good time lapse Richard. The Z6II is absolutely spot on for your astro time lapses. Especially using your good Z lenses. Well done on an awesome video mate
Thanks as always for your great comments Adrian. Really appreciate it mate.
Well beyond my dreams. Totally inspiring.
Thanks heaps for watching Barry
Love the info Richard you made something very complicated so we all can understand. Yes the Nikon Z series is one heck of a camera along with the lens. Look forward to more video. Cheers
I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement Frank, many thanks.
Fantastic advice, cheers
Thanks heaps for looking Craig.
That is such perfect timing Richard! Thank you very much because I always thought you done your time-lapse shots on your regular Z6, but if that don't have them features I'll get the Z6ii because I absolutely love your time-lapse shots, this camera and settings you explained look dummy safe for dummies like myself who get a bit bamboozled by settings sometimes. Again Thanks and please keep up your fantastic work you do on your Channel.
Thanks heaps for your kind comments Darren. I have done a lot of timelapses on the original Z6 and it's fantastic also . .just a couple of things added to the mk2 version.
Amazing timelapses, Richard. 👍
Thank you so much for watching Victor
wonderful comprehensive presentation on a timelapse/video with z i cameras. i will watching this over a couple of more times. Thanks
Thanks so much for watching. I love the Z cameras for timelapse.
I’m blown away by this video. Thank you for the information and the manner in which you delivered it: thoughtful, sensible, inspirational. I cannot wait to get outside with my new camera, and thanks to you I feel like I can achieve my goals.
I'm really pleased you got something out of it Tyler. Thanks for your comments.
Hola from Costa Rica, as always, amazing work and powerful/usefull information. We just keep learning with each of your videos. THANK YOU, your work is a true inspiration for many of us
I'm so pleased you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant Richard Thanks so much 😊
Thanks heaps Michelle
Fantastic video Richard! I have the Z6ll and I’ve been using the Timelapse + View too. I had no idea this camera had the capabilities you demonstrated in this video. Going to start experimenting with holy grail Timelapse’s in the P and A priority modes. Thanks for sharing this video!! :)
Thanks so much for watching Richard. I reckon you'll be surprised just how good it is.
Excellent presentation. Can't wait for the next one. i have had a number of Nikon DSLRs and was going to get the D500, but was looking at the Nikon Z cameras and you convinced me to seriously consider the Z6II. It was easy to understand your presentation. Thank you for helping me along the journey to the Z.
I'm so pleased you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Great informational video and beautiful timelapses Richard.
It took me few intents to understand the interval time when I started using the intervalometer of my D7100 back in 2015.... Now the Exposure smoother is a fantastic feature! I gave up long ago trying to shoot day to night time lapses because of all the work required to get rid of flicker. This feature in particular is a strong reason to consider upgrading my camera. Long life to Nikon!!
Yes it certainly is a game changer Roberto. Thanks so much for your comments.
Thanks for the video Richard.
I also use the Nikon Z6II... it's an amazing camera in features and image quality. Great hug from Brazil.
Yes it's a beauty for sure Rogerio.
Richard, this post was so good that I have watched it three times... just got my Z6ii.
I'm very pleased you enjoyed it Walter, thanks again for watching.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge about the Nikon Z6ii, I will try my best with mine!!!
It's a great camera. Thanks for watching.
Love this information. You are the man! I just picked up this camera body and the 14-24 2.8. Excited to give this all a go. Thank you!
You won't regret your purchase Dennis. Thanks so much for watching my friend.
Brilliant Video thanks so much. Inspired me to have a go. Will try this out over the next few weeks.
Good on you Ken. I very much appreciate you watching.
You have provided a lot of information. Thanks
Thanks so much for watching my friend.
Thanks Richard! You made a great usable presentation. I'll try it on the next clear night
Many thanks indeed for watching my friend.
Fantastic Video 🙏🏼
Thanks so much for watching
Thank you 😊
absolutely amazing, first time watch timelapse video with z camera. thank you
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it Ambrose
Very good and informative video. I have the Z7II and the same interval features there as well. Thanks for all the great info 😃👍🏻
Thanks so much for watching Eirik, really appreciated.
Thank you for your video, watched it again & again. My first attemps with my Nikon 6ii and the sigma 20mm f1,4 turned out amazing.
I'm really pleased to hear that George, thanks for watching.
Wonderful Richard!
I subscribed right after you presented at Frankston camera club, my D850 has several of the features you mentioned here so I am looking forward to trying out your tips.
Thanks and well done!
Thanks so much for your great support Peter, very much appreciate your comments.
Great advice! Thanks
Thanks so much for watching Nathan
Dear and respected Richard, I am grateful to you for your insightful lessons about Timelapse phptography, I have found it extremely helpful, blessings from the Universe!🙂
I very much appreciate your comments my friend, thanks for watching.
Brilliant video production, what passion! I am going to try night and astro photography.
Thanks for your kind comments my friend.
I just bought this camera so your guide will be very helpful then. Thanks!
I appreciate you watching.
Excellent video and summary of the Nikon Z6II Timelapse. I better try this on my Z7II some stage.. Thanks again and happy weekend
Thanks as always for watching Virat.
That was the most amazing tutorial Richard......thank you! It has inspired me to give timelapse a go. I also have a Z6ii and Nikkor 20mm which I am absolutely loving. I recently connected my camera to a friend's 8in diameter scope and photographed Omega Centauri. The results were out of this world 😅 Thanks again for such wonderful inspiration.
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it David. Thanks heaps for your comments.
An excellent summary, thank you! I think the Shots per Interval is to allow for HDR time lapses where the camera is set to take say 3 bracketed shots automatically, then Shots/Interval is also set to 3. I think that would be useful mostly for daytime time-lapses with lots of contrast and dynamic range. And yes, an advantage of mirrorless cameras is their much more sensitive light meters allowing readings when it gets dark. I found DSLRs would stall out at about a 6 second shutter speed in Auto then just underexpose after that. You had to manually override once it got into twilight. Or use the TimeLapse View. Mirrorless cameras mostly negate ramping intervalometers like the View. Except they do allow smoothly ramping the interval as well as the exposure. Clear skies!
Thanks as always for your greats insights Alan. I always very much appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience.
Just wow Richard….2nd time watching …great informative vlog.
Thanks so much Robert
One thing I love about the view + is the variable interval ! I usually use 25 seconds for night time and then 6 seconds for daylight hours
Yes that is a great feature John.
Superb work. All of it. Just found your channel. #stoked
Thank you so much for watching my friend.
Fab! Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching Dominic.
Dam Richard you’ve let everyone know the great Nikon mirrorless timelapse secrets that we have been using for years now just better than the DSLR’s
😲
But nah in all seriousness, this is a dam fine video and it’s great seeing so much effort out into timelapse.
A lot of effort goes into making it seamless and look next level.
Appreciate you putting this video out 🤙
Thanks so much for watching Josh, I really appreciate your comments.
I have to say I had very little expectations from this video. My concerns grew as you advised us with few ideas, but you made excellent job explaining why you are giving these ideas, knowing that they would raise some eyebrows. great! I will play the video definitely one more time and make notes to take away and start using some of your tips! thank you so much!
Thanks so much for watching Stefan, really appreciate it.
Owner of a brand new Z6 ii. This is so exciting and so motivational. Thank you for the video. I cannot wait to experiment.
Thanks so much for watching. Hope it's helpful.
11 out of 10 there Richard, a top notch tutorial, I only wish I had a Z6ii instead of the older Zr. Keep up the fantastic work.
Thanks as always for your kind words of encouragement Les. All the Z cameras are wonderful.
Brilliant video. I have been toying with the idea of getting into the mirrorless Nikon world after shooting for the last few years with my D750 with which I have done a bit of time lapse photography. Your video convinced me totally and you have nudged me closer to making a decision. Thank you!
You won't be disappointed. Thanks for watching.
Awesome
Will try with my nikon z6ii
Thanks for watching.
this video is awesome
Thanks so much for watching
Very well presented Richard, and I couldn't agree with you more regarding the Nikon Z6ii and the exposure smoothing. I use LRTimelapse to process my photos and with the time-lapse video feature with shooting enabled, it does such a remarkable job that I will often forgo manually post processing in LRTimelapse. I currently use a Move Shoot Move rotator, but need to look into the Weapon Slider gear to further enhance my time lapses. Thank you again for you fantastic work in making a fairly complex subject understandable.
Thanks heaps Todd, really appreciate your comments my friend.
Another great video! Well done mate 👍
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it Andrew.
As a hobbiest who is starting to understand what I am doing and what my camera is capable of, there is always so much to learn and your videos are always so informative.
I am lucky enough to have a Nikon Z6ii but i didn't really understand how good a camera it is for night photography I just bought what I could afford at the time.... lucky me ;).
You explain the features of the camera and how you set up your shots in a way that everyone can understand.
I have started dabbling in nightscape photography and loving what I am getting, no where near your quality but I'll get there one day.
Timelapse is something that I had never considered but I am eager to try it now.
Thank you so much for your awesome videos they are excellent for people like me who don't undertand the capabilities of the equipment I have.... there is so much to see in the night sky.
Thanks for your very kind and encouraging comments my friend. I really appreciate it.
Simply brilliant explainer!
I will use my D500 and D750 accordingly . With the function available.
The program tip was priceless.
Worth watching 👋🏻🇿🇦🎉
Thank you so much for watching Etienne.
I like LRTimelapse just as much as the next guy, but being able to go to bed or somewhere else and having the settings ramp is nice!
Yes my thoughts exactly. And I do that quite often.
I think mostly my Z 5 has same features. Very exciting video, thanks!
Yes I reckon the Z5 will have most of these as well Mikko. Thanks for watching.
Excellent video. I’ve been shooting time lapse on the older Z6 and I have my settings very similar to yours. With your video I’m going to try a few tricks and see if it can be made better.
Thanks so much for watching Chen, really appreciate it.
Thank you! Didn't know about the Program Mode function.
Thanks for watching. It works very well.
Great video. One feature that I use for both time lapse and my regular night photography is that the camera always goes to infinity focus when the camera is in autofocus and the power is turned off and back on. I find that it is always right on infinity focus after I power cycle the camera with either my 24-70 f/4 or my 20mm f1.8 lens attached. I never manual focus the stars anymore because all I have to do is power cycle the camera and it resets to infinity focus.
Yes that's a great feature that I also use a lot Ken. It's quite amazing what can be done with these new mirrorless cameras isn't it.
Thanks for the tip shooting day-night-day in P mode! Never tried it before! I will check it out but sounds very promising. Agree with these mirrorless modern cameras are excellent for timelapses. No longer any problem with flickering I had plenty of before for ex when using Canon DSLRs. Great channel. Keep it going!
Thanks so much for watching Natalia. Appreciate your comments.
Excellent video Richard! I have been considering buying the Nikon z6ii for a while now but there isn’t many videos out there that explain why I should be buying it, till now that is, your video has shown me so many of its benefits in a proper working scenario which is exactly what I want in a video. I hope Nikon are paying you handsomely or this because you are SELLING IT! Thanks again for such an in depth video, perfect 😁👍
Thank you so much for your kind comments Duncan. Unfortunately no kickback from Nikon on this one.
This video sold me on the extra cost of the z6ii for my backup camera.
Thanks so much for watching.
Awesome video about timelapses, ome my favorite subjecr in your channel.. Now thanks to it I have a better undersatnding. But I confess that I will have to watched couple more times ti get it right. Many thanks for it
Yes there was a lot of information in there Luis. Thanks for your support.
My Z6 will shoot *either* timelapse video *or* the regular timelapse, not both like the Z6II can. Like you, I'm very happy with the videos it produces, but I never even thought of trying a timelapse in P-mode! I've had this camera since the day they came out, and I'm still discovering new things about it. I can't wait to go try it now! Great information, and great video-- I especially loved your long timelapse with the pan and tilt of the Milky Way. :)
Thanks so much for your great comments Laurie. Yes these are wonderful cameras and full of surprises sometimes.
In the states the Z6ii is on sale for $300 off. Couldn't resist any longer and purchased one yesterday. I had to come back to this video for time-lapse instructions using my new camera. Thanks Richard. Can't wait to give day to night a try with the Z6ii. Already have new moon, now if only the clouds will clear. In the past I have used the Nikon D810, Foolography Unleashed, cellphone, LRTimelapse, and a lot of hours to make a day to night time-lapse.
Good on you Jerry. I'll be very keen to see how you go.
Thank You👍😊😊😊
Thanks for watching my friend
Great information on setting up for time-lapse. Really makes me want a Z6 II. I've been thinking about upgrading to a mirrorless, and this is just one more reason.
I had no trouble following along when you went through the intervalometer settings. I bought my first intervalometer on a lark. Mostly I wanted wireless shutter release capability for lunar photography. I saw a Pixel 283 on Amazon for $25 as a "used-like new" item, so I bought it, not knowing anything about its intervalometer functions or how valuable the intervalometer would be - i had not yet started astrophotography. Its instructions are anything but user-friendly, especially to someone inexperienced. Several videos later, as well as experimentation on my own, I had a thorough understanding of how to use one. I typed up my own set of instructions that demystified the how-to, which my brother loves, because he was as bewildered as I was. After I bought my Nikon D600, I had to decipher how its built-in intervalometer worked, so I updated my instruction sheet with a section for my Nikon. It's functionally the same as yours, but without the advanced features that yours has. I'm glad to have seen your tutorial - helps to confirm my understanding of how to use it. I prefer using my external intervalometers, but if I start messing with external flash, I'll have to use the built-in intervalometer, since the external intervalometers and flashes use the same port 😞.
Thanks as always for watching Derek. I very much appreciate your comments.
A fantastic timelaps during the night.
Thanks so much for watching.
Great video Richard, almost enough to get me trying time lapses 😂
Haha, well you'll need a lot more hard drives if you do Eric ...!!!!
I'm a little late to the game here but this is the best video I have seen about time lapse with a Nikon. Easy to apply to my Z8. Thanks!
Better late than never. I appreciate you watching my friend.
My old Pentax K1 does time-lapse to 4k movie in camera, also does star trails (individual or complete composite) and has Astrotracer which is a built in star tracker... That exposure smoothing is a nice feature for sure!!
Thanks heaps for watching Tim, really appreciate it.
Very informative v8deo ,thanks f0r your time. Now to adjust to my em1mk 3.
I wish I could help you with that Phillip .. but I have no idea about the EM1mk3.
@@nightscapeimages.richard haha its ok
Another excellent video, the Z ii is a real beast. I’m going to do some further testing the Canon R5 and see how it compares. Well done, enjoyed the video:)
Thanks as always Alan. Yes I reckon the R5 is awesome as well.
Great tutorial I’ll try that ISO feature.
Thanks so much for watching.
I've just upgraded to the Z6ii, I can't wait for Milky way season now having watched this video, there is a 150 year old railway viaduct in Wales (UK) I plan to have as my foreground, Its beautiful on Its own, I'm hoping It will look stunning with the Milky Way above, superbly informative video
Thanks so much for watching my friend. The Z6ii is a wonderful camera for nightscape photography .. I'm sure your old viaduct will be amazing.
Hi Richard, I had already seen the video, but now (in November/2022 after your nomination) it became much clearer to me. I will do some tests with my D850 which has the same menu settings as the Z6 II for time lapse. Hug.
Hope it goes well Jorge
Amazing videos Richard. I've got the z6ii and the nikkor Z 20mm f/1.8s lens I'm going to try this some evening 😀
That's a really good combination Majika. I'll be keen to see how you go. Thanks for watching.
Richard your timing is perfect as I'm looking to setup the D850 as a 2nd camera for timelapse. While I've used most of the settings you outlined, I've never connected the dots for an automated transition between day and night. Thus, another stellar presentation that helps fastrack things for me. I'll be doing a test-run tonight in preperation for the upcoming new moon. Once again, thank you so much for sharing your insight and enthusiasm.
You're very welcome Rob. I'll be keen to see how it goes. The D850 is a wonderful camera but as it isn't mirrorless it may not have the same result as the Z series . . let me know your results.
@@nightscapeimages.richard From what I'm seeing, Live Mode with an external intervalometer needs to be used. You don't get the full tomato though as exposure smoothing and interval priority is lost. Still odd as all the settings are exactly the same with the D850, suggesting that it should function in native mode.
@@robb7342 Fair enough. I think the obvious difference between the cameras is that the Z series is mirrorless. Therefore the functionality for timelapse is easier.
Great video as a Z6 user I have found this very useful
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it Arnie. Thanks heaps for watching.
Another video very well explained, I have a Z7 II and Z 5 has precisely the same features, they just differ, the Z 7 II does 4k 60 frames per second and the Z 5 does 4k 30 frames per second and both can be powered by a Power Bank and I've done excellent timelapses with both, Nikon has taken a big step forward in timelapse over other brands. I'm waiting for the video with Zeapon Sliders. Thanks Richard
Thanks a lot for your comments Mario, really appreciated.
Video saved for future reference. I’m a Z5 user and it has the ability to power by usb and I just checked and it does have the exposure smoothing feature as well. Just got my 20mm f1.8 last week and now I need to go practice.
Thanks a lot for watching David. That Z5 is a great little camera.
Thanks Richard, I'll have to watch this one a couple of time to get this to sink in 🤥 Great to veiw
Yes I had to watch it quite a few times when creating it to make sure it made sense to me as well Wayne ..!!!!
I have the D780 and will explore it's features now. Thanks.
I'll be keen to see how you go Guy
