Six years late to the party, but this is great info for my latest creative enterprise. I've got a lot of marshes and cattail patches to visit, and I'm going with the saw. Thanks for all the tips!
Looking forward to learning to basket weave and all that comes with it. It’s truly an art form and I’m in awe of people like Caleb who can do such awesome things. Native Americans, and Natives from around the world were so skilled in this art form and many others. I find that once I get interested in something, it’s quite an exciting thing for me and it leads me to research it and learn as much as I can. But, in turn, that leads me to other interests and hobbies, such as basket weaving. I’m very into gardening and self sufficiency and harvesting and preserving fruits and other edibles. Thus, on a walk in a wooded area, there was an amazing bunch of blackberry bushes full of ripe fruit. I wished I had something to carry some home…like a basket maybe ! So I started to research how to make a little basket for berries. Thus, my interest in basket weaving now :) don’t know where this will lead. But, in the meantime, I’m learning where and how to get the materials and how to weave simple baskets from amazing people like you. Thank you so much.
I don't know why you think a tool is needed in harvesting cattails, but since I harvest the root too, I just pull the whole thing out by hand. It doesn't take long to get enough, and I have the rest of the plant too.
Because we are just after the leaves and it's much faster than pulling out and processing bundle after bundle of leaves for making lodge covers and such. It's about economy of time and resources.
From Vancouver Island, Courtenay and I have crocosmia leaves...can I use same method fir drying them? And fir iris and daylilies? Gets cool at nite and early am, should I lay an old sheet down on grass first and then cover at Night cuz of dew? I am going to use them as a weft for weaving on my loom
@@CanadianBushcraftChannel Hi Caleb! I've been looking around at the right time of year to harvest cattails for basket making. I have found late August to early September. I am in the PNW in Oregon. What time of the year have you found is best to harvest the leaves? Thank you and I just found you via The Hunter's Journey! Super excited for this class!
So smart. I admire people who are self sufficient and are knowledgeable
of nature and survival skills. I’m learning.

Sweet!!! Thanks for sharing. Gonna go harvest and start on my next cattail basket. I've made about 6 so far, and they keep getting better.
Thanks.I’ve often wondered how these could be used. Great detailed talk.

Appreciate the history lesson as much as the practical uses of cattail Caleb. Some artistic talent there as well! Megwitch.
This was very nicely done! Informative and clear! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Look at that beautiful Golden Rod herb growing beside it!!!
Very nice video Caleb like always, full of information and guidance. Thank you for this one. ATB

Great imfo .very articulate mr.K
Is that Goldenrod right in front of the cattail...? I see this yellow plant all the time where I live.
It does look like goldenrod to me. We have them all over in Michigan ☺
Yes it looks like it. Great to forage as well.

Did you try?
Great vid!! Can harvest be done later in the season? ie, Oct, with the same results?
Definitely not. Once the leaves die, they begin to rapidly rot, to disperse as much nutrients back into the water for next year's growth.

@@jessicabaxter5646 hi Jessica! Typically we just wait until the tips of the leaves turn brown. Around our part of North America, that's right now.
Hello, fellow Canadian
Thx for video!

Hi. Great video. I am wondering why I can't download the vid?
+Elljay Q No idea, have you tried other video downloading programs?
very useful video but you need to bring the camera closer to the cattail , its too far away.
❤️☀️😘👍🌈🌞
Background sounds can be deafening.
Isnt it dangerous to harvest cattail...due to snakes
No more so than walking any path.
Snake avoid people if given the chance.
