Kinda wish yall had watched 08th MS Teach over Gundam Wing. For one, it's Gundam Vietnam... the other is that it's at least Universal Century, so it'd be in the same continuity as the other first episodes you saw. That and 08th MS Teach was released the same year as Macross Plus, Gundam Wing came out the year before.
When you get to Macross 7 you will be so confused like. It gets to exotic weapons aka music as a weapon. Also the jets are called VF's or Valkuries which you saw in the original series and like the 3rd variant of its kind which it is called the VF-1 Valkurie, the other earlier ones are called the VF-0 and the VF-X1 of course basing the VF from the F-14 Tomcat which you get to see in Macross Zero(set before SDF Macross). Plus the other variants like the YF series and the SV series. Examples the SV-51 and the YF-19 Macross pluss and onwords are set after SDF Macross. So Space War 1 finished and the some of the Zentradi become allies of humanity, Guld is a Zentradi and has been intergrated into human society. The tests in the YF-21 where used so that they could test the BDS systems which allowed the pilot to have basically 360 view as his mind is connected to the aircraft which allowed the pilot to use all the cameras in the YF-21 (used to see underneath the aircraft and behind the aircraft) which provided more situational awareness. To compensate with the controls of the aircraft they used BDS system to be able to control the airfraft with their minds. Anyways Macross 7 gets really weird real quick but after that in Macross Frontier and to Macross Delta they got rid of the weirdness excluding the Idols and singing as that is part of Macross blood.
I don't think it's a really fair comparison due to how different the two shows are. Their mechas may be a bit similar but the show's focus is really different. Gundam places an emphasis on real robot and horrors of war rather than romance and other aspects of the shows. While they are present, they aren't the main topic. In comparison, Macross is more like a super robot show where the main emphasis is on the teenagers who control them and their private lives. That being said, Macross gets really weird after some point in time and a little difficult to understand while Gundam is a bit more easier to follow since everything is split into different universes. As for the mecha, this is really difficult since the thing is, Gundam is a real type robot and thus has way too many restrictions that Macross doesn't have. For one, Gundam is unable to recharge or replenish its weapons on the go while Macross can do it all in combat. Another thing is Gundam's weaponry. Most of the weapons in Gundam are either magazine based or power type weapons that draw energy from the main machine itself. These weapons are usually hand held so they can't be used if the weapon is loss or if the machine loses their combat arm. In comparison, Macross has many built in weapons that do a similar amount of damage to a Gundam. Since they are built in, it's not possible to disable the machine's combat ability by removing the limbs and can continue fighting whereas the Gundam is unable to. While Gundam does have a lot of mechas that could end Macross if they wanted to, those machines usually aren't allowed in comparisons like these because then, Gundam would win every fight. At this point, we're pretty much putting a real type robot(Gundam) against a machine that is closer to a super robot masquerading as a real type robot(Macross). Because of this, even though I'm a Gundam fan, Macross really has this in the bag. A better mecha comparison would have been Gundam vs Knightmare frames(Code Geass) since the tech and weapon gap isn't that big(though size is.).
Personally it doesn't seem fair to me to compare an OVA to a tv series. Conmparing Plus to 08th MS Team would have had much more sense. Or Wing to Macross 7
Next year we’re aiming to do a video on the 2000/2010s iterations of the shows, so we will try to stick to the normal series instead of OVAs. If you have any suggestions, please let us know. The difference in budget was very noticeable in terms of the animation, but it was the characters and story that swung it for us. Thanks for watching Joe
Yeah can't compare almost movie quality animation with a TV show. They could have done Endless waltz. Macross has good points but I think the singing thing went to far in the other series. It made sense in original to certain extent. They don't know how to follow through. Frontier was okay
I'm a Robotech nerd so maybe I am biased. The VF-1 vs the RX-78, the RX-78 would absolutely win!!! The GU-11 55mm Gun Pod would be half as powerful as a Zaku Machine Gun which is 120mm. Doesn't have enough pew pew to penetrate the Gundam. But the SDF-1 when fully functional could easily take on both the Zeon and Earth space fleets combined.
Yeah, the RX-78 is quite powerful, but one mustn't underestimate Macross tech, especially alien over-technology. Hell, the VF-1s were made from the same over-technology that the Macross itself was built from. The GU-11 55mm Gunpod you would think would be half as powerfull as the Zaku's machine gun, but don't forget, the Zentradi must've had armor material much stronger than whatever was available Earthside and they're good against Zentradi battle pods, no problem. And one cannot underestimate the almighty power of the Itano Circus.
If I understand what you said correctly, you were wondering why they were testing the YF-21 against the older model from the opening? if I did hear that correctly that is a little off, the old model is the *V*F-11 not the *Y*F-19 which in the origional OVA release of Macross Plus was down for repairs or something during the inital YF-21 texts/demonstrations as the last test pilot that Isamu Dyson was replacing crashed it, appearently the test model is "too much plane" for most pilots to handle. so in essense the differences between the two actual test models is that the YF-21 uses advanced control setups to improve pilot performance, while the YF-19 just ups the craft's performance to the extreme while keeping the control setup standard (which has the old tried and true advantages compared to the BDS/BDI system which has issues determining the difference between purposeful thoughts and idle, which is what caused the incident where Guld pushed down Isamu's Thunderbolt (VF-11) by accident, going 'well right now if i did this i could - wait no!' EDIT: oh and recalled the name of the craft, the common term is Valkrye, with the more technical being Variable Fighter (thus VF)

I think Gundam wing should have won because of zero system and epyon system more Gundam have you got say wing zero and Gundam epyon
