I was 20 when this came out. We had never seen anything like that alien design and set design. The creature's just not recognizable to the human brain in the shadows. In fact, even after someone pointed out to me that it's sitting, swinging in the chains over Brett's head as he gets near Jonsey, it wasn't until the video feeds were sophisticated enough for me to rewind that scene that I finally spotted it.
It's my favorite horror movie, high tension and organic suspense with only small bursts of gore to remind you what you're up against. The only other I rate as high is a film called Pontypool. Only watch if you have access to very good sound equipment though. Preferably with closed captions. It's mind-blowing and unique.

Ridley Scott said he was making THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE in space, where the crew were being taken out one at a time, and there is "no place to hide." When this movie came out, none of this had ever been imagined before, and it blew everyone's mind.
Ridley wanted to stay close to the artwork of H. R. Giger, who created the alien as a Bio-Mechanoid species. His artwork was on the "dark side," and Ridley Scott made Giger world famous with the movie.

*"When this movie came out, none of this had ever been imagined before, and it blew everyone's mind."*

When the Alien was hiding in the escape pod and not coming out to attack, people always seem confused by why it's content to just stay there. But in my opinion, it makes it more realistic. How many times have you ever been in a situation where you're trying to kill some scary thing that found it's way into your house, like a creepy bug, reptile, rat, bat, etc.. and *every* time, what do they do? You end up spotting them somewhere being perfectly still. They must know you can see them, but they just sit there as you get your broom, or shoe or whatever.. and that awful feeling you get as you devise your plan of action and steel your nerves to gather the courage to initiate the confrontation. That's the way it always goes. That's how invasive pests act when they're in your environment. Imagine having to deal with an Alien pest though? I don't think a broom, a shoe, or a can of Raid would be sufficient.

Alien is considered horror, with a haunted house monster in the closet vibe. Aliens is more re sci Fi action with elements of horror. To be fair it's harder to recreate a horror monster movie once we know the monster. Why horror sequels are uncommon and often not great. unless it's a slasher movie that goes on FOREVER. Like Halloween and Friday the 13th.

Some of the other channels talk and joke around too much and they end up not paying attention to the movie nor absorbing the ambiance the filmmakers are trying to set. Thankfully, those channels aren't too common.
Make sure to watch the Director's Extended Cut of Aliens. Back in 1986 when the film was released, there wasn't a lot of multiplex theaters around, so the studio encouraged filmmakers to keep the movies short so they could have more showings in a day. The extended cut is James Cameron's preferred cut; so don't go with the theatrical cut because it omits a lot of relevant backstory.

If you consider Blade Runner, Ridley Scott's next movie-another Ridley Scott film and also without computer-generated effects-you'll realize special effects could be just fine back then around the beginning of the 1980's.

H R Giger was the artist behind "the Alien" creature. It was inspired by nightmares that he would sketch out upon waking.
Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
AND YOU THINK THIS IS JUST A MOVIE ?
Revelation 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
REMEMBER THE SCENE WITH DALLAS SAYING "KILL ME"?
6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

Because the whole movie is essentially a big body horror movie (aspects of the alien are… sexual, the ships Ai command room is meant to replicate a womb, etc etc) when Ash rolled up the magazine he wasn’t trying to kill her. He was trying to rVpe her but since hes a robot, he didn’t have the.. ahem “parts” to do that. So he chose a different route. Sexual assault & rVpe are at a base level, what this movie is themed after, complete and total violation of your body, heavy psychological scars dealing with it.
This is what the director said about that scene, he said people often thought ash was. Trying to kill, but it wasn’t the directors intention originally and it wouldn’t have worked to kill her that was anyways. Ripley was the one person who was bucking the system, making Ash’s job harder, was a strong woman not taking his shit. Ash wanted to violate and control, not kill.

That is a pretty interesting take, we definitely didn't catch that with this first watch through!
