Kubota GR2020 - Adjusting Front Axle Pivot and Explaining Glide Steer

  • Step by Step!
    Today we'll be Adjusting the Front Axle Pivot on this Kubota GR2020G Riding Lawn Tractor.
    Follow the steps shown in this video. As per the manuals instructions, we torqued the front axle bolts marked with a number 7 on the head to 36lbs-ft of torque.
    This mower is also equipped with "Glide Steer" which allows this 4x4 mower to turn similar to how a Zero-Turn riding lawn mower turns.
    The clutches in the rear transmission are engaged by rods that connect to the front spindles. When you turn the steering wheel to the left for example, this rod is pushed back, engaging the Glide Steer lever on the left side of the transmission, which engages the clutch packs, and cuts power to that inner left wheel, allowing it to "slip."

    I saw that JD hood on the bench in your intro and wondered about it. Now I know what’s coming up next time. 😉 As for the four bolts, if I found one loose I would normally have suspected manufacturer quality control error. Due to the fact that they require periodic torquing I would assume they have a tendency to loosen over time. For that reason I would be removing one at a time, cleaning up and applying threadlocker before tightening. I’d also torque to the highest setting. In this case I don’t think a diagonal pattern would be necessary though. One more thing - that owner’s manual is great! Showing every maintenance procedure in detail is priceless! Really demonstrates the quality of the manufacturer. 👍🔧🧰

      I believe the manual says to torque those bolts (adjust the front axle pivot) every 100hrs or so, ideally thread locker would be good, but if you re-torqued it down the road and broke the seal, you'd have to reapply it. Thanks for watching!

    It would be nice to have service manuals for all the machines that come in. Sometimes you have to decline a repair just due to lack of experience with a particular model. Great vid Jake!

      Yea I've absolutely declined repairs before, specifically on a John Deere All wheel steer riding mower that needed transmission seals. I fully serviced it for the customer, then it went to the John Deere dealer for the transmission repair. I didn't want to take any chances!

    I sprang the $140 for the service manual for my new GR2120 (diesel version of the GR2020). There actually is a measurement that is called out to determine if shims need to be added or removed from the bottom bolts. There is no mention about the top bolts so they don't seem to be involved in this measurement. The measurement is taken between the front axle bracket and frame and needs to be 81.0 - 83.0mm. The torque range of the bolts is specified as 35.5 to 41.2 ft-lbs. If the looseness in the front wheel is still present after torqueing, a shim needs to be removed from each side of each bottom bolt.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  3 місяці тому +1

      @@barryshonbeck2006 thanks for the info! So it appears my torque specs were within the correct range (after reading through their bolt torque chart) and the upper right bolt on this one was really loose I believe, so I would recommend checking them!

    Nice video I have to take my front axle out of my gr2120 to replace the pivot seals. What was the extra tank next to the transmission? I didn’t see that in any of the parts manuals or assembly drawings. Also there is an adjustment for the glide steer transmission clutches to make sure they disengage at the right time. Always good to check this with a torque wrench. The process is covered in the service manual.

      The black box at the back? That's the charcoal canister for the emissions. If you have the diesel model, it may be different than the gasoline version. And yes this one barely has any hours on it, it's a very nice unit. I'm curious how many hours your machine has on it that it would need the pivot seals replaced)? Thanks for watching!

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  2 роки тому

      Probably wouldn't hurt, but you'd have to remove the bolts completely to apply that, so it would be added time. The bottom bolts are quite easy to access, I'd have to look at the parts diagram to see if there's nuts on those top bolts, might be harder to get too.

    Your caliper is a dial caliper, not a vernier caliper. A vernier caliper has no dial.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  2 роки тому

      I believe it is a Vernier caliper, simply with a digital readout, because it still uses the vernier scale, named after Pierre Vernier. The Vernier scale is "a visual aid to take an accurate measurement reading between two graduation markings on a linear scale." I understand the digital readout takes the place of the dial, but the end result is the same, it's still using the linear scale.

    • @jjohnhoosier8631
      @jjohnhoosier8631 2 роки тому +1

      I see the main scale, I do not see a vernier scale.

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 2 роки тому

      There are only two type of vernier calipers dial and digital but that is for sure a Vernier caliper

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 2 роки тому

      I see your point though the caliper is still called a vernier caliper even when the lower vernier scale is not visible since the digital vernier does not require it since it reads out the in between dimensions. I have seen some dial vernier calipers with and without the lower scale but digital and dial are much easier for a lot of people to read out. The plain style without the dial or digital mode are hard to read without training and good eyesight.
