- After spending a couple of days on the range with my new vortex impact 4000 rifle mounted laser rangefinder I am excited to bring you my initial impressions! The impact 4000 combines a rangefinder, on board weather station and ballistic calculator into a single unit that is relatively affordable. In this video I'll take you through the process of getting the rangefinder out of the box, installed on the rifle and then send rounds down range so you can see just how well it performs for me. I wanted to note that holding .8 mils under your target is not correct unless you are at 100 yards.
The offset will always be 3 inches, but .8 mils is not always 3 inches offset.
Holding slightly low (3 inches) is not a bad thing to insure that you're ranging the correct target and not over the top, but that mechanical offset doesn't change with distance like the mil does. 10:40

Looks like a real game changer for long range rifle shooting. You have the most incredibly beautiful “range” and scenery to exercise the 2nd amendment. Keep that content coming!
I can't get over that view
I think you may have misunderstood how the divergence of the laser from your line of sight works. If your line of sight and the laser are both a straight line and they are 3 inches apart on the gun and 3 inches apart at 100 yards then they are also 3" apart at every other distance. So at 500 yards you'd only need to aim about .2 mills under your intended ranging target to have your laser centered on the target. At 1,000 yards it would be within .1 mils of your center cross hair etc... This is why Vortex recommends to zero it this way. The farther away you range the closer the laser is to your center cross hair.
This is a simple case of mixing up a fixed offset with a fixed angular subtension.
In the video you were likely picking up the ground at the bottom of the 1,000 yard target and most other targets with the laser so it still gives an accurate range and holdover.
Anyways, great shooting.
just so everyone is aware, the zero point of the rangefinder is set Independently from the reticule of the scope. As stated in the video, they are not meant to converge (also meaning they are not meant to diverge). Utilizing it in the method portrayed in the video will result in inaccurate readings. This is worth adding a disclaimer in the video as the consequences could be rather drastic.
For example, in the video he states that a proper zero from the reticule is .8 Mils at 100 yards, Which would equate to roughly 2.88 inches *(at 100 yards). Assuming the Height Over Bore (Rather the line of sight through the center of the scope -A.K.A crosshairs) is 2.88 Inches below the Line of sight of the IR/visible Laser that fires to take the range reading this is the proper setup and will always accurately return a reading of 100 Yards when he uses the .8 Mil mark in the scope. BUT ONLY AT 100 YARDS.
At distance continuing to use the .8 mil mark in the scope will return an incorrect reading as you would ultimately be ranging in front of the target you are trying to hit. Basically Mil and MOA are both angular measurements and you can think of them as "expanding" at distance. We've established that .8 mils At 100 yards is 2.88 inches, but at 200 yards .8mils is 5.76 inches, At 500 yards .8mils is 14.4 inches, and at 1000 yards .8 mills is 28.8 inches, ETC...
As the line of sight of the scope is independent of the Vis/IR laser for the rangefinder (meaning they do not converge or diverge, rather they remain in parallel), the original distance measurement would still apply, not the angular measurement taken via the reticule. The Rangefinder will always return a reading from 2.88 Inches above the centerline (crosshairs) of your scope. The correct way to range these targets at distance would be to put them in the crosshairs (as long as your scope is still zeroed at the original 100 yard mark) and take a range, rather then continue to use the .8 Mil mark as he does in the video.
This worked well for him in the video, and will probably work well in most target applications as they typically have some sort of immediate backdrop to catch rouge bullets. But where this can be dicey is for anyone utilizing this tool in a hunting application, as often times deer do not have an immediate backdrop and have a significant amount of "negative space" between the portion you are trying to hit and the ground. in theory, you could ultimately range under the deer's body, and actually return a range 100 yards (or more/less) behind it from a hill, tree, or other animal resulting in a missed shot or worse, a wounded deer.
All this to say, great video showcasing this piece of exciting new tech to an industry that has been rather underserved by our modern capability's in electronics and computing. Glad to see you showing it to your audience and I will be subscribing to see more videos from you in the future!

Can you put this in a really simple terms? or are you a lawyer.
@@deadmenwalkingsavtheusa7594 if you copy the methodology in the video for set-up, just use your crosshairs to range the target PRIOR to adjusting the turrets.
If you need to range again, return the scope to the original zero setting put your crosshairs on the target and take a range, then readjust the turrets to the output of the RF.
The rangefinder will always return a distance measurement 2.88 inches above the center dot of your crosshair (given its set to the original hundred yard zero) regardless of how far away what your ranging is. (A laser does not follow a parabolic flight path, rather is a straight line from A-B) if your scope already has adjustment dialed in to the turret your ranging significantly higher/lower from your point of aim.

@@deadmenwalkingsavtheusa7594 in other words, just make sure the line of sight through the scope and the visible laser are as parallel as possible. You don't want them to converge or diverge, because the vortex laser will depart from the scope reticle and measure some other distance (than what is in the scope crosshairs).

I agree. As an owner of an unlocked RAPTAR, the Impact 4000 brings something to the market that most people were not aware of (or could not afford). I have since moved to the Impact 4000 as it offers me more in a better, lifetime-warranty package.

I will be using this for long-range precision shooting for a big bore airgun known as the Airforce Texan LSS .50 with custom-made bullets looking to break the next big airgun shot in long range. If the light on the remote is blinking orange, which is easy to mistake as red in sunlight, you need to press and hold up/down on the remote to make it discoverable by other devices. It will blink red when it is discoverable. The remote can be added by the Impact directly if you don't want to use the app

I dig it. Definitely on my wishlist. I just have a hard time justifying this over a set of good range finding binos that aren’t slaved to a specific rifle.
Been playing with one for the last couple weeks. Had it out to 1300 so far. Used my kestrel data to build profiles. Onboard ballistics were spot on out to about 1100. Started to see some variances between AB and Geo past 1100. My intended purpose is team match and honestly will likely only use ranging with armboard and not ballistics. My 52 year old eyes have a little issue with the display in the ballistics mode. HCD display much better for me. They could probably offer some font options in firmware. Yes it’s big but sub $2k versus the alternatives will be a winner.

For adjusting Windage, I believe the device can accept data inputs from a Kestrel via Bluetooth.
This is true but you need the app to transfer data from kestrel. Flow is like this Kestrel->App->Impact. Once data is on the Impact it will be retained and you can close the app until the next time you want to update it. I usually just read wind from the kestrel and manually input that wind on the Impact

Awesome review! Think it’s already been said but the reason for zeroing the laser .8 mils above the reticle at 100yds is so it maintains a consistent zero 3 inches above POA and that distance stays the same at all distances, only being .8mils at 100yds

I got their fury binoculars with applied ballistics so i can use it with multiple rifles without buying new mounts or setting it up every time i use a different rifle. If you have one dedicated lr rifle though being able to range right off your rifle is the way to go.

You know that’s a great point and something I didn’t even think about. Yes it’s very possible inconsistent torque is what lead to the poi shift. Might have to grab a torque wrench and try the poi shift test again sometime.
I live in a place where the tree line goes to the top of mountains. If I can find a place where i can see 1000yards straight, I cant see the splash. Very jealous of your landscape!

@MountainsMulletsMerica I would be interested to hear your take on this also. Generally, I like to use without the app because it is a standalone device. The app does have some added functionality and is easier to read and navigate compared to the device. Some notable functions specific to the app are: Using multi B.C bullets from the library, MV temp tables, sharing profiles and range cards via text/email, storing more than 10 profiles, pulling weather from airports or 3rd party devices, using Impact to drop pins on a map, exclude/include things like spin drift, aero jump and Coriolis in the ballistic calculation (app must be selected as the ballistic source for when connected to the Impact).

I personally believe it is worth the $2k price tag if you can shoot long-range. I unfortunately don't have anywhere easily accessible to shoot long range. It looks like a lot of fun, and I would like to be able to try it sometime

We've had an MRAD in our shop and wasn't too impressed. Now here I am looking them up again debating it 😂
2K is very good price for that.
I am using kestrel paired with sig RF and it is sick for spotter-shooter work.
But handheld finders are quite hard to use and have a lot of learning curve.
Being able to range precisely and have a stable position helps the rangefinder also.
The wind in northern europe is rarely coming from a certain angle, the terrain and wind conditions usually create difficulties getting a good estimate for first round hits, compared to rare winter and summer days when the wind actually is predictable /steady.
How did you like the ergonomics of using that thing that high up the rifle? Did you try it in gear? Because it seems like a bit cumbersome to operate with stuff on. Even kestrel is not easy to use in winter time with its screen lagging from the cold.
A non bias comparison between their system and Sig's BDX would be interesting. I find that Vortex's system makes it big and clunky in the field. More likely to bump it on something.
Relative to other options (if they're even there), the Impact 4000 is indeed bangin' for the $1,999 price tag for what it does.
Also, thanks for the quality education and content. It's really helping me warm-up on my journey to longrange shooting for when I get there.

Just ordered mine today with Spuhr mounts for three rifles.
The Vortex Impact 4000 is one more step toward a rifle scope that includes ranging, BDC, windage allowance, and automatic reticle adjustment to target. It may even eventually include an optional AI target identification and automatic trigger actuation when all parameters align. Just send out your Tesla Optimus robot to bring in the venison, cleaned, wrapped, and cooked to perfection.

2- that thing's impressive. Those first shot impacts are very nice.
3- probably not too far away from an AI scope that 'moves' the reticle for you. This is halfway there it seems.
