I have watched a good number of reviews of the Panasonic Lumix GX8, but I must say, yours is the most thorough and well-rounded. I bought a used GX8 before Christmas and I absolutely love it. I had a GX85 and traded it for another camera a few years ago. I always pined for that GX85 after I traded it. No more of that now. I am really enjoying the GX8. It seems to have a better grip and is just a better walkabout camera for me. Thank you for a great rundown of the camera. You noted a few items that I did not realize and I will have to look into the next time I take it out. Have a lovely 2025. All the best.
About 6 months ago I sold my eos 5d mkiii 70 - 200mm f2.8, 24 - 105mm and 50mm f1.4 and Upgraded to the GX8 annd equivalent lenses. I travel alot. A combination of weight, features, video quality and performance made it a no brainer. Have not looked back since !!!
No ....there has been a firmware update .....I now set my e-shutter to auto and the camera decides if there is going to be shutter shock and use"s e-shutter in that case......It has never happened since then again.....Loving my camera !!!
@@dallinpeterson7 I know you asked this question a year ago, but in case others are investigating micro four thirds and have the same question: I travel a lot and have been a m43 user since 2009. A couple of years ago I sold a few lenses I used to travel with and bought the Lumix 14-140, which is just about the perfect all-around lens for travel. I have 9 or so various lenses for m43, but still bring the 14-140 with me pretty much everywhere I go.
On Febuary of 2018 I mafe my decision to buy this GX8 camera after watching your well explanatory review. Mine was bought almost new with 14-140 mm 3.5 to 5.6 lens. I am willing to buy some lenses to get more of its great foto and video capabilities: 8-18 mm, f/2.8-4.0 for wide shots 20 mm f/1.7 for compactness 42.5 f/1.7 for portraits Keep doing this great work!
Hi Adrian, the problem of focusing you refer to can easily be overcome by setting up the camera to use back button focus, instructions can be found online. It nails focus instantly in any shooting situation, great video, thanks. Rob.
I really liked your video, both the clear presentation and the content. I came across it by accident, somewhat late perhaps as I already own 2 GX8 bodies. I quite like the function buttons but not particularly where Panasonic chose to put them. The display button is my biggest bugbear as I keep accidentally pressing it with the heel of my hand whereupon it brings up the level guide across the screen. This placement of buttons has also been a minor irritation on previous Lumix models I have owned such as the G2, G6 and G7. However, having said that I have had some very pleasing results with this camera. I have sold off all my original Lumix lenses and now mainly use the newish Leica 12-60mm f2.8, and the Lumix 35-100mm f2.8. The dual stabilisation has been very useful in photography in cathedrals, with sharp results even at 1/15th of a second handheld. I haven't experienced the lock-up problem with either of them, but I did have it happen a couple of times on my LX100 (another great little camera). I eventually found that it only did this when I was using my spare non-Panasonic battery. Having owned Canon SLRs in the past I never dreamed that in future my photography would be centred on Panasonic, but as you can tell from the above I am now rather keen on them, each model significantly improving on the previous ones.
I ditched my Canon 5D + lenses in favor of the GX7 now upgraded to GX8 and will never go back. Awesome results and I agree with all the comments for using mirrorless cameras.
Nice presentation. Just one critical observation. Your side by side comparison of the two lenses makes the common error of saying they are equivalent. when comparing lenses designed and used with different sensor formats you have to calculate for the crop factor, BOTH IN FOCAL LENGTH AND APERTURE. i.e. f2.8 in mft is f5.6 in FF (2 x crop factor)
This is true. I still own the gx8 and several lenses but I've had to be honest with myself about the actual aperture I'm using. Just know you can't be shooting so much in dark areas unless using a decent, fixed focal lens with a good aperture.
excellent and well balanced review Adrian. I've used MFT for about 7 years now. I have the Olympus Omd Em1 but I want a camera with the fully articulating screen plus I realize that I prefer the Panasonic colour science compared to the Olympus (I used to have the Lumix GH2). Cheers from British Columbia....PS the Sigma 30mm f1.4 looks like a very good deal and with great iq too.
I have a Nikon D600 and the Panasonic GX8 and will take the Panasonic with me over the Nikon 99% of the time. Love this camera although the Fn buttons are not always to my liking, accidentally touched the Fn5 button and lost the use of my rear adjustment knob so I couldn't set my shutter speed in manual mode until I figured out which button I had touched. Overall picture quality is great, as you mentioned and the camera is fun to use.
Lol I use this camera in my studio every day! My one wish is this camera with the S1/ nikon d750 sensor in it it's the same sensor in case you were wondering. The ergonomics of it are unbeatable! It sells second hand for more than its replacement! I have a 750D but it hardly ever use it. I think the gx7 and the gh3 take better jpegs more pleasing to look at under controlled lighting situations. Not sure why but they are just more appealing to me. Have 2 gx7s can't sell them as they still perform well. Not tried the G9 looking forward to is though! And also not tried the S1/ S1R. I use minolta lenses on my Panasonic cameras mostly with fotodiox adapters. Do what works for you! Drop the preconceptions they are misconceptions!! Oh and live with the lockup! Drop the battery and it's fixed it's pros outweigh this issue! They are cheap enough I have a few you can't go wrong! :)
Yes very interesting..I was already half-convinced and curious about this system, but now I'm definitely going to add a gx8 to my kit. Nice video, thanks for sharing, and.. keep up the good work! 👍
based on your smile i did choose well with mine gx8, it is my first DLSM, the very first digital camera besides my phone. I decided for this format because there is a wide selection on cheap prime lenses, but they are incredible good lenses for not too much money, the price for a single nikkor 500 mm aps-c cost twice as much as my entire equipment: the body, one lumix g x telephoto up to 150mm, and two primes 60mm sigma and 25mm panasonic. Right now i am looking for a 14mm for 180 USD. It has been super fun to go out and take pictures of people, to some of them i even send their pictures on whatsapp. I am very pleased with this camera system.
Interested in your lenses as I'm new to the system. I will be getting the 20mm pancake lens, I thing it's incredible. Good luck, keep us posted. If you want to share some pics you should come over to my photography group facebook.com/groups/slrcoaching/
Hi thanks for the good honest vid. I have a Gx80 that I love using, but since getting hold of the 100-400mm (very good little miracle), I am considering the gx8 mainly for the better viewfinder and handling. Gx8 looks a bit big in comparison to the gx80, will need to try one.
having trouble with focus on this camera - even when I use manual...seems to be fine in good light but not good in low light...I have great lenses too...can you post some videos about this...ae/af lock-focus modes and exposure modes....
Would you (or your viewers) have any idea why I can't upgrade the firmware on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 to ver. 2.2? It currently has ver. 1.1. I've downloaded the upgrade from Panasonic's website twice and followed the procedure precisely. Fully-charged battery, SD card formatted in camera, etc. I sure could use some help with this. Thanks!
I agree with everything you mentioned in your video - both the positive as well as negative aspects -, especially the excessive number of FN buttons, which to my great annoyance interfere with my picture-taking as accidentally touching them changes the set-up making me look like a fool because I simply don't know which FN button Ihad touched. What you did not mention is that the camera is not suited for fast sports photography like car racing. Yes, it has the 4K feature but as I prefer single shot activation of the shutter button I revert to my trusty Nikon D300S which has never failed me. The drawback: with a long lens it weighs a ton! But the GX8 just isn't fast enough. We'll be going to the Six Hours of Spa (vintage car racing) in September. I take about 800 pictures a day. Image sorting out 800 shots in 4K mode. That's about 24.000 pikkies! Solution: for action photography the Nikon and for filming the GX8. My favourite camera? The little Lumix LX7. Considering the tiny sensor size and knowing the limitations of the camera the photos are mostly sensational. Lefty

Adrian Salisbury thanks Adrian for your reply. Really appreciate it. But what I meant was how do you set the custom settings and such (which is what I should I wrote in thr first place). I'm training to be a wedding photographer and just need some tips...

I'm using it all the time for that, great! It just doesn't have IBIS for video, only photos, but that's not an issue for me as I use it on a tripod
I ended up returning it and picked up the GH5. :-) I think both are good, but the GH5 seems to be a bit better. The only downside is it doesn't have that tilt screen.
and it's double the price!
Yeah the price hurt, but I am pretty happy with it. It's internal stabilization is pretty awesome.
thanks mate I am going to trade in my Canon gear
Does the gx8 have unlimited recording?
How do you set up your GX8 for the best results? No one???
Simz G Aperture priority, low as possible f number. ISO 200. That’s a decent starting point, is that what you mean?
Adrian Salisbury thanks Adrian for your reply. Really appreciate it. But what I meant was how do you set the custom settings and such (which is what I should I wrote in thr first place). I'm training to be a wedding photographer and just need some tips...
Ah I see. Totally depends on what you find you’re wanting to change quick. It’s personal to you 😊
800 shots raw+fine on one battery, still one bar...
