  • OCD latches onto the things most significant to the sufferer. Sometimes this might occur around real life events, where a sufferer wonders how they could possibly accept uncertainty about something they deem as a real moral failing. Alternatively, this might occur around events completely fabricated by the sufferer, as they have spent so much time making sure the feared event has not taken place that they worry it could have actually happened. This town hall will discuss the OCD subtypes of Real Event and False Memory OCD. We have been receiving many requests on these topics. And while different, we look forward to showcasing the fact that they are both simply different forms of OCD that can be treated with ERP. We will offer perspectives from clinicians, as well as advocates with lived experience on these topics.

This is such an informative video. Things I’ve taken away from
-ERP - sit with thought and worst scenarios get used to it
    - Self compassion
    - objectivity - innocent till proven guilty not the other way around
    - uncertainty blanket
    - real memories can merge with intrusive thoughts
    - drop the rumination (a compulsion)
    - allow yourself to live a life of joy regardless of what might happen
    - we don’t choose thoughts and feelings , they choose us
    - take the risk of living life and I won’t wait for a knock on the door, or someone to find out. And if they do I’ll apologise and move on

I got hit with I guess this type over 2 months ago and have been going over a few decades trying to figure something out. Out of the blue I feel like I've done something. As time goes on I'm kind of living life as if I did do it and I might not have. This always affects the people and things I care about the most. If it keeps going there will be nothing left to care about

    - look for healthy non ocd noise within ocd thoughts - 99% is not 100%. ‘It’s going to happen!!’ would be improved being less absolute - ‘I’m scared it’s happened’

What are other people doing - do they just move on? ‘Ah there’s not enough evidence for that *see u later intrusive thought / real event memory*. Am I willing to allow the uncertainty to be a cloud , practise it which helps move on?

Understanding OCD is like opening a very obvious spam message and engaging with it, so the computer allows more in and so we respond more. Find a way to change the algorithm .
Guilt and precious real life experience can fuel false memory

What do you do about feeling the need to confess something that maybe a real event or false memory? Even if I were to confess I would have to confess that I'm not sure or not?

This is a great question to ask on our next livestream on Tuesday! Would you like to submit your question to our form at iocdf.org/peaceofmind?

My brother has turned himself in numerous times for what I believe are false memories. There’s never been any evidence to support his claims, so nothing has ever been done. But he’s also schizophrenic. I think once they find that out, they just write it all off as imagined.
My gut instinct is that if you feel the need to turn yourself in, it probably didn’t happen. Most people, when they commit a crime, don’t want to be caught. And if you’re remembering something that’s causing you grief/anxiety, I doubt you would have done it to begin with. That’s just my rationale.

@@elspastico1546 1st thing to sort out . Is to realise that the voice you have become accustomed to accept as your own in internal dialogue may not be your own. . . Then the whole starts to make sense .

Those are pronouns! They are words that are used in the place of a person's/object's name!
Ex: Steve went to [his] house. [He] is busy.
Ethan Smith is just telling others what pronouns to use for him. :)
